SNK is releasing a modern NeoGeo AES console

As someone who never played the Neo Geo: Which of the 10 games would you say are timeless classics that still hold up today? Which ones to avoid? Or are they all bangers? I love the idea of a 1:1 rerelease of a console so much I'm contemplating buying even if I'm not a huge Neo Geo fan.

Well, the Metal Slug series is still considered the peak of 2D sprite art and animation so they hold up visually. Although Metal Slug 1 is great, X and 3 are my favorites (X is a more refined version of 2). And also, maybe a real console isn't the best way to play those games, they all suffer from slowdowns so the best way to play them is on emulators/FPGA that allow overclocking of the Neo-Geo CPU.

Doesn't this new AES+ have a switch for overclocked mode?

Isn't it supposed to be the same hardware as the original, with the original chips and all? If so i don't think it's possible, unless you physically overclock the actual physical CPU.

But i have no idea really.
The website says:

Quality-of-life features

Low-latency HDMI output

Original AV output for CRT enthusiasts

DIP switches for language selection, overclocking and display mode selection

Real talk, it's not for you. You would be better off buying Capcom Arcade Stadium 1+2 if you want to experience that style of gaming. The price is not an indicator of how good the Neo Geo is now and it's one for the collectors that know what they are getting.

This is pretty gatekeepy. This isn't a collectors product. They're literally rerunning carts at super reasonable prices. It's 100% designed to let new people enjoy these games just like this.

Has it been mentioned if it comes with any CRT filters? Im just not so sure about the look of these games on a 65" 4K TV.

They will look fine as long as this console supports linedoubling or some other form of upscaling. I use a Mister myself and the games look better than using actual hardware + the stream to get it working.

You're being a gatekeeper "I used ow own lots of AES games". These games are availible in multiple collections and al la carte games through Arcade Archives without the massive price tag. A super expensive mini console is the exact opposite of entry level to let new people enjoy Neo Geo games.

I also had a shelf full of Neo Geo carts, it got to the point that they were worth far more than I actually played them and the alternatives were good enough.

I'm gatekeeping by thinking this is priced well enough for people to just give it a try? You literally told someone "this isnt for you".

Some like Metal Slug, Garou & Neo Turf Masters play well and are "required reading" to call yourself a gamer IMO. One of culture anyway. Try them with an emulator or buy them on your console of choice if you want to be a good little consumer. They are on Playstation & Switch.

Magician Lord on the other hand aged poorly, horribly even. But you have to imagine yourself playing it back in the early 90s. There was nothing like it anywhere, the sound, the art and parallax scrolling was out of this world at a time when people still had a NES or Master System at home. People that grew up with PS1/PS2 etc can't comprehend how mind-blowing sampled speech was back then.

That was the arcade experience in a nut shell. At home you might have had a 2600 or ColecoVision. But look at those versions versus the originals. It wasn't until 1986 with the US release of the NES when arcade perfect versions of early 80s arcade titles were possible.

Then think about being in 1983 with Space Invader, PacMan, Frogger. And in rolls that new game Dragon's Lair. Absolutely mind blowing.

This system was amazing circa 1990-1995, the Rolls Royce of consoles although the game selection was way worse that Megadrive or Super Nes.

I am tempted, but it's a lot of money to play basically 16 bit games from a single developer, SNK.

I woke up this morning, logged into Amazon, and cancelled my order.

As a teenager I would have been thrilled to have this. But I already have KOF2002 UM, SvC Chaos, etc... on Steam. They look and play great there, it's very convenient, etc... I bet I would have played the NeoGeo for an hour and then moved on probably. Rather than going down the path of starting to collect physical games again I think I'm good now with modern versions. It's still a very cool product that I never thought we would see though.

How are you enjoying it when you stuck it inside a shelf :D
Yes, it's on a display shelf with the rest. I also have a CRT TV with the cables next to all the consoles in the display cabinet, so I just need to plug in the console. Ideally, they'd all be connected and wouldn't need to be moved, but I'm short on space 😅

Neo Geo is part of my retro console collection. Most of these consoles are ones I bought as a kid and have kept. Others I've acquired as an adult, as I could afford these. I bought that Neo-Geo + 4 original games for €500 four years ago. A great deal considering current prices.

It's a humble and simple little corner compared to many people's collections, but I enjoy it and I'm happy to have it. Few things compare to the feeling of playing childhood consoles that are 30+ years old and still working like new...😊

I'll be adding my Xbox 360 and PS3 soon because they've entered the retro era, but I'm still doing calculations and brainstorming ideas for how to fit it all into such a small space. 😅

It was an awesome time. That's why my upstairs playroom has 15 Arcade1Ups in it.

And that's why I'm considering this—don't need it though.

What do you mean by "see what scalpers do"?
I hope anyone who tries to scalp this or anything else in life absolutely loses their money big time

He recommends you to scalp it so the scalpers don't do it. These guys are the worst

King of Fighters 2003
King of Fighters 2002
King of Fighters 2001
King of Fighters 2000
King of Fighters 99
King of Fighters 98
King of Fighters 97
King of Fighters 96
King of Fighters 95
King of Fighters 94

Neo Geo easily has the best ratio of good/bad games of any system ever made.

I agree, but the production cost is still what it is, I think it's kinda reasonably priced.

I had a mostly complete AES collection that I sold off, so I certainly know the nostalgia factor :)
I would guess that the cost of fabrication only is around 30 dollars for the cartridge, the box (which is not a simple PS5/Switch) and instruction manual.
But that's just a guess. Then you factor in development cost (reingeenering those is not free) which should be at least 5 to 10 dollars. Then the licence and of course the game that cost nothing because already developed years ago.

To be honest, yeah there is still a bit of a margin there I guess.
But reproducing the console itself is not a easy task. So I guess they are (big maybe) selling the console at a loss, and recovering their loss with games.

That's why I took the plunge and preordered the Ultimate Edition, that makes the games cost 40 dollars per unit.

If I was going to get one of these then at launch I would get KOF 2002, Metal Slug, and Samurai Shodown V Special.
As far as what future games I would want:

Snk vs Capcom SvC Chaos
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug 3
The Last Blade 2
Samurai Shodown 4
Samurai Shodown V Perfect
Samurai Shodown 1
KOF 2003
KOF 2001
KOF 1999
Windjammers

So you are the reasons people make these "vertical display" cradles for consoles lol

Honestly this would be tempting if this was cheap.
I could very happily sit down and play some Mutation Nation, King of the Monsters, and Metal Slug!.

I was going to put in a pre-order but Amazon Japan won't let you cancel after purchasing and are taking payment straight after ordering which is quite unusual. So I'm passing for now

I also have some concerns about the build quality of the machine and the stick.
