SNK is teasing a new Metal Slug

Imagine if we get a new 3D sidescrolling Metal Slug running on Unreal Engine like KOF15 on modern platforms in 4K. Either way I'm super interested. I hope it has the Mars People.

It is intriguing - and probably cheaper - but that whimsical and meticulously animated 2d sprites are the one of the core of its visual charm, IMHO...

My wish is to have high resolution re-drawn (not upscaled) 2d sprites, frame by frame with a lot more details and definition to used as future assets, but it would be very expensive to do so unless you utilize AI to fill in the gaps...

It would be amazing if they could use the KOF12 / KOF13 2D engine & style

Metal Slug sadly is a product of it's time. There is no way in hell SNK would make something that looks anything close to what the series used to look.

Correct, it would be much cheaper.
(But it's Metal Slug, they re-use sprites and assets all the time).

If they got time and money, do it in a slightly higher resolution like Crosscode did at 568x320, the extra vertical lines allows for more detail. But that's weird resolution and it will cause problems. In Souldiers they use 640×360, it looks great, crunchy, but every step up in resolution makes it more expensive, double the res and you quadruple the work.

Could mean rebooting or remaking an old existing game.
I wish they rework Metal Slug 6 into something better.

Maybe the interim segments are a clue for what it will look like, some sort of CGI recreation of the concept arts, maybe assisted by AI.

I'd prefer them to just draw it at the same resolution is fine, add filter options for modern displays.

Second best thing to happen after SEGA announcing a revival of their classic franchises.
They haven't released anything yet. Not believing anything they announce until something gets released.

Shinobi doesn't count, SEGA doesn't get the merit here. This is a Panzer Dragoon / HOTD case where they simply invested a very small budget and lent a license. It would have existed and been great anyway because it was made by Lizardcube and they are highly passionate and a driving force behind these smaller games.

Got to be a new game for the new NeoGeo console right? RIGHT?

I think (and if they're smart it'll likely be done this way) it'll be a multiplat release, maybe as some timed exclusive for the AES+ (or maybe not), but the thing being those who want an authentic Neo Geo cart version of the game will buy that one and can play it on the AES or AES+.

If you just want the game on something you already have and don't mind digital-only, they'll probably have it on Steam, PS5, Switch 2, Series S/X is my guess. Other games have taken a similar approach and done pretty well from what I've noticed.

Yes, I can't imagine ANYTHING WORSE!

The reality, somewhat unfortunately, is that making new 2D sprite games at the level companies SNK or Capcom did in the mid-90s is probably really expensive. Too expensive to justify vs. likely sales.

If they can fine-tune the graphical effects to make a 3D Metal Slug practically look like the classic 2D games, then that's the next best thing. Plus it'd allow more flexibility in character outfit options, more varied stage routes, item options etc.

Too early on a Sunday morning for this 🥵

No idea how the turn based one sold.

If they have a decent team behind it maybe they can create something worthwhile.

It would be interesting to see the original creators come back to do a Pocky & Rocky: Reshrined or Shadow of the Ninja - Reborn style retake on their original concept.

Still waiting for Black Finger Jet to be released, probably the closest thing to Metal Slug we were going to get, until this tease.

I am not sure if black finger jet is going to happen, no more footage and the dev made another game instead.
