Digital Foundry: Are Gaming and Consoles becoming... Boring?

IMO we lost about a decade of game advancement thanks to GG/politics and COVID. But Crimson Desert and Pragmata give me hope that some people out there are eager to try different stuff and stop making the same sort of games or worse just endlessly remaking stuff that better people made decades ago.

Consoles should be boring. Nobody should be thinking about consoles. In fact, nobody should even have to think about what console they choose.

It's the games the ones supposed to be interesting.

This just strikes me as nerds in midlife crisis. How fun can your job be when you're counting stair-stepping polygons to catch that 1440p resolution?

They only say that because the Xbox failed, it's like saying consoles will disappear when only one console will disappear.

It absolutely did handicap Saturn because it was mandatory to run games like X-Men vs Street Fighter when PS1 could run it without any of the bullshit. Even calling it slightly better than PS1 is an overstatement because there are list of 2D games that just didn't work without the expansion pack. And no, having to use 4 meg cart does NOT mean its superiority. Having 32X doesn't make genesis superior to SNES, it just made it more BS. No wonder why Saturn failed miserably as it did.

XMVSF for Saturn was designed around the ram cart. The PS version was simply nerfed to run on its hardware. This was common across all situations between the two systems. And no 4 meg cart meant missing out on certain games, again, like AD&D. And the 32X is a stupid comparison.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 didn't have a ram requirement on the Saturn, and it ran circles around the PS1 version. It actually had a survival mode!

Here're the list of 2D games that were released on PS1 that are NOT working on Saturn without that bullshit ram pack.

X-Men vs Street Fighter
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter
Dark Stalker 3
Metal Slug
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
KOF96
KOF97
Samurai Shodown 3
Samurai Shodown 4
Street Fighter Alpha 3

So, your supposedly best 2D console didn't have any of these games in the US when they were readily available for PS1, because they didn't sell these ram expansions outside Japan.

Best 2D console my ass :messenger_tears_of_joy:

i think digital foundry is paltry to blame for the boring and excessive gaming issues today.they focus on upscalers instead of pushing technology and ggameplay and graphcis, its always framerate over eveything ven if it dampens the gampelauy

You are thick-headed aren't you? Capcom/SNK/etc. could have ported those games without cart usage and they still would have beaten the PS1 versions, assuming proper programming. The Saturn already had more RAM and specialized 2d functions. The PS1 versions took a hit.

And games like Radiant Silvergun and AD&D (to say nothing of 1st party games like Dragon Force 1/2)? Couldn't happen on the PS1, period. I wouldn't have minded an expansion pack.
