SNK is releasing a modern NeoGeo AES console

The original Neo market will remain as expensive and elite as usuasl. AES+ will be a lower tier child and treated as such by the elite. There will always be OG products. AES+ will just epxand the market and offer more available cheaper second prints, anyone who collects cards or comics would be famliar with this. I could actually see prices for the OG market systems and cartridges spike upwards, at least the games. I woud love some of the new comapanies to jump on board and get some reprints of Xeno Crisis, Kraut Buster and some of the Ngdev team stuff.

Furrtek (worked on the AES+) gave a thumbs up to this post by Nic034:

"Possibly using NAND for cartridge is heresy. NAND is not technically or directly compatible with the 68000's address bus and its mandatory direct read access. It would be a cheaper technical choice, but one that would greatly complicate things, requiring more components etc. NOR is connected directly to an address/data bus like any standard SRAM. NAND uses a multiplexed I/O interface that is incompatible with this type of access. NOR allows execute-in-place (XIP). the CPU executes code directly from the cartridge without any prior copy to RAM. The 68000 performs direct random access on the bus. NAND does not natively support this. It would require adding a NAND controller between the chip and the bus, a buffer RAM to load code before execution, and additional address mapping logic. This essentially means recreating a PC-style loading system… absurd for a game cartridge."

Seems like we're getting NOR flash memory and we're in good hands.

I'll pre-order a black one with Metal Slug on Amazon. That might be the start and end for me probably.

Worst case I can display it as the machine I could never afford but always wanted. NEO GEO the arcade machine was so distinct from all other machines. Every pizza place had one where I grew up. Crossing fingers this is exactly what most of us really want!

I'd prefer mask roms, but I'll take nor , no program/erase cycles means it should last plenty long enough

As someone who never played the Neo Geo: Which of the 10 games would you say are timeless classics that still hold up today? Which ones to avoid? Or are they all bangers? I love the idea of a 1:1 rerelease of a console so much I'm contemplating buying even if I'm not a huge Neo Geo fan.
All-time classics: Garou Mark of the Wolves, Pulstar, Metal Slug, Neo Turf Master (Big Tournament Golf).
Good games: Twinkle Sprite Spirit, Shock Troopers, Magician Lord.
Good games but other in the same series are generally considered better: Samaruai Shdown 5 (SS2), King of Fighters 2002 (KoF98).
Just alright surely not worth 80 euro: OverTop.

But then again, while cheap for AES standard, 80 euro is still quite pricy therefore I would suggest to check the game and attest what you envision will engross you enough.
For example I think I will go only for Garou, Pulstar and Metal Slug.

Neo Turf masters HAS to be one of the best, most classic games ever created - and I say this as person that knows fuck and all about golf, it's just that the game is a bona fide classic oozing charm from every pore and as for the gameplay...it's pure crack, it's literally "just one more hole" until you've played 2 courses back to back...

Amazingly fun game, one of the GOATs IMO, it's just THAT fun (and relaxing) to play

PS: that "OhhHhh NOOooooOHhhh" after a bogey gets me everytime 😁

I had it for the Neo Geo Pocket, portable Neo Turf Masters was played so much.

Can someone please tell me what the button combination is supposed to be on the CD controller? Like I'm seeing people complain it's wrong or something?

They would need to be licensed from whoever owns Taito now and Konami. Those are long shot choices.
Never say never. Plaion worked with Namco and Toaplan to get these games released for the Atari 7800/7800+ platform.

Just ordered the cables that I'll need to connect it to a CRT. I figure once we start getting close to launch then they may become hard to find in stock.

Good idea. I know the AES+ has HDMI and AV outputs. Will the AES+ have the same AV output as the OG AES? I see there are NeoGeo AES composite cables on eBay. I would love to play the AES+ on my CRT.

Yep besides the HDMI port it also has the original neogeo AV port so original cables will work on the AES+ as well

My cables came in the mail today for connecting the AES+ to a CRT with component video and stereo sound. Now I'm all set for November! I also can't wait to see what gets announced for the second wave of games in September. I don't plan to buy any original AES games before launch because you never know if it could end up in wave 2 for a cheaper price.

Considering only samurai spirits 1 and 2, garou 1 2 and special regularly sell for under 90 (and I used the Japanese titles for a reason, the us /eu carts are all more) and maybe ryoko no ken and kof 94 jp
everything else would be cheaper
Plus overclocking does wonders for metal slug 2

Shock troopers only "good"??

Don't you own a ps5 pro?
I bought a digital ps5 when they launched. When a pro first came out GameStop let you trade the OG in for getting a pro for like $180 or something.

$1000 is a lot to me, for this, without knowing SNKs full plan for it either.

If you're a collector trying to save a ton getting original NeoGeo stuff then you're golden to go this route.

If you're not a hardcore collector or NeoGeo guy, it's a harder pillow to swallow than specially with emulation options being available. I would've thought something like this would be $500-$600.

Considering the console is only $250 and the games are $90 each, the AES+ and the new releases are a steal compared to the current situation...

Wait I was told in some YT video this console is going to be $1000. $250 id be down.

I was thinking of also getting a fighting game. Which of the 3 is the best? I've played Mark of the Wolves and it's obviously awesome. Is Samurai Showdown V a good game? What about KOF? I can't decide!

The answer is always Garou.

Kof 2k2 and samsho v special are both absolutely solid games, though ground is the best of the 3

2k2 is an absolute all timer. Not so much in presentation but the core gameplay is unmatched. SSV is super well liked by the community but i find it too focused on overbearing system mechanics myself. Garou is probably the best overall package though.

Remember it's ssv special, not the original release,

Garou. Because Rock Howard's stage/theme samples a eurodance song from the 90's.

OK so I'm not trying to start any shit here, but I checked out the display model AES+ in person yesterday.

Its not easy to get a look at the ports on the back, but I reached over and snapped a couple of shots. Now I know this is likely just an early mock-up shell, but the AV Out port ain't right.

It's an 8-pin DIN, but it's the Mega Drive type, not the AES type. In other words, the pin spacing is U-shaped, not C-shaped. If you tried to plug an OG AES RGB cable into this, you'd probably snap the top two pins.

I'm hoping the final version restores the original port type.
