Zach Cregger's RESIDENT EVIL – Official Teaser Trailer

Martin Scorsese Cinema GIF

He is just rolling with it. nothing tied to the actual games.

Weapons was a joke. Great comedy.

Looks like an unrelated horror movie. Might be good, who knows. But it doesn't appear to have anything in common with RE.

I'd rather not see any videogames turned into movies or tv. Interactivity is what makes them good, the stories are almost always no more than average. But for some reason here we are in 2026 still looking for validation from industries that look down on our hobby without understanding that it dwarfs their dying artform.

Director breaks down trailer. Talking points listed:

Zach Cregger himself breaks down the trailer:

  • Movie takes place alongside the events of RE 2
  • Mostly takes place over the course of one night
  • This is another guy on his own objective outside of Raccoon city during those events
  • He is trying to get inside of the city while the T-virus has already broken out
  • The nuke at the end of RE2 does not take place in this movie, it is before that
  • He wanted the movie to emulate the game's feeling of facing bigger threats
  • This also means having the protagonist be aware of resource management and health
  • Points out that protagonist starts with pistol
  • Eventually finds shotgun, then MP5
  • A lot of the movie has a steady cam following the protagonist to emulate a third person game's visual language
  • There is also some first person scenes
  • He wanted there to be tension and slowness like in Resident Evil
  • Does not have a 'nemesis' character in the movie due to the above
  • He wanted to make a Resident Evil movie where you're following an average joe with little to no combat experience who is learning his guns and adapting to his environment
  • The box the protagonist is carrying is important
  • Doesn't reveal yet what the big naked obese guy does yet
  • Wants the smaller threats to be actual threats
  • Movie focuses a bit more on the T-virus creatures than the regular zombies
  • Has a unique creature that is hinted at
  • There is an herb in the trailer and other things that people might notice on second viewing
  • He likes RE4 the most, and also liked RE8, loves the older games (especially RE2) for their tension and puzzle solving, but he loves the replayability of 4 the most

Creggy hasn't made a bad movie yet, since we don't speak of Miss March.

I'd watch this even if it had nothing to do with Resident Evil, which it sounds like it doesn't, so all good.

I actually like it - but how it will distinguish with other Zombie movies, or tie into the franchise' universe - will see.

On the one hand, Zach Cregger is a fan of the games and his concept of a random dude trying to survive the T-virus outbreak isn't a terrible one. That's the premise of Resident Evil Outbreak after all

On the other hand, it looks like a generic zombie movie once you remove the main characters of RE and everything else. The fact the generic zombie movie occurs in Raccoon City (presumably) and has RE branding doesn't change this at all

I'm on the fence with this one. Definitely a wait and see

What did the other movies have in relationship with the game?
The Anderson films contained almost all of the main characters but the issue is that most of them are written completely different/wrong.

(To be fair to Jill, the remake version ended up being more brash and confident like this movie one)

Or they copy a scene/enemy fight directly from the games but didn't understand what made them fun/cool:

The added cheese is fun though, which makes it more of a series to turn off the brain, have fun with the action, and laugh at, rather than a revered set of films.

Also if you're wondering why Leon's scenes are so bad, it's because that movie was also before it was widely known that people saw Leon as the more popular poster boy over Chris, so he was instead relegated to a background character.

Very much this. Take away the gameplay and games are essentially B movies at best.

First good RE movie on the way.

After Weapons, I'd watch absolutely anything he puts out, and I have a feeling this is gonna be excellent. Can't wait.

As an obsessive Resident Evil fan there's nothing in that trailer which makes me want to see it

Which is why it looks fucking amazing, Resident Evil works as a video game franchise and bar the first movie which I have a soft spot for the rest have been various degrees of utterly abysmal, I think Creggers will knock this out of the park

I've read the leaked script and the movie seems fun. Breakneck pacing.

But to be honest, its RE in name only. Too little zombies and way too many new creatures.
