Ask me about my package
As the Build It Boyz' collective eyes roll back into their skulls, let us discuss the latest eGPU options avavilable in mid 2026.
Let's Look at the available connectors:
1. Thunderbolt 3/4 | USB 4.0:
+ Hot plug/swappable with power on
+ Very little complications setting up
+ Ubiquitous option for eGPUs
- High controller and CPU overhead limits performance significantly
= 40Gbps theoretical, 32Gbps max in practice
2. Thunderbolt 5 | USB v2:
+ Hot plug / swappable
+ Simpler to set up
- currently not many laptops, mini PCs, PC handhelds have TB5/USB4v2
- Still not as fast as direct PCIe connectors like Oculink due to controller and CPU overhead
- Expensive Docks vs TB3/4 | USB4
= 80Gbps bi-directional, 120Gbps/40Gbps asymmetrical
3. Oculink:
+ Direct connection to mobo via PCie 4.0 x 4, meaning no controller nor CPU overhead.
+ Second most available connection for eGOUs
+ PCIe adapter is cheap (<$50)
+ very cheap BYOCard Dock options
- Requires shutdown before connecting, and must turn on dock before host PC
- Rarer connector compared to TB3/USB4
= 64Gbps (8GB/s)
4. MCIO 8i (Mini Cool Edge Connector)
+ Copperlink successor to Oculink with direct PCIe connection
+ No controller/CPU overhead
+ Insignificamt difference to native PCIe connection (5.0 x8 allows 32GB/s, equal to 4.0 x16)
- Must shut off PC to connect, must turn on Dock first
- PCIe adapter is minimum $100
- cable length limited to 19" for ideal performance
- Only available Dock option currently is BYOCard and is almost $500
