Seven Psychopaths was so god damn good. Every bit as good as In Bruges with terrific performances. I highly recommend it, as I think it was one of very very few movies worth seeing in 2012.

  • Let's Make Love

I really liked the imagery of Beasts of the Southern Wild. Very evocative and affecting film with a marvelous score.

The Fighter. Wow. Great movie with incredible performances by Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, and Amy Adams. The plot was a little predictable, especially towards the end, but in this case that's not a bad thing. I'm not really one for boxing films, but I thought the fight scenes in this were intense and very well choreographed.

A Cat in Paris was a nice little film - a little over an hour in length - with great visual style and a jazzy score, about a cat, a cat burglar, and a little girl who get caught up the police investigation of a crime lord.

The Grey - It's like Flight of the Phoenix set in the Alaskan tundra with killer wolves. Cool. It's an intensely grim film with some grisly death scenes and chilling atmosphere.

Let's Make Love stars the lovely Marilyn Monroe as a stage actress who falls in love with a billionaire who is pretending to be a down on his luck actor in order to get close to her. It's a nice film, but not Monroe's best by any stretch.

  • 9 (2009, dir. Shane Acker) - ★★★
  • Four Rooms (1995, dir. Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, +2) - ★★½
  • Paul (2011, dir. Greg Mottola) - ★★★ - Fun. To be honest I liked the setup but I'm getting tired of seeing Mrs. Weaver showing up at the end of movies. Best scene in the movie is the mountain-reveal--truly inspired.
  • Bottle Rocket (1996, dir. Wes Anderson) - ★★ - The story isn't that involving and most of the time I just think it's a mess. But, I think it's interesting to see the style from Wes Anderson emerge.
  • The Butterfly Effect (2004, dir. Eric Bress, J. Mackye Gruber) - ★★★ - Despite being poorly directed, not taken far enough and feeling like a wasted oppertunity at best it was still very entertaining in a saturday-hung-over-kind of way.
  • Revolver (2005, dir. Guy Richie) - ★★ - I think I get what Richie is trying to say. I just don't buy it wholeheartedly. It's a trick pretending to be smarter than it is. Waste of time but decent filmmaking.
  • Impostor (2001, dir. Gary Fleder - ★★ - I'm a sucker for movie adaptions of my favorite author Philip K. Dick but neither the short-story this is an adaption of or this movie is really interesting. Could have been made thought-provoking but wasn't.
  • Pinapple Express (2008, dir. David Gordon Green) - ★★★ - I was kind of spaced out due to lack of sleep when watching this. Perfect mood really. Half-aware of what was happening--felt like role-playing. Seriously though, I don't get American drug-culture but this movie is entertaining. Franco is amazing in this.

had a good time with les mis. songs were good and thought the casting was near impeccable; jackman was wonderful and full of heart as jean valjean, crowe wasn't the best singer but brought lots of presence to jalvert, eddie redmayne is spot on in a hopeless romantic role and hathaway was just amazing and it's a shame her character isn't in it for long. i've read criticsm of hooper's direction for being over the top but i thought the shakey camera and closeups worked well and created an intimate feel and was quite hypnotic, i'm not sure if i'd have liked it as much if it'd been more straightforwardly directed, it felt more cinematic this way and less staged. main issue that the plot is a bit too sprawling and it doesn't have time to breath in two and a half hours.

mean streets is an early scorsese film about the struggling relationship between two friends going in different directions in the new york mob scene. i thought it was interesting. i mean it's kinda rough round the edges, you can see scorsese's style all over it but it's not as honed as in later films, there's some shit dubbing and it's not really a clear story, it's more about mood and character relations than anything. still the core relationship between keitel and de niro's characters is really good, the way charlie struggles with his love for johnny boy and his irritation at his constant fuckups feels very real, and i like how they show them both coming from this certain culture of young mobsters drinking, fighting etc - the film has more fights than a bond film - and the really dirty 70s new york setting. it's kinda weird how ne niro vanishes in the middle of the film though i didn't like that, ending wasn't that well done either.

still haven't worked out what book to read next :/ need to get cracking.

Huh, I didn't even know that existed. I just caught it on TV so I didn't have that option. Still a great movie though.

Ya on the bluray. It was originally suppose to release in theaters in black/white, but the studio decided it wouldn't be able to sell the movie that way. It is MUCH more enjoyable in Black/White imo.
