American and British women write it in droves. Often popular fics get translated into other languages. But no, they have to be sensational, and the prison part just isn't risque enough. Have to paint these women as a bit creepy, instead of persecuted!

Women in general tend to be stimulated by different things than men. Written porn came about because none of the visual porn available catered to our needs. We'd need movie length porn with build up and then pay off at the end to really get the same sort of stimulation. We tend to want to be emotionally invested in the two people fucking. It's not JUST about the fucking. (most of the time)

Oh of course. The writers tend to be heavily skewed as straight females, but I know one male writer, at least.
Know several guys who enjoy reading slash fanfic, not sure if they are straight or gay though.

Also, they're getting actually arrested for putting up gay fanfic online? WTF! They should make really aggressive gay fanfiction starring all these asshole politicians enforcing these draconian laws. And I'm not talking about rosey, lovey-dovey fanfic that glorifies them either. I mean heavy-duty, depraved shit that paints them as the cock-hungry closet-cases that they are. Same for the Russian politicians that are enforcing similar bullshit.

Like I said before, when I see Chinese or Russian slash fanfiction posted on like AO3 or FF.net, I get a little swell of pride. Cause it proves that not everyone over there are bigoted assholes.

I've had it explained to me that slash is inversely proportional to the number of interesting female characters in a series. If it's a male dominated cast, or if all of the interesting characters are male, then slash will be a big deal in that fandom, which I think makes sense.
