Top5 PS4 launch software numbers from Famitsu.

1. Knack - 322,083 (includes PS4 First Limited Pack bundles)
2. Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin - 73,086
3. Battlefield 4 - 26,878
4. Killzone Shadowfall - 25,978
5. Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends - 13,576

Pretty awful attach rates.

For physical copies, yes. How many of the PS4 games are available for download on the PS4 PSN store?

It might signal a bigger Digital attach-rate?

Digital sales! Knack!

No, it's just an awful tie ratio because of insufficient and unappealing software.

If Knack wasn't bundled it would likely still have a terrible tie ratio.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of people that will go out and buy a console regardless of the software available.

Personally, I want two or three games at launch, even if I'm not 100% interested in them. Gotta have something to play on your new toy.

Early adopter bought them as an anticipation for future, unreleased game. SCEJ better not make them dissappointed with their promises.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Knack will be #1 on Famitsu (all hail Knack), but presumably not exist on MC.

Sony is going to have to either kill the PS3 outright and force everything to PS4, but then hope they also dont make PS4+Vita cross platform stuff untenable. How slow Japan is at adapting to the new generations is pretty horrifying, especially when they've been telegraphed so far ahead of time.

sony's still selling the psp. they're not going to get rid of the ps3 for a couple of years, even if it only does a couple hundred thousand in 2015. plus, it would really hurt developers who are still bringing games to the ps3, unless sony's planning to foot the bill for ports on all of them.

True that. We all were aware of the situation for weeks before it happened (we all in Media Create threads, I mean). I don't know why people still act surprised and try to forge excuses. And we need to stop with this "Digital Sales" excuse. Even if 30-40% of sales were digital (which they are not), the number would still be horrible.

Oh I know Sony definitely wont cull off the PS3, nor can they seemingly price bomb that bitch due to the Cell situation. Its just more than any other market, Japan is fairly uninterested in cutting edge gaming consoles and completely happy with "good enough" graphics and require far more of a conscious push to herd them into next gen.

Jurys out on if this gen will be a more traditionally shorter one, but imagine it is and Japanese devs miss the boat entirely once again (hello Persona 5). They're then just winging their way into yet more irrelevance. Scary times.

We expected people to at least buy 1 game along with the PS4. The majority didn't.

But it was packed in with knack guys knack, that's all a gamer needs to justify it's purchase.

This was always a fairly predictable outcomePS4's software situation is dire in Japan will continue to be for at least a year. Whatever this system sells on it won't be games for the mean while it'll be hype.

How do you sell on hype alone if people are not interested in the games at all? Honest question.

eh, i think it was a few western publishers who took us here kicking and screaming. a lot of japanese developers had no choice but to try and keep up with the joneses or find better avenues for success (handhelds).

Normally.

People buy it to play games that they know will be released on console in the future.

In case of Japan
MGS V, FF XV, KH3 plus whatever buyer expects from other companies.

It honestly seemed to work pretty well in the west. Machines were largely bought at launch from hype and shinier CoD.
Future promises and/or hype for a new generation of console? That's mostly the reason of why early adopter picked up new console.

Oh, like that. That is true, but i dont think that many people buy a system, takes it home and put it in the closet, waiting months, and maybe even a year or so before they play it (when for example Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out). I took it more litterally, that people only buy it for hype. I think there has to be some interest in the current excisting software as well, eventhough upcoming games might be the most interesting games.

So selling smoke? I don't know if this will work. Japan's case isn't as the West. Here people would buy a console because Sony western first and second party studios had a pedigree. People salivate when they think about Naughty Dog, those SSM new IPs, or that new Media Molecule project.

In Japan there isn't anything like that. Japan Studio was a mess until 2 years ago or so. Sony doesn't have any strong IP aside Gran Turismo (and 6 isn't selling that well). And people know Japanese third parties are slowpokes when it comes to adopting new hardware. I don't think anybody is going to buy a new console again for FFXV (or KH3, seeing Versus XIII precedent) and shelve their PS3 while it's still getting new games.

Yeah, and such long term buying on potential is probably quite dampened by the fact that pretty much all consoles in the past few years got a significant price-drop with the first year or two (Wii U didn't get one, but they got those shiny bundles with great value), and before the real system sellers started coming out.

Once you have console you can usually find something to play on it while waiting for that big hitter.

Yeah, maybe it could lead to that people check out other games that they maybe didnt have that much interest in to begin with. That is true, i can see that situation.

I hope gamers are not using it for a Netflix/BluRay box again. Might be time to take that Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin over to other regions.

I think the interest is in it being the "new thing" especially after a longer than usual hardware refresh cycle.
Reading the software sales it's clear the current game lineup isn't the main concern for who is buying the system at the moment.

I don't know, I think Japan is still being afflicted by the Glacial Age.
Yup, they definitely are. They didn't want to buy DKCTF because they don't want to see more ice and snow.
