I know that and I recognize what that means. I think for general audiences it's something that is glossed over and they don't immediately know that means it's a musical. The song in the background isn't something that is obviously the characters singing so can be considered background music. Even if in the actual film it likely will be a song that is of primary focus and not just playing across a scene.
 
Wait, so it's pronounced "Mow-ah-na", not "Mona"? They should probably make that a bit more obvious in their marketing.

I know a lot of people that just absolutely ADORE Frozen and a lot of girls who love how it turns a lot of the Disney tropes on their head. It's got a small army of young girls that loved the quirky characters and pretty dresses, and a lot of older girls and young women (and men like myself) who appreciated Disney subverting some of its more outdated cliches and breaking out of a mold they relied on for multiple generations.

Moana is looking pretty similar in that regard. A very "untraditional" Princess story. I don't think we're supposed to view Maui as her "prince" for instance, so she might be the first Disney Princess who just outright has no love interest whatsoever (excluding Pixar's Merida).

Holy shit does this look awesome. I mean, I was already looking forward to it, but this is really looking like it'll be more than I was expecting.

Everything about this film should get me super-excited. I mean, the animation looks dazzling. The soundtrack sounds amazing. It's the first CGI directorial effort from the Clements-Musker tandem that brought us The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet and The Princess and the Frog.

And yet... these latest trailers leave me flat. I'm hoping that there's substance to be found here on the story/character front and the marketing team is simply choosing to pitch this film to the masses by inundating us with The Rock's Maui endlessly showboating, the lame chicken comedy scenes, the back tattoo schtick and action sequences that have little to no gravity to them because, hey, people have no attention spans and they need to get people excited. I get that. Most animated films trailer terribly. Kubo was phenomenal and had a shitty trailer. So I'm cautiously optimistic... still.

Tangled and (to a lesser extent) Frozen also had shitty trailers.
 
Visually, it looks fantastic. Strong art direction, beauriful setting and really impressive tech.

Everything else, though... not so great.

That said, Zootopia looked pretty shit in trailers and I really enjoyed it. Frozen is garbage-tier, though, so that makes me a lot less confident about this turning out well.

Tangled was a passable movie and Frozen was dreck. As I said above, though, Zootopia was a solid (if not great- for Disney Animation Studios) film and those trailers were dire.
 
I hate to say it, but this seems like a Dreamworks-style trailer. Hopefully not entirely indicative of the final product, but I'm feeling a little cautious.

oh man, Kubo i forgot to watch that,
yeah this should be pretty good with all talent behind it and Disney known weird trailers, i only worry for that annoying big tatoo guy

Yup, they got burnt by Princess and the Frog, so ever since then they've carefully crafted their trailers to appeal to boys, too. That means focusing on comedy or sidekicks. My hope is that Moana is the clear lead in the movie, and the story focuses primarily on her and her family. Or the chicken. That chicken is adorable.
 
Errrrr, I don't get the comments saying this is a bad trailer. I actually think it's a genuinely good trailer. Which is rare and surprising considering it's for a Disney animation.

If you wanna really be reminded of some pretty bad trailers, just go and watch both the Tangled and Frozen trailers again.
