I keed, I keed, I'm glad to have 'er back. Cracked 200K on Geometry Wars today. Weekend goal: accomplished.

I'll be a good little GAFer and put this in the appropriate thread. I ran to my nearest Best Buy today with my 360 boxed back up as best as I could muster, got my replacement, was able to talk them into swapping HDs, and I'm up and running again. I went ahead and sprung for the $50 2-year replacement plan. I shouldn't have to pay for this piece of mind, but whatever, it's done.

One item of interest is that I notice this power supply is slightly different from the one that crapped out on me. The power outlet connection is now a two prong one on the power supply side instead of the original three. Why they removed the grounding prong, I'm not sure. Also, no more stupid notched-only-our-cable-will-work business. You can use a standard PC-type power cable, it just obviously won't use the grounding plug.

So far it's running without any issues. The system itself runs as warm as my last one and I definitely notice the power supply fan now although I wasn't really paying attention for one last time. It's not so loud as to be bothersome. The system I got is actually three months newer than my last (made in June versus April). Here's hoping this one is my last.

My launch Australian X360 broke, but cos im media Microsoft had it back to me within a week, though it was definitely an inconvenience.
 
I want to see if there is a theme here. can everyone who has had a 360 broken down send me thier console serial numbers. I think I can pinpoint the manufacturer (multiple breakdown people might have had thier new consoles from the SAME manufacturer again and again)

1. Thats a 1st generation 360 manufactured in May, that means CPU and GPU were delivered in end of April

2. DONT put ur 360 on a varnished wooden or carpet surface or any surface that absorbs heats and stores it. Marble floor is ideal.

So how easy is it to get the repair price down to 50% or free? I'm gonna call a million times tomrorow until I get it atleast 50%.. die they shall.

Tell them you'll buy a $60 2-year warranty on the new unit if they take at minimum 50% off the repair.

my 360 died tonight

dont know what happened but was trying to play nba2k7
hanged my 360 in first 2 second on the first try

second try, get to play a minute than hang
and now I get the red light of doom

my first console that died....:(
grrrr....

good thing I have the ebgames warranty

but still....GRRR!!!
 
Argh, the supervisor keeps claiming the big bad computer will only let her take a max of 25% off to make it like 102. They first wanted 140 for it.. She does not seem to like me using the terms " popular lights of death"and "coffin"

I have my Xbox360 located on its own shelf with nothing around it. It's desk material with a black quasi-plastic coat. The bottom does not heat up along with the Xbox (which I checked on several saddened occassions).

Last Thursday it started giving me fits. It would play for an hour or so and then my speakers would make a horrible screeching accompanied by the checkerboard patterns of a GPU getting porked on my screen. It got down to 5 minute intervels, so I got pissed, called Xbox support. Got a kid with a first day on the phone...I waited until he tried to enter my call-back number as my serial number (oh, is THAT why you couldn't find the unit in the computer?). Ask for supervisor. Get her. Unable to replicate error. She offers to sell me service contract. I immediately take her up on the offer knowing that I will be calling back after the weekend and not wanting to pay $140 worth of repair. I proceed to get sloppy drunk.

Until Tuesday. I turn it on again -- same thing happens within 30 seconds of boot, regardless of game. Call back Xbox. Get Bangladesh. "Blah blah blah, computers are down, call back 2 hours". Call back in 2 hours. "Call back tommorow". Call back in 15 minutes and work my way through a different side of the phone tree. Get America! Speak to the only individual who sounds like he has a clue how much it hurts to not be able to play my video games for 10-12 business working daya. He sends out the coffin while consoling me. Interestingly enough, no mention was made of broken computers and he could find my ref# immediately.

I guess that's what I get for putting 240+ hours of Chromehounds on a launch machine. I pray they send me a new one and not a refurb pos.

That's everybody who's responded in this thread. It's easy to think this is a 10-page thread because the same few people are bitching, but that's 95 dead machines (those marked with an asterisk were having problems, but not yet dead). So, are there 3000 GAFers with working 360s to bring that in line with the 3% claim? I do love my 360, but damn that's a lot of failed consoles!

Edit: On October 5, 2006, we're up to 105 dead 360s, with 7 more on death watch.

I wonder what percentage of that list is launch consoles. I know mine was a launch unit. It lasted roughly 9 months, which seems to be the average life of a 360. I still haven't decided on which warranty I should get for my second console - Gamestop or MS. With MS, I get 2 years for $60 ... Gamestop gives 1-year for $40 ... but you have to buy a new warranty for a replaced system ... if the 3rd console fails I'd have to buy yet another warranty, which would bring me to $120 in warranties in 2 years. I'm thinking of just going through MS this time, but I for goddamn sure don't want a refurb unit. I think if this second one dies, I'm just going to wait for MS to switch over the the 65nm manufacture process. I'm thinking there might be a price drop by that time as well. Someone big really needs to investigate this bullshit. Perhaps we should contact John Stossel! (LOL)

i'm just gonna play along, then once i get my replacement system and as long as its atleast working at the moment i'm going to report them to the bbb as well and complain how they went as low as like 35 for others.. i'll let them either refund cash or gimme crap in the amount of the difference.

After sputtering out during the last boss of Kameo and giving me the red ring of death, my 360 worked for a little while longer. Well, I wake up the next morning, put in a DVD and voila! No more 360! It's officially dead.

Granted I was playing it alot the night before, but it's no fault of mine that I actually wanted to use the product.

Well, add me to the list.
I bought it less than a month ago and I'm fairly certain that either EBgames or Microsoft ( I forget which one the EBgames guy told me) will replace it in that time. I didn't buy the warranty, so I'm pretty happy that it broke now instead of later on.

Winter is coming and I feel sorry for you guys. 360 supposed to be kept cool and ventilated? So you gonna keep the AC on all winter? Or does the 360 get hot enough to warm the house before it burns it down.

this is a boldfaced lie and your intentions could not be any more transparent.
 
from what I have seen the failure rate is around 20% but it effects only 5% of the people. Why? because SOMEHOW, those 5% of people get a defective 360 more than 2-3 times, very odd.

I just came home from a weekend trip, downloaded the NBA2k7 demo and then got the 3 red lights of death.

here's my conspiracy theory...

I just received (while I was gone) a second confirmation of my xbox service contract. this makes me feel like problems are escalating.

and right after the skins lost....gaaaar

I'm with you man, it's been 3 weeks since my cardboard coffin shipped out to me, I shipped it back 3 day UPS on the 7th because I didn't get my box til the 6th. I still don't have my 360 back! When it comes back it will be my third 360 since I got mine in early December. If MS doesn't get it together I'm done, I'm calling tomorrow to tear somebody a new one. I work in a business where the customer is #1 and an unhappy customer isn't a returning customer. This whole 360 fiasco has been some of the worst customer service I've ever seen.

Add me to the list as x2 since I'm going on my 3rd 360, 3% my arse.

I had the 360 from launch in the UK. After 7 months I got the 3 red lights. MS CS in the UK picks up the 360 sends away for repair then sends it back, usually within a week (in Europe the manufactures warranty is Standard one year and sometimes longer). They did this with mine but they sent a refurb unit rather than the original machine, I didn't have a problem with this. Except when I got the new machine back it lasted less than 3hours then I got the 3 red lights again. Again I have a new refurbed machine this time things have been fine but what is interesting is that all these refurbed machines were from the October, November 2005 period. This seems to suggest that loads are being sent in and they are just swaping them around as and when they are fixed not to cause any lenghty waiting periods for repair.

Here I quoted myself from a thread from yesterday but it should be here also. I like how Sony fanboys like to act like if you buy a 360 it will 100% fail. yes Ive had 2 systems die but they were launch units (many of the failed launch units still had foil over the contact pads for the gpu heat sinks. Chiness mfg FTW:lol ) and I had them in a tight entertainment center with no opening in the back fo the air to circulate(I didn't know about the need for proper ventilation and we just got a new entertainment center for our new HDTV). The third unit I got has been going stong since feb and thats through the hot humid summer with no air on(we have a pool out back,so we don't turn the air on till we go to sleep) anyway follow my advice below and you will have nothing to worry about. Do you have to buy the subscription online? I have a Sam's near me that we have a subscription to, but no Costco unfortunately. I heard on here recently that Sam's does a similar thing with warranties, but that's the only time I'd seen it mentioned.

Certainly wish I didnt get mine from Circuit City. :(

Shame -- by the time you've paid the $50 for a membership, it's hardly worth it unless you live near one. :\ It'd be nice to be able to just bring the system down to the store rather than waiting 2-3 weeks to get it working.

My third 360 just arrived today, and with a new born on date of 11/30/05. This one is cleaner but still has smudges on it. I was told on the phone by the customer service rep today that if you pay for a repair you get 90 days warranty, if you don't pay for the repair you get 30 days. He told me to call back in a few days and I'd be able to get the 2 year extended MS warranty. So finally, I'm up and running again. EDIT
