Nick Robinson (Polygon) involved in sexual harassment allegations [Suspended]

I took a lazier approach to help people see it.

What a creep.

Huh, GG have taken the interesting strategy of "Nick Robinson isn't worth defending because he works at Polygon."

Ok...that's...a reason.

Everything about this reasoning is just dumb. Plus wasn't their cover "ethics in games journalism"? If anything, that'd make them an opponent of Nick for his abuse of power.

Every time I think Gamergate couldn't get more dumb...

I was wondering about this. People earlier were saying that he'd fall in with Gamergate, but Gamergate hates Polygon and I wouldn't be surprised if he's not immediately comfortable jumping in with a crowd that's hated him so long either.

They're way past the point where they can expect anyone to believe their cover stories. The biggest kneecapping that movement reached was when it hit The Colbert Report - and it became obvious that mainstream media would never take their side.

I've seen a bit of the "Where's the proof?" reaction that's also been in this thread, with no acknowledgement that it's entirely possible for there to be tons of proof that is just not public right now. I consider the people I've seen speak about this on Twitter to be generally credible, and that's proof enough for me to believe the victims. GG obviously hates all game journos and 90% of people actually in the game industry, so they want to see something to the equivalent of: "Hello, my name is Nick Robinson and I am harassing you. Give me nude pics or I will cover your game unfavourably" before they'll outright condemn him for sexual harassment.

Would they care even if they received that proof?

Thanks for sharing this.

I don't really have much sympathy for Nick. It's not much more different than some musician arriving in town looking for some fun for the night so they give a wink to the local fangirls. It's not a good look to use your 'stardom' like that. Bad analogy aside, Nick's been part of an industry which is at least trying to establish itself as a safe environment for women. The least he could do is treat women who admire him with an iota of respect.
Would you suggest that musician be dropped by their label and ostracised from the industry? Should an athlete that does this be cut by his team?

This guy is clearly a creep but I don't know about people calling from him to be fired and never work in the industry again.

I guess a personality driven website has different considerations but if my workplace found out I'd sent some sleazy texts to people who didn't work there outside of work, HR wouldn't give the slightest shit.

GG dropped any pretense of a fig leaf as soon as they no longer had cameras on them (so basically a few months in?). It's been open misogyny, homophobia, and white nationalism for going on two years now. I mean, you don't need to hide it anymore when the POTUS is out there legitimizing your views.

Are they going with the "sjw/liberals are all secretly perverts" angle?

What I saw was mostly more of a "see, they're all hypocrites" thing.

Their problem regardless is that I highly doubt he'd pander to them, and beyond that a lot of his fans come for the combo with other Polygon staff (largely Griffin), so if they're condemning him it's not like he can bring many people to their cause.

Would they care even if they received that proof?

They'd just revert back to "all SJWs are secret creeps, and game journos are unethical just like we always said. Our community is way better."

One thing about it I've noticed during my ill-advised trips to that one subreddit is that they keep talking about how people are "blaming them" for this harassment or other things, and that seems like the most delusional thing about them. I honestly haven't seen anyone talking about them at all for a while, and even with this it's more about what their reaction is or if Nick will attempt to profit off them once he gets canned. They've always overstated their own importance, but this is probably the peak level of delusion for them. Gamergate is an old thing that people reference occasionally as something that happened 2 or 3 years ago, but no one I follow is talking about them as an actual going concern anymore.

Check post 3149 for a statement to Gaf from the person in the first set of DMs.

Ah, gotya, wasn't sure because it wasn't in the leading post, but other newer stuff was, I guess it's probably better to not publicly collect all accounts and references in 1 place, would make it too easy for people with bad intent.

Probably best to only include status updates about Nick and Polygon in the main post, and not individual accounts.

I mean to be fair anyone could secretly be a pervert/shitty person in their personal life. So that angle is pretty stupid. You are not supposed to assume stuff about people unless you really get to know them.

Edit: Or they just wear that shitty personality on their sleeves

Ok...that's...a reason.

Gamergate works in mysterious ways. Thought he would be the next "gimme Patreon money for speaking the TROOF" guys, like the gaming equivalent of TYT and Dave Rubin.

Also, it seems like even GAF hates Polygon in general (for good reasons too).

Caught up on the thread. Conclusion is Nick Robinson more than likely did the things he's accused of because he is a fuckboy, however he lacks the confidence and charisma of an actual fuckboy and can't just openly be the piece of shit that he is (i.e. Fuckboys aren't a problem since a blind person can see them coming from a mile away). He instead uses his fame and position to be a fake softboy in a effort to get women only to end up being a harassing creepy POS. So...fuck this dude and he deserves every consequence from his actions.

I'm curious about what you guys think in the broader context of influencers. If a youtuber/popular personality uses their influence to obtain sexual favors, is that okay? Can they assume that any interaction they engage in is not affected by their status?

Obviously this situation is worse because of the age difference but I just wanted to ask because it seems to me that celebrity worship can lead to those types of situations.

There's actually a well documented history of famous YouTube folks using their influence to groom and prey upon younger fans. Some are even doing time for owning CP of underage fans right now. There's an article I read years ago that I was going to link here about this subject, but I found an more recent article by BuzzFeed that mentions even more YouTubers doing this suspect shit.

Dude always seemed creepy, even way back in the REV3 days. What a fucking douchebag. I suspect he will be fired eventually. Your career is over, Nick.

you must be incredibly sheltered to not know about the 'send nudes' meme and find it that offensive. it's crap but lets not make it something it isn't.

This thread definitely crossed over into creepy gossip. This really does not concern 99.9% of you. Vox media already said they've suspended him and are doing an inquiry, now we're posting victims' twitters in the OP? To what end?

Cause we're part of history now, it's justice or something, it's sexy, lets all get naked.

You're talking about the account in the OP where the person told the OP it was okay to post it?

Her account is locked now but she has given me permission to post this.

That one?

So do you think you could just PM folks on GAF 'Send Nudes' and get away with it?

Go stink up somewhere else with your farts.

...you're replying to a post from like 9 hours ago, when we did not know if she was ok with us posting it. She's since said she is and even sent a statement to the thread, yes, but we did not know before then.

Unless your a public facing employee of the company, who first had contact with these women due to the nature of your employment. Then I do think HR would have something to say to you

People are fucking ridiculous....

Also this isn't even fucking tinder, although asking about it on that is usually shitty because 99% of the time it's unwanted.

These are normal correspondences he's having with people in the industry through twitter.

This is uninformed bullshit. The company I work for has a clause in their contract regarding social media. You would get axed if anything like this happened. I'm relatively certain most tech careers carry this same clause due to recent events.

And you are incredible sheltered if you think the only reason he sent that was because its some stupid meme.

Mia Khalifa called out Chad Kelly multiple times for proposition her via DM. Was anyone calling for his scholarship to be revoked or for teams not to draft him?

What if you were a reporter for CNN.com and you were texting this stuff to a bunch of female politicians?

ah yes he was just living that meme life

he was just joking it's not his fault that when people followed through with it he kept memeing them and they didn't realise, he's just an internet funnyman if the women chose to take him seriously that's there fault

right. like that's the only thing you can be saying, right?

either he was joking and it's their fault for taking him seriously, or he was being serious and harassing women. you do not get to have it both ways.

Using the culture surrounding football and pornography as a template for how we should treat women is like the single dumbest argument in this entire thread.
