Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Uhm so wait, are taxes included in the € 744,- I just pre-ordered for (shipping to the Netherlands) or am I going to be hit with an additional 20% (or so) when it passes through customs? That would be uhm, yeah, unacceptable.

Taxes and customs are included, that's why the price is so high for Europe.

I'm speaking from my experience. Had them both on my head and Vive looked way more polished.

I can also +1 this, having had the benefit to try both the Vive was a much better experience. Of course neither were on a level playing field and we won't get this till people get both consumer kits. But if you're going to pay £530+ you might as well get the one with the built in camera and the controllers bundled in to be honest.

Not really, most people consider its high price is a big factor in its slow start and the increased competition from the 360, while before its anouncement it was a given that Sony would dominate the generation. Some even agreed with the infamous "The PS3 would sell even if it had no games".

Can you please drop the slow start shit.

WW the PS3 was outselling the 360 out of the gate. It was only around the Kinect launch period that the 360 outsold the PS3 globally.

Stop with the USA=World stuff.

Also, their program said my i7-3770K is not up to par for VR (along with my usb 3.0 ports which I will rectify with a pcie card since I have no open ports anyway). Understandable since it is a few years old now, but hopefully it isn't a huge bottleneck. Scored 17912 on that firemark 3d benchmark so hopefully I am good.

I cannot see your CPU being a bottleneck, i even think a decently O/Ced 2600k is not a bottleneck regarding the specs required. But my 770 GTX will be one. So 970/980 or waiting for the new pascals GPU.

You tried out the CV model? Where at?

Had a couple people ask me yesterday if there was anywhere they can check out the CV1.

I think only Evilore so far in the thread has specifically mentioned trying out the CV prototype as well as bunch of the others and he was really liking it (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=191418494&postcount=2320).

I don't know that there's much value in inarticulated descriptions of which HMD display is "better" based on 10 minute demos of vastly different content.

I'm going to wait to try the Rift and the Vive before buying one, I had motion sickness with the DK1, and I'm not prone to motion sickness at all, but the DK1 got me hard. They really really are just for development, they are years old tech.
I think that this is one of the reasons that releasing a higher quality/higher cost consumer version is probably the way to go. I was an early Kickstarter backer because I believe in VR, but the DK1 made me so ill within seconds that I'd be feeling nauseous for the remainder of the day that I used it. I had to resort to Gravol after trying TF2 for the first time.

I know that DK2 was a substantial improvement, but "good enough" isn't good enough when it comes to VR. The devkits let you see the potential of VR, but weren't great experiences on their own. If Oculus wants to sell people on VR, the experience has to be fantastic, and without the hiccups of the devkits. I'm glad that they've gone this route, because if they can minimize the chances of consumers having an awful first VR experience, VR is more likely to stick. They can't really mess around on this front.

I really wish they could have at least gotten to 450$ with this. At that price, I probably would've bought it straight up along with the rig I'm planning to build (even with PSVR allegedly right around the corner). I want VR in general to succeed, and the more successful ecosystems are out there the more software everybody is going to get.

I think a lot of people would be willing to pay a premium for a VR system - the thing is, it's an unknown quantity, and consumers will only be willing to pay so much for the mystique of a "new experience". 600$ for a console would be a hard sell, and you already know what you're getting beforehand when you pick that up. To the unwashed masses (like myself) who really want to see what VR is like but have zero hands-on experience, 600$ might as well be a brick wall.

In what way? Sharper images? Better contrast? Smoother motion?

I'm always looking for opinions on screen comparisons only, so this. I know it can be hard to separate that one component from the entire experience, but since I'm mostly going to play retrofitted games (racing sims) in VR, a lot of the other fluff is secondary to me.

At $600 the only thing that will keep this from being DOA is launching with X-Wing vs Tie Fighter VR.

Hopefully they have game changing software lined up...

Eve Valkyrie is a pack in. It might not have the Star Wars brand, but it is essentially what you described. I bet the modding community could have a field day with it.

€699. Once you add delivery €741.

It's not too far off from what you get if you look at the current exchange rate.

Ah, thanks. Seems they are adding tax (roughly 20%) on top of €599.
Taken from my own order info:

  • customs_fee: €0.00
  • customs_fee_tax: €0.00
  • shipping_handling_fee: €34.96
  • shipping_handling_fee_tax: €8.04
  • tax: €130.71
  • total: €742.00

  • cost sans tax/shipping: €568.29 = $616.93

That's basically what Palmer Luckey said last night. He found that the improvements being made with the devkits just weren't enough to guarantee a comfortable experience, so with the additional Facebook resources they shifted focus from keeping cost to the bare minimum to focusing more on quality.

I am intrigued by this.

Do people think PSVR will be the same quality of head unit as Oculus/Vive but at a lower price?

If not, how much do they think the quality will be compromised by the lower price?

Then the big question - how much will the quality be further compromised by the PS4?

Will the resultant experience be heavily compromised to the point that it damages people's view of VR?

Compared to cardboard and gear? Lol no.

Sony's vr has to not make people sick and will have a decent amount of software so it will be fine. Will it be a premium experience? Of course not. It will be good-enough for gamers in the same way that ps4 is good enough. If you cannot stomach ps4 versions of regular games knowing others are playing 4k30fps or 1080/120fps and/or modded versions, then you won't be happy with psvr either. If ps4 is good enough right now for you, then chances are psvr will be too.

Caveat: I know its a cliche, but Sony has to figure out a way for psvr porn to exist without scaring off moms. Most men will want to see that and will feel ripped off if they cannot. & I don't think Sony has a problem with that given their attitude to jpn vita software.

I don't see how it's going to happen.

They can't sell that content through the store. The only option would be using the media player for 360 videos or something. As far as software goes, again, they won't sell it through the digital store. Third party software on disc would be the only way I guess.

Not that I have thought about it too much...

*Expected Ship Date: June 2016. Limit 1 per Customer

Does this mean that I have to wait until June 2016 to get one? :0

Or is this only for Pre-Orders?

Any chance to buy one in April or May without Pre-Order? (ok, probably via ebay)

Preorder is the only option right now. If you didn't preorder earlier your only option is June.

I think Zuckerberg released something yesterday that suggested there might be a small retail presence in April.

Some retailers are supposed to get units in April but the numbers are to be very limited apparently.

Thanks! Ok, more time to increase the 350€ I put aside to 699€. ^^

These are going to sell for an insane premium on ebay in the first month. I already see some on ebay going for $1400 to $1500. That's nuts.

Physical media isnt really an answer and I don't know how they do it without moms freaking out. But if they don't have an avenue for that stuff...well it will be about as appealing as a NintendoVR unit or a "guaranteed family safe" pc for a large chunk of people. It is an interesting topic.

People think Oculus is going to be a walled garden but for me I just think about all the weird sometimes not quite legal things people are going to be making on the PC and I just think to myself "there's no way I'm missing out on that".

The entire time I'd be on PSVR I'd just be thinking about how locked down I feel on the hardware. Same as I do now with it all currently I guess, vr or not.

There's just going to be sooooooo much weird shit people are going to be making.

I think that's why we get a lot of people hoping that they can get a PSVR working on PC.

It will be a cheaper price to enter the market but they also want all that crazy fun shit that will be happening in the PC space.

I kind of want both to be honest because the games on PSVR look great. It's all so pricey is fuck. My hat is in with Oculus right now because it will be easy to hop over the fence in that walled garden.

That's the only way it'll happen, crossing my fingers here! If all sorts of 360 videos can only be accessed through the store or some shitty app, then that'd be quite stupid.

I can't imagine that PSVR won't be compatible with PCs by some non-Sony solution.

I don't see PSVR competing directly with the high-end PC market personally.

I dunno man, seems to be selling pretty well.

Anecdotal evidence and whatnot but I have 7 friends who've all pre-ordered. I personally budgeted for €550 so it's not that much more expensive than I expected.

The games really do look great. I've been really impressed with what I've seen from them, I didn't think the PS4 could do it but Carmack thought it was delightful.

My fear there would be that it simply wouldn't work as well as a native solution, and that you'll always be relying on a enthusiasts community to add support (although sometimes enthusiasts can get more work done than the company's themselves).

The process of making each headset work "cross platform" may not be nearly as difficult as I'm envisioning, but I'd have to imagine that there are some pretty significant differences at this early stage of the game.

Still no ship estimated date for me, still no confirmation email, I even sent a support email explaining everything and still no response. It's in my orders as preordered, I better get it.

I have to admit flipping my March pre-order is getting tempting as these prices climb.
If shipping is truly out several months past release these things will be worth their weight in gold.

Now I wish I pre-ordered a couple.

Where do you guys see estimated ship date? I'm pretty sure I got in for March but I don't see any way to check it. The order status page doesn't say anything about when it'll ship.

I heard that retailers might get limited numbers later in spring (april and forward?).

Extremely limited and USA only.
Enjoy trying to nab the 1-5 units a major Best Buy gets in stock. Especially when that Best Buy undoubtedly preorders 10+ slots.

Yeah, my order page doesn't say anything and I am pretty sure I am in for March. Ordered 3 minutes after orders went up.

It was supposedly on the order summary page after you submit but I didn't look at that too closely.

One per customer, sir! And yes, I honestly expect them to sell for $1500 to $2000 on ebay at some point. Being sold out until June is going to drive prices to crazy heights. I'm in it for the tech, so I can't imagine selling, but I'm not rich, so if it's $2000, it would be hard for me to say "no" to $1000+ profit. But then I would be sad until I got mine, haha. We'll see when the others are released.
