If it's not backwards compatible they should really look for a better name than PS4. No reason to keep the name if you aren't keeping the platform.

For those people who are more technically minded do the rumors look like something that would benefit from a SSD? I know we dont even know if you will be able to swap drives in the new PS3 (i doubt we will given the vita approach but I still hope) but im kind of hoping that we will be able to. SSD makes a small difference on PS3 and a huge difference on PC and as the ps4 is supposed to be close to PC im wondering if we will see something like that for a performance increase if we swap drives, again assuming we can.

The rumors don't suggest whether or not the OS will take advantage of SSDs. But one thing I might be concerned about regarding the rumors is the constant recording while playing. That can shorten the life of an SSD with the constant writes.

Makes more sense than naming incompatible products as if they were compatible. That would be deceptive.

Yeah when I was working in retail people would think that PS2 games would work in PSone, etc. While hanging at GS I've heard others who think 3DS carts work in DS.

While it's just ignorant consumers, even friends who I respect have asked me about 3DS carts, so it is confusing.

Gamecube -> Wii people didn't even know the games were compatible often.

Xbox-> Xbox 360 people were mad when a game wasn't.

Many wanted a PS3 that was BC, but when it was only used they caved.

So, what's your opinion on the SNES?

If it were named NES2, it would be different.

To be fair to Nintendo, classic cartridges had many hardware dependent characteristics that made bc much more difficult. (although I imagine incompatibility also has to do with their desire to lock out non licensed 3rd parties)

You must admit there is a trend, My PS3 plays its games in addition to PS2 and PS games. Sony started this precedent. It is not unreasonable to assume backwards compatibility without further inquiry. BC has never been easier for a console manufacturer to implement: CPU architectures are fast and mature, emulation techniques are well developed, games no longer have hardware components in them, they all are on standardized discs or digital downloads.

So I don't see their situations the same. If the PS4 doesn't at least have PSN compatibility (they could at least request developers send recompiled version of everyones existing content for the new architecture, assuming they keep the platform apis same/similar to that of the PS3), I will be very disappointed. I guess we'll all find out in a few weeks.

I looked more at the source of http://www.playstationmeeting.com and noticed this (in XHR):

Code:

	<div class="content-block-video">

    });
		 jwplayer().onComplete(function() { redirect(); });
</script>
	  </div>-->
The video (http://content.bitsontherun.com/videos/lWMJeVvV-364767.mp4) is Giuseppe Vetrano's Alone in New York from 2010. We know that the PlayStation Meeting is going to be in New York. Is this video supposed to tell something or is Giuseppe involved somehow in all this, maybe he has directed some PlayStation related video for the event?

Intresting. This Giuseppe fella is probably hired to do an announcement/reveal video for the new Playstation as you said.

First I have heard of him, but I enjoyed watching the short just now.

While watching, I randomly wondered how many hot dog joints in NYC claim to have "The Best". Heh.

edit: Looking at some more work he has done on his site, I am picturing clips of the PS4 hardware blended with shots of the many people from all over the world who will be playing as a beautiful piano track pushes us along... whatever his involvement is, it will most likely be good.

And I see we had similar thoughts, Rösti. :D
