Resident Evil Movie - Teaser Trailer

Zach Cregger himself breaks down the trailer:

  • Movie takes place alongside the events of RE 2
  • Mostly takes place over the course of one night
  • This is another guy on his own objective outside of Raccoon city during those events
  • He is trying to get inside of the city while the T-virus has already broken out
  • The nuke at the end of RE2 does not take place in this movie, it is before that
  • He wanted the movie to emulate the game's feeling of facing bigger threats
  • This also means having the protagonist be aware of resource management and health
  • Points out that protagonist starts with pistol
  • Eventually finds shotgun, then MP5
  • A lot of the movie has a steady cam following the protagonist to emulate a third person game's visual language
  • There is also some first person scenes
  • He wanted there to be tension and slowness like in Resident Evil
  • Does not have a 'nemesis' character in the movie due to the above
  • He wanted to make a Resident Evil movie where you're following an average joe with little to no combat experience who is learning his guns and adapting to his environment
  • The box the protagonist is carrying is important
  • Doesn't reveal yet what the big naked obese guy does yet
  • Wants the smaller threats to be actual threats
  • Movie focuses a bit more on the T-virus creatures than the regular zombies
  • Has a unique creature that is hinted at
  • There is an herb in the trailer and other things that people might notice on second viewing
  • He likes RE4 the most, and also liked RE8, loves the older games (especially RE2) for their tension and puzzle solving, but he loves the replayability of 4 the most

I don't even know what this means. A good writer-director wrote and directed a film that specifically references the rules and tropes of the series (healing items, weapon upgrades, scrounging, puzzles, Umbrella, etc), telling a new story in the world where the Umbrella outbreak happens.

How is that a "Random Horror film with a Resident Evil logo slapped at the end?"

I don't know what people want? A shit fanwankery film of Chris and Leon, retelling the garbage story of the games? Probably.

Normal dude on a mission scavenging for supplies/weapons in a residential/city zombie outbreak as he fights through all kinds of viral monstrosities?

This director knows what he's doing. Finally.

Right? Like yeah, it could be bad, but this is absolutely a best case scenario. A really good filmmaker who loves the games making a film based on the games, AND ignoring the stupid as shit storytelling beats (but probably making some good nods/fun moments to it).

I need to make my peace with the fact that some people just have bad taste.

Who the hell is that supposed to be? The protagonist looks like he got lost on the way to a completely different set and wandered into this trailer.

looks pretty good... doesn't necessarily scream Resident Evil, but I mean we had RE games before that went a completely different route thematically, like RE7 for example... so 🤷

Looks better than the recent live action adaptations at least, I dont know which was worse that TV show or the film with the zombie walking on fire set to music

The only way to adapt RE is by making a vaguely RE flavoured horror movie so it probably wont get better than this. They're some of the gamiest games around (this is a good thing) and the themes, tone and pacing wont ever translate directly to a film.

Doesn't resemble Resident Evil at all...

... then again everybody praises the overrated garbage which destroyed the vibe of the original trilogy that was RE4.

Come at me, bro.

We'll see. Can't imagine it being worse than the absolute atrocity of "Welcome to Raccoon City".

Doesn't look like resident evil at all
Bro we've had
  • zombie outbreak with giant fucking zombie sharks, crows, and spiders
  • worldwide bioweapon outbreak with giant hulking terminators
  • Giant zombie plants
  • Dudes with Matrix super powers
  • Generic Spaniards and giant fish
  • Roided up agents punching fucking boulders
  • Inbred rednecks with black cum monsters
  • Vampire mommies, Quasimodo that fucked a fish and had a retarded kid, a poster from /b/, and female Jared Leto
So what exactly does Resident Evil look like? Because even if we don't count the animated/live action films there isn't really a cohesive look to any of it. At this point it's just sci-fi horror.

There are countless examples of people who were freaking out about the TV shows where the creators said they didnt play the games and wanted to just do their own thing with the I.P.? Now we have a huge fan of the series and who wants to bring something new to it while still paying tribute to the source material and people are still freaking out. You can't win. People don't know what they want until you give it to them.

Looks better than any other live action Resident Evil film that's come out previously.

I have a soft spot for the original film for reasons, but this genuinely looks like it'll be better. Plus with it being Cregger, and his own take, I feel like it certainly will be.

I don't get how this doesn't look like Resident Evil. It looks like the main character is an average Joe of sorts, and he's clearly going through the motions around the time shit initially hits the fan. I don't need to see another movie that tarnishes the characters and designs we're attached to. I'd rather it be a new/fresh take in the universe. There's panic, there's zombies, there's creatures. It's Resident Evil.

I genuinely think some people just want the new Super Mario movies but with Resident Evil.

Mr. X has Jill Sandwich and Chris Impregnate My Sister cornered in the RPD police station when an explosion suddenly fills the screen with debris, and when the smoke clears... IT'S TOFU!!!

THE CROWD GOES WILD!!!

I'm of the opinion that it doesn't need to copy the games to be good (I actually think the original movie from 2002 or whatever is pretty entertaining and didn't feel the need to try to copy it a ton), but I mainly just wanted to join you in the bolded part.

I remember being annoyed when it came out and never played it because it ruined the vibe I loved so much. I recently started playing the remake and I still think it's overrated (never really played the original I played the beginning multiple times but never enough to say I played it.

Probably the most overrated game of all time.

RE7 is very "Resident Evil". It's definitely more true to the series than 5 or 6.

in a game design sense yes, in a thematic sense absolutely not.
they successfully demoed the game without anyone knowing it's resident evil, a year before being unveiled fully.

Because they demoed it as a VR game where you're just sitting in a chair... of course no one knew it was RE.

Looks good.
Personally I prefer adaptations like this where they tell an original story set in the world of the game.
1:1 adaptations are pointless, specially these days when even 10 years old games have good animations and voice acting. Just play the game, it's going to be better anyway.
