Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

Yes I did, just reinstalled everything and all good now. Cheers.

I've got to get a controller now. I wonder if I can connect a third party Wii U controller or X1? Fairly impressive actually, clear and smooth motion for the demos. The left and right borders of the phone itself are a minor distraction on first use, I imagine they'll soon be forgotten. Having Netflix and your own movies etc is quite cool.

What's the best cleaning method for the lenses, standard monitor/tv cloth only?

Just pick up the Steelseries XL. It's a smidge pricey but 100% totally worth it.

I got my registered on the 3rd of February, and i still ain't got no email.
I've messaged them incessantly, but they're clearly dicking me around, so i got fed up and caved in, getting a used one from Amazon.
At this point i just expect their free GearVR offer to be a half scam or something, at least over here, maybe they were short on supplies or whatever.

Oh well, at least i'm enjoying VR now, mine (the one i bought on my own) got here today.
Sorry it hear that that is really weird

I switched to an alt account to ditch my embarrassing tag so I could be an embarrassing Naughty Dog fanboy in peace. Ask me anything!
Why is the video resolution so poor in Gear VR? I tried it recently and VR photos seem way more immersive than the videos. The videos look extremely pixelated in the Occulus 360 store. Is there anyway we can get better quality videos ? Also will PSVR ,Rift and Vive's video quality look this bad?

Are you downloading or streaming? Downloaded videos will generally look better.

Also, think about how big HD movie files are, now imagine that resolution in 360 degrees around you. Good looking VR movies are going to be huge files.

Eh, it's annoying, but i'm trying to not let that spoil my impression of VR, which is quite the experience.

I wanted to do a big write up, but i didn't have time, and there's plenty of them online anyway, mine would be redundant.

Only had this thing for a day and a half, and experiences ranged from pretty decent to amazing.
I never thought i'd have the instinctive reaction of recoiling playing a game or watching a video, i thought people doing that in VR were probably not used to videogames, or particularly sensitive, but it actually happened to me a couple of times.

I'll write something longer when i've got the chance to try things a bit more, though.

Ahh streamed it. Will try it again with a VR video stored on the phone.

Tried it today for the first time w/ an S6. The edge blur is the first thing I noticed, and it's annoying for anything that is static or non-interactive (like a movie or TV show). Will have to see how Rift and Vive compare.

Lens fogging up is the biggest annoyance i have for now.

tried to use the in-app video recording to do a video of Dead Secret... sloowwwwwwdown.

I suppose I'll have to either wait for a better solution, or wait for PSVR to do that kind of video coverage.

Just realised this is available in my country now. Gonna order.

What controller are people using? I'm looking at the SteelSeries Stratus XL - does anyone know if I can also use the Windows/Android version with an iPad? One review suggested you could with an "unofficial iOS app" but information is sketchy.

Which phone are you using? I was trying it early and it seemed to run fine. The only thing, and I've noticed this across various things, is the tracking on my S7 seems to have little twitches compared to my previous Note 5.

So anyone tried to figure out how to watch these Pornhub VR videos with the Gear VR yet?

http://gizmodo.com/pornhub-just-launched-a-free-vr-channel-and-it-is-wild-1766603651

I don't know about PornHub but you can watch any downloaded 3D or VR videos in MilkVR (Occulus marketplace download) by placing them in a folder called "MilkVR" in the root of the device or SD card. Also you can view any VR or 3D content, video, website, whatever (Google cardboard games work and the Cardboard camera works, making 360degree 3D photos is pretty cool btw) by installing Package Disabler and disabling the Gear VR service so it doesn't auto launch the Occulus store. Load up the streaming video full screen or launch the software or movie, plug it into the Gear VR and you're ready to go.

I use the Nyko Playpad pro. It works fine with the S7 and is cheap, not the best feeling buttons but it gets the job done.

time to take my meds
i want a virtua boy emulator for gearVR so I know what it's like playing without incredible headaches and eyestrain.

Lots of apps aren't. Edit your build.prop to the device string of the Note 5 ;)

I'm guessing that requires rooting my Note 4, which is sadly an AT&T model which blocks me from rooting. :( Definitely the last time I buy a phone (or carrier locked version of a phone) that does that.

Maybe once the APK for Hulu VR is available online (I didn't see it available yet) I can try sideloading it and seeing if that works. I was able to get the web browser working when an update broke it for the Note 4 Gear VR.

Ah! That sucks mate. I thought AT&T was cracked a long time ago? There are tons of ported roms for AT&T on XDA? Isn't it SD?

Not sure about the iPad functionality, but I have that controller and it works great, really good build quality. D-pad works great with emulated games, analog sticks have a good tight feel to them. Buttons feel good.

Triggers are nice too, but the bumper buttons are kinda meh, sort of like the first Xbone controller version.

I'm having issues with the first screen after Oculus setup... It tells me to put the phone back into the headset and when I put it on my head, I have a screen that is unreadable (it feels as if left side is on the right and right side is on the left). I think I'm supposed to look somewhere to move on but I don't have any head tracking..

Any tip ?

That doesn't sound right. Are you sure the Oculus software finished installing? Did you make an account (or sign in) and get into the storefront before putting the headset on?

If you did all those things and the GearVR UI still isn't coming up when you put it on I would restart my phone and try again. It may take a few seconds to come up also, if it's a black screen just wait a moment.

I did all of that. I took the headset off my head and plopped out the phone just a bit to see what it was displaying. It's a singular screen (I though VR worked with two displays side by side, one for each eye), which might explain why I'm not seeing the image correctly.

It doesn't explain why I have no head-tracking though...

Also, I've just installed a Custom ROM on my phone (XTRESTOLITE) and I'm pretty sure all of this is linked to that.

What was on the screen?

If you've used anything like package disabler, it might have disabled the Gear VR service that is required to sense when the phone is put into the set. Maybe your ROM does a similar thing.

For weeks now I've been having issues with Oculus Video. If I try and watch a video in any of the cinema rooms, the room itself disappears and the video just floats around. Every time.

Anybody else have this issue?

so I bit the bullet and bought package disabler, I feel like my Gear VR needed this as it opened it up to a whole new world of VR stuff on the play store....

I get why Samsung/Oculus want to make sure the stuff that is on the store is good, but there is some real excellent stuff on the play store, a lot of drivel as well, but 99% of it is free so why does it matter?

and that roller coaster app for £1.99 is amazing

Fuck man, all this Gear Vr is doing, is making me all the more depressed i can't get a Vive.
The burning desire to inspect things, walk around and touch them is real.

Hopefully the PSVR will satiate that thirst for a bit.

What's the app called? Is it video or rendered 3D?

Wanted to buy this, because it's cheap. I've an Oculus Dk2. I wonder how good this is? Could you sync a controller like Wiiu pro to play those games?

I've also a galaxy s6 phone.

I only played with cardboard, still waiting for my gear vr, but i had that same feeling just a few minutes after turning it on. I was trying on the cardboard demo in which you are at Versailles palace and there was a moment in which my mind was like "wow, that thing over there looks cool, walk towards it!" And it took me a split second to realize that i could not do that or even try to do that because i was in a very tight spot. Still, it was enough to make me think that room scale VR is definitely a step up from sitting VR. In fact, almost every demo I've tried had made me stand on my feet so i can easily look around so i believe less and less that PSVR and Oculus propositions are going to cut it. But yeah, I don't have a gaming PC so i really don't know if i should spend all that money.

Oculus is still the best one out there. I suggest buying that before psvr.

- best gfx and games
- you have many more Apps you can use.

Still think hololens would work better against motion sickness. There is a new one in development that can do both. Hololens & vr

If i had to go for a PC one i'd go for the Vive for sure, but the thing is, nearly a thousand Euros (with tax, shipping and all) for a first gen headset, i can't justify it, even if they are obviously better (and i'm a PC gamer mostly).
PSVR isn't as good, but it's also half the price.

Again, remember that the Rift isn't really 599 here in Europe, with VAT, shipping and customs, it's closer to 800€.

That's a steep price for something that will likely see a successor (maybe with eye tracking, better res, better FOV and who knows what else) in a couple of years.

It was an initial screen that asks you to sit and then a prompt appears to tell you to look at it.

The problem is the lack of head tracking and the display that is not split.

So to get at stuff like this, can't you just use the Sideload VR app that comes free? Or did you do something else to be able to negate the standard viewing?

did not know about that, though i do like the package disabler as it takes 1 sec to use... my own fault for not downloading it when it was free

I just tried Netflix and the pointer stayed on screen which was annoying because as soon as I moved my head (even if it's imperceptible to me) the controls were back up. Isn't supposed to go away by itself ?

Also, I thought there was another theater setting other than the cabin in the mountain but don't know how to access it.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

Are you trying to watch 4k video? The phone can't handle videos at that resolution and render the environments at the same time so it switches to the void theatre.

There's a pretty decent free fishing game on the store called Bait.

Sorry, I have no idea.
