The Kickstarter is likely demand theater and/or the amount Yu needs to get the license from Sega.

Yeah, it seems like it. But think of the cost of these rewards. That's gotta be a big chunk of the $2MM after Kickstarter fees and such. This is just a marketing campaign for the real deal, and those funding who are the true fans are basically just buying collectors editions.

Funny how I just played Shenmue II on the DC this past February and my son watched with amazement the entire time. And tonight right when they announced the Kickstarter he came down to get me to tuck him in for bed, and when I told him they just announced Shenmue III he got the biggest smile on his face. He even said, "but I thought there was never going to be another one?"

Whomever is funding this, thank you for making two generations of Shenmue fans very, very happy.

So here's a little irony:

This reminded me that I've never actually played Shenmue 2. So I took a quick look into how I could do that; I'm in Europe, so I do have multiple choices.

However, the one that requires the least hassle would be playing the Xbox version on 360... using the backwards compatability. Which was probably my most pleasing takeaway from the Xbox conference (albeit then One-360)

But the first one have been created with more than 40 millions of $, so how this game can be developed with only 2 or 4 millions ? Or maybe Sony is testing the waters ?

I'm pretty sure the dev cost will be much more than 2mil, this is just for offloading some costs. Either Sony of Sega have to pay the rest (what is up with license from SEGA?)

To be honest this is better than Capcom and Konami's approach to some of its IPs. I'm glad games are being made from kickstarter that otherwise would not be possible.

I'm gonna say early 2018 for Shenmue 3. Once they arrange with real investors they'll start developing the groundwork. Unless they have the budget to hire a crap ton of people. While in GTA or Witcher there are lots of macro assets, there are going to be tons and tons of indoor micro assets to be handcrafted.

Lol, the $2 million isn't fully funding the game. It's there to gauge initial interest and demand. Sony are obviously co-funding this, hence the exclusivity. It's guaranteed they'll pitch in after interest is cemented.
