Sony’s CEO Said Pokemon Go Is A “Game-Changer”, Will “Aggressively” Enter Mobile

Even after two months and steady decline of user base, people still believe Pokemon Go is gamechanger social app, both Kaz Hirai and gaffer alike.

I find the reports of Pokemon Go's death have been greatly exaggerated.

This was two weeks ago.

Making them and getting them to sell are two different things. Sony needs to recalibrate their definition of what a handheld game is, because since the PSP they've been stuck with the concept of creating console-like experiences on non-console devices. That won't fly on mobile.

Which is the reason why the created a mobile game studio in march 2016. And they know how to make mobile games. As I've already said, they already have a mobile game that makes them $200k in revenue a day. Now they want to create more of them.

Sony owns more then just "PlayStation" ip. The mega popular Wheel of Fortune is an example.

The poster already said Sony has a $200k/day mobile game on the market already, which means they've recalibrated some time ago. Xperia Play is old and Playstation Mobile stopped last year. Seems pretty obvious that they went under the radar while we weren't paying attention.

I like the concept of Pokemon Go, but after a few hours of chasing my nephews around to make sure they don't walk out into the streets and into peoples yards, there are some aspects that simply will always be a problem.

I guess that next question would be... where does it go from here? The game is essentially... a treasure hunt. Can it realistically be improved? Is gps technology up to par?

Pokemon Go's success not because of Nintendo, it is because of Pokemon.
Lots of my casual friend or workmates didn't realise Pokemon & Nintendo.

Sony! it is nothing to do with Nintendo, it is 100% Pokemon.

While the Pokemon brand is split between three companies, the Pokemon trademarks are all owned by Nintendo. What this means is there is no Pokemon without Nintendo. So Nintendo is Pokemon. It's crazy when you think about it, but Nintendo owns all the characters, likenesses, names, and creatures that inhabit the Pokemon universe.

So yes, it is accurate to say that the 3 companies each own a 3rd of the Pokemon franchise. The analogy I use is this, if the Pokemon franchise is a car Nintendo owns the engine and wheels and transmission, the other two companies split the rest.

Eugh, Sony is at their worst when copying Nintendo though. PlayStation Move, execs dressing up in onesies and striking 'cute' poses for Twitter pics and now this.

I'd like them to give a wide berth where mobile gaming is concerned, but Kaz is a man with a plan and has done a great job of turning around the company's fortunes, so I'm in no position to critique him.

but i will anyway - fuck mobile

If it's a way to release old IP games that would otherwise perhaps not find a space in today's console gaming, why not?

Hopefully they take their time and develop meaningful experiences that are tailored to the mobile space instead of rushing to cash-in on the Pokemon Go craze (which is already crashing down apparently).

Sony has plenty of great IPs, but afaik they have nothing anywhere close to a Pokemon IP level franchise.

You feel again that Nintendo always needs to show them how it's done? That's a pretty baited statement in my opinion. Sony succeeded in the gaming industry by going in a very different direction to Nintendo. Of course they do some pretty blatant copying from time to time, but at least in this instance they are being very open about taking inspiration.

I think Sony does it very well in what they do basically. I realy don't think Sony does need Nintendo. You need to ask them why.
Maybe because the console business has a hugh drop

More Drake phone games please. (I never played one)

Is Pokemon Go still a thing? Haven't heard much of it in a while, thank goodness.

Good idea gofreak, I will take a Gran Turismo on my phone though. Yes Please! Garage management, and AI mode coaching, then race the ai against other people.

GT Mobile would come out faster than Polyphony GT games at least :(

As long as they relegate the task to some small new non-important studios and won't take dev resources away from the people who do their big games.

Uncharted GO.

Search for hidden treasures in the world via your phone app.

Then when you get there you have to kill everyone else looking for it

The best franchises that I think could work on mobile is Ape Escape or Locoroco.

Call it Ape Escape GO. Collect/Capture different apes.

Playstation Move is genuine.

It is an original and slightly inelegant solution to 3D positional tracking. But it is in-line with the wacky late gen side experiences that Sony started offering during the PS2 era. Move is part of the long journey from the Eyetoy to PSVR.

Isn't Pokemon Go dying in popularity?

Granted it's still popular, but it seemed to have died down a bit.

No crazy craze stays crazy for ever, it's died down naturally, but the good Pokemon stops and spawn points are still packed as hell, certainly weekends.

I'd hope sony realizes the success is due jn huge part to the strength and appeal and nostalgia of the brand. They can't just slap out a PlayStation All-stars Go and have success...

There was one article I read where they have some of the big wigs of gaming corporation commenting about Pokemon Go and they simply say this AR monster collecting genre is only reserved for a IP as beloved as Pokemon.

People don't want to catch Mouse #1, #2, #3, it has to be Pikachu.

it's easy money on cheap software (if you do it right), you think big corporations won't go after that? and it's pretty much the mainstream in japan

Yeah but

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/sony-cuts-smartphone-tv-production/

Sony doesn't exactly have a great record with their mobile department to begin with.

This is chasing after a golden egg that they can't hope to achieve on the scale of Pokemon. They just don't have an IP for it. Anything that copies Pokemon Go won't get the same response, and Sony aren't exactly the most creative developers.

The problem comes from having to "Do it right".

It's highly unlikely that this was a recent decision. Sony would have begun software preparation for this at least a year or two back at least.

Overstatement of the century. Pokemon Go is already half of what it was 2 months ago. Sony going all-in based on that is just hilariously bad for business.

Yeah, I saw it. You said "lol Sony copies Nintendo", then "maybe not" and now "yep, totally copies Nintendo" based on the exact same information. You're basically talking to yourself.

First of all where did "lol" come from and second, you still missed the part where I was replying to someone's post. Keep in mind I didn't read where it said "Game-Changer" in the first thread, only this thread to which I quoted myself. Is there something wrong with that? In your mind it probably is so I wont even bother. Also, where did "copies" come from? I said "inspiring." Does the PS1 look like a NES? Does Playstation games look and play like Nintendo games today? The same can be said about Microsoft. Does the OG Xbox look like a PS2? You're taking inspiration as copying which history shows between Nintendo and Sony that that's not even true.

Funny how people say that Pokémon Go is lightning in a bottle, as if Pokémon is some new fad. It's an IP old enough to vote, drink, and be in porn.

But then every time Nintendo succeeds at one thing or another, it's just "lightning in a bottle." I mean damn at this point they have so many different streaks of lightning in so many different bottles that they could open a store.

That's very bad to read.

They should focus on what they can and is important, not on mobile. They will never have a mobile game close to the success of Pokemon Go.

I mean, honestly, as much as I like Uncharted and all, I don't think it's at that kind of level as an IP. Pokemon is this thing that was a mega-fad, and then stayed relatively popular for decades since, and was rife for a nostalgic based revival on a new generation of platform. I doubt the Uncharted IP will even be around in another decade to be honest, and I say that as someone who enjoyed the games and is primarily a PS player.

Uncharted is not only not on the same level as Pokemon, but globablly, it has hundreds of millions of fewer fans.

Wishful thinking though ;)

You guys misread me entirely. I was jokingly suggesting that, since Pokémon Go was already causing accidents for some careless folks, an hypothetical Uncharted title that actively pushed them to Nate Drakesque adventures IRL would be lethal.

Come the hell on, me suggesting Uncharted could beat Pokémon's phenomenon lol, give me more credit than that would ya.

How can people be this stupid?

-Pokemon go invented nothing, there were already games like that before pokemon go, even from sony itself, the reason of the success of pokemon go is it's being based pokemon, nothing else, no matter how much better a game will be, no game will have the same success

-despite its great success pokemon go is dying(correct me if wrong) and financially it was a bubble.

Trying to go after the success of pokemon go is the most stupid thing one can do.

your going in a bit hard, I dont see what you are getting at really. Companies are always trying to go after things that did well (iphone, cod etc) so why are you saying this?

Pokemon and everything will die sure...

sony devs are very creative for the console games. said that, i agree with you and i posted that above. pokemon is pokemon, sony doesn't have it. but it doesn't take creativity to create a gacha
they cut their mobile production but they can sell games on phones regardless of the brand
