The Order 1886 at PSX - Impressions, Gameplay, etc.

Never heard of this site but:

If I am being completely honest, having played The Order: 1886 at E3, it didn’t ‘wow’ me. Seeing at in action during the PlayStation Experience piqued my interest in the seemingly by the books third-person shooter. In the end I found out that there is a lot more under the hood than just a corridor shooter.
The Zeppelin mission that we played, was a wonderful display of the mechanics and the shooting. It was the first time that Ready At Dawn have shown something besides shooting to the public. It should be noted that it is the fifth level in the game just incase anyone is worried about spoilers.
The intensely tight corridor mission, gives us a chance to try out the great stealth mechanics and other aspects of the game. Such as the newly revealed electrical tampering that allows players access to doors or to distract guards by shutting off lights. Also shown was the lock picking mechanic which is very similar to many other lock picking types having to get the pin at the exact precise moment. Thankfully if you make a mistake you don’t have to start over again, looking at you, just about every other game that has a lock picking mechanic.

The Order: 1886 looks to be a sufficient shooter with some great story behind it. The combat is fluid and fun, the quick-time events are well done and will keep even the twitchiest gamer on their toes. The shooting may be by the books but the atmosphere and setting attempt to make up for it. It took me around twenty or so minutes to get through the mission, which included cutscenes. So hopefully the full game will be a weighty experience but until then, we can continue admiring the graphically rich experience that Ready At Dawn has created so far.

Great impressions! I will assume that the amateurish AI is because of demo purposes. Prefer to play on Hard anyway.

So can somebody explain to me what was going on in the Lycan fight? As in, what inputs are being done and how scripted is the sequence? Looks great either way. Love the grotesque Lycan design.

Did you play a different demo than me? I only had the two-story fight and kitchen fight, with a brief section inbetween. No rappelling or stealth.
Just got back, honestly no clue.

Edited to add:

Did you get to use the Sniper rifle?

Edited again: If responses take a min sorry I am at the Dice table.

The first involves what we already know: the blurring of gameplay and cutscene. The chapter begins with the infiltration of an airborne zeppelin by The Order—our playable protagonist Galahad, alongside Percival, Igraine, and Lafayette. Mid-cutscene, control was subtly handed to me as the troupe began to repel down the zeppelin’s side to platforms below. As I went, the angle stayed cinematic, inverted with a constant reminder of our incredible height over sprawling London. Landing on metal framework below, Lafayette and Igraine meandered ahead, weaving through openings and across thin railings. For a few moments, I was unsure whether Galahad would move on his own or needed my direction. This was the only spot of momentary confusion; my control of the action was generally well-communicated through tooltips subtle enough to not break the moment
The focus here was almost exclusively on a second gameplay pillar: stealth. Galahad automatically entered a crouched state as I moved between walls and bits of cover, out of sight of nearby guards. Stealth kills are important, but harder to pull off than merely pressing a button. The button press is timed with some exactness; hitting Triangle too early had the guard turning around, shaking me off, and instantly killing me.
The aforementioned zoomed-in camera is a better fit for combat because it puts visibility high on the list of tactical advantages. Combat as a whole is weighty—even a bit sluggish—and supported by animations that pare back your superhuman mobility in the name of realism and intensity. Guns kick back with thunderous force, while the slight looseness of aiming effectively simulates Galahad’s unsteadiness without erratically moving the reticle. The guards put up a serious challenge, too, rarely popping out of cover for more than a couple seconds and nearly always hitting me if I was exposed.

Besides its outstanding graphics, borrowing cinematic tropes like film grain and depth of field, The Order’s shooting is the best thing going for it. It’s a strong gameplay core on which to try interesting things like “controllable” cutscenes. They blended well with my demo’s moment-to-moment action for an experience that, despite its varied feelings of play, never felt disjointed.

The demo began immediately with the two-story fight where I had a sniper rifle and was firing at rebels on the lower level. After that fight, a rebel commander appeared and Galahad gave chase...at this point, I believe it jumped ahead to a later point in the level starting with people evacuating in escape pods. Following this cutscene was a slower section which involved using the Tesla device to unlock a door to the weapon storage room. After that, I got to the kitchen fight and the demo ended after Galahad and Perceval became separated.

That is weird from what I read it does not begin there.

How was the shooting controls and general gameplay? Sorry if I missed your impressions if you have posted them already.

Surely we are not having the whole "I need MP to justify price tag" comments again. Not every game needs MP.
Well it's not like you can mod the game for longevity or anything. I'm not saying every single player game needs it. But it makes it alot harder to swallow that $60 price tag. I'm not saying I won't pick it up, I just might not pick it up while it's $60

Aiming sensitivity and acceleration curve felt great if that's what you taking about. Movement was fine and the gunplay was very satisfying. I think the combat is solid enough to carry the game, provided the encounter design is compelling enough.

Good to know! Thanks for the impressions!

I have loved everything I have seen on this game so far, and up until the impressions posted, was questioning my sanity since so many people seemed to hate it.
I have always seen a solid Third Person Shooter, not doing anything new, but for sure doing awesome visuals with a truly awesome art direction (yes, I like the black bars).

Really I think TPS's at their simplest can be broken down into 2 distinct categories. Open World & Traditional.

Since this game does clearly fall under traditional, I have not once seen anything, at least when they have shown gameplay, that has indicated they are doing traditional gameplay worse than any other TPS out there. Clearly this is not Max Payne 3 where the amazing gun play gameplay is on hand. This is a classic corridor based TPS. It looks to do this quite well.

I very much look forward to playing it. Already have it preordered in fact.

Last post of the night drunk and mad lost a lot and fast as shit at the dice table. After thinking about it my favorite two games were the Order 1886 and Drawn to Death. Both were amazing in their own ways and there was nothing else I played that was as fun as either of them. Bloodborne felt very early and unless that is an old build I wouldn't think it would be ready by march of next year.

Note to self Stay out of the casinos.....

The Bloodborne demo was the alpha build from early October, which itself was just the E3 demo with online functionality, IIRC.

many gamers prefer single player over MP. MP is a borefest in many games and should only be confined to games like COD and BF. This game doesnt need MP. Look at Wolfenstein, it was an amazing SP experience because they focused on SP not plastered a useless MP which takes resources away from the experience. many gamers just dont care about MP

Amen
Tired of devs wasting time forcing multiplayer in everything. They just see it as a means to try to keep people interested enough to slap em with a Season pass.
Give me my 100% single player experience.

If i want multiplayer, i will seek out the games that do it right.

glad to hear about impressions.... especially drawn to death, looks mad... MP fans should get that!

Lol people acting like every game needs MP.... Single player gamrs are as relevant today as ever.... Most games MP are tacked on bored fests that get ignored... Outside games like cod, destiny, battlefield most games mo are crap and deaf. Waste of resources in many games.... Sony has many MP games.... Not every game needs MP.

I'm all about single player games and I'm glad Sony is still delivering high-quality SP experiences. Only Nintendo puts as much faith in SP gaming, but I'm just not a Nintendo player any more, by and large. Glad to hear some good impressions. I'll admit this this game was very low on my radar but I'll at least follow it a little closer now.

Yeah, I couldn't justify buying a $60 8-10 hour single player only game. I hope it turns out well, though. Nice to see the positive impressions coming out.

Honestly, I would much prefer a 10 hours great game than a 30 hours one that drags on forever.
And then there was Beyond: Two souls. Longest most tedious 10 hours of my life.
