The Problem With The Steam Machine: Its Current Gen

The benefit to the Steam Machine is it's ALL gens. Games from the 80s will work, and games 20 years from now will work. You aren't locked to 1-2 gens like consoles. SteamOS is the selling point. You buy a game once and you have it forever on multiple devices.

Yeah, my Raspberry Pi 4 too

That doesn't make it a good gaming device for $1000+

Just found out the steam machine storage (512gb lol) is less than half the speed of the ps5 storage.

"next gen"
"now"

Pick one.
Pick what? If you want a "next-gen" PC get a 5090 and a X3D AMD CPU. It's leaps and bounds better than what a PS5 Pro and XSX can do and it'll still outperform whatever PS6 and Helix turn out to be.

Next Gen only really works as a term for consoles. Only thing holding you back is how much money you want to spend on parts

So "next gen proof" PC. Now it makes sense.

PS5 is still undisputedly stupid value for money compared to this thing even when you factor in the £59.99 online fees. PS5 with 5 years of online play would still work out cheaper than a Steam Machine with less cost up front. You'll also lose less percentage wise when you come to sell a PS5 in 5 years compared to a Steam Machine.
