what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

I've found that it's helpful to just be super passive aggressive and subtle when you're insulting people.

I was banned for 30 days for being passive aggressive in response to someone who was anything but. 30 days, and he got off scott-free.

The lesson learned is you're always at the mercy of moderators who do not treat everyone equally.

Maybe the moral is just to be a straight shooter? Don't be passive and don't be aggressive. Say what you need/want to say and leave. It's a forum, which means its one and only purpose is to have like-minded people sharing un-like minded ideas.

How can someone be like-minded and yet un-like-minded? If I thought the same as everyone else then I wouldn't have been called brainless for the opinion I expressed, to which I would not have passively-aggressively replied (and to the mods, this is somehow worse than being outright insult and dismissive of other people's opinions).

Read the announcements. They often add bannable offenses there and if you didn't find out something was banned recently, you can get yourself on the list. I didn't know 'master race' was banned a year back or so and a few weeks later I casually dropped it in a conversation and got a month ban for it. Learned my lesson.

I hope to never be banned. I assume it's pretty easy to NOT be banned, since basically if you aren't a jerk, you won't get banned. Or do something to upset the mods, of course.

I was banned once for insulting somebody, so totally deserved.

I tend to say a lot of stupid stuff when I am drunk and bored, which happens quite frequently lately, so probably in a few weeks my name will be grayed out too. Destiny.

I'll try my best to behave, though!

Odds are you'll get a temp ban at least once, happens to everyone. I got one for 2 hours one afternoon til Evilore came in and said the girls in the fatgirls thread were fat.

If being a jerk would consistently result in bans, there would be a lot more grayed out names in OT.

I think I may have said this already earlier in this thread, but make sure to read the last couple of pages in a thread. A mod could have given warning to behaviors or topics that have gotten out of hand and are asking people to stop.

Happened to me a while back where I jestingly made a joke post about a user and on that same page or the page before I didn't realize a mod just said not to do it. I didn't realize it until it was to late...

I'm seeing people make a similar mistake in the 'New Features' thread. lol
Luckily, that thread was moving fast so i think its understandable.

This is actually SUPER good advice. One I do not follow that often while I should.

The real secret to never being banned is to never post. You never post, you never get banned.

Is honesty important?

It depends on the context. In general it is important, but it is not the most important thing. Why would honestly in the abstract be more important than something that necessarily has a negative affect on other people? What I'm trying to say is honesty is important if being honest causes a net positive affect on the universe. If lying causes a more harmonious, positive outcome then lying should be chosen over honesty.

It's impossible to tell any exact outcome to any specific decision, but try to be as objective as possible about what the outcome might be when figuring out if you're going to lie or tell the truth.

Thanks a lot! I do enjoy your musings, edit: not that this wasn't solid -as in light.

There are plenty of lurkers for that reason alone.

If you never make an attempt you'll never achieve the glory. You can always lurk after you're banned. Also approximately 3% of current users were previously permabanned (most of them as junior members). I might have made that statistic up, but maybe I didn't...

Some laugh at those who put the '/sarcasm' tag in their posts, but it could save you from a banning, especially if you're a lesser-known poster like myself.

I've just stopped using sarcasm, even though it was only a one-week ban.

Just don't do stupid shit or say stupid things. Seriously. I've only ever been banned because I've ignored these rules. Think before you post.

I've been banned twice and both times have been in the VGA's thread on gaming side. 2011 and 2012 lol

I think the mod who banned me this past year is probably a big bang theory fan since I called one of the guys on that show a douche in real life (based on interviews I've seen him in)

Other year I said Todd Howard's hair was messy (super light hearted) and reason for ban was "insulting an industry persons appearance." :/

One month ban for both was super harsh. Lesson is to not post in mega threads that are moving really fast because I've had bad luck in those types of threads it seems.

I'm honestly baffled by these two bans. Stuff like this is posted in OT on the reg. No one bats an eye.

If that were the case then we wouldn't need this thread.

Nah, there's some users who need sourced statistical evidence of what actions constitute "being a jerk" and it must be within a specific margin of error. It's probably notable that I'm being a snarky jerk with this post.

Seriously? You got banned for that? Wow...

Yeah...I won't be posting in the VGA thread this year. Lol

I usually don't post in those threads because a) I rarely watch them (this year was the first) b) They're too hard to keep up with because they move so fast, and no one notices your posts anyway, and c) people usually get banned left right and centre in them, like yourself.

Any way to find in a hot hotter or cold colder way how close I am to un-junioring?
I like to think I have been keeping my nose clean.

I've been here a while and never been banned. Of course, I avoid commenting on controversial threads

If that were the case then we wouldn't need this thread.

I would say that 99% of the bans I have witnessed are the result of people not following the "Don't be a dick." rule. The vast majority of the others are from people just being stupid. A tiny, tiny portion I have been confused about.

is there anyone who has been here for 4+ years that's never been banned?

A month shy of 8 years, no bans. I don't post much, I seemingly avoid things that could get me banned, and my particularly idiotic posts have been head shaking at worst and within the limits of the rules.

it's hard to get permabanned on here. don't use any hate speech, pick fights often, insult staff, or spam gore/porn and you'll be fine.

there are far more unwritten rules that will catch you a 2 week + ban.

- don't make fun of certain hockey teams
- don't make fun of nerds even if you aren't directly addressing anybody in the thread or joking
- don't call people viral marketers (even if joking) on gaming side
- don't openly say you have adblock activated on neogaf (one member was perm'd for this once)
- don't express any kind of questionable thoughts or opinions on transsexuals (some have been perm'd for being insulting)

it also seems like some staff have handed out short undeserved bans when bored too so sometimes you'll be banned and it doesn't mean much dealwithit.gif

This will be my fifth year, never been banned. I'm just a pretty swell guy. Don't cause any trouble, and I'm always kind and respectful to other posters, even when I disagree with them.
