Nintendo Ending Wi-Fi Connection Worldwide on May 20th

Seems pretty out of order given they're still selling the Wii. At least when the Xbox online services were shut down the Xbox hadn't been on sale for a couple of years.

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
Man, I remember Mario Kart DS day one with that stupid bloody Wi-Fi dongle that Nintendo sold because at the time I didn't even have a wireless router.

Great memories though.

Well, if the communities are still as active as some people proclaim here, they should just pony up some money. Mario Kart Wii sold over 30 million so it is not like they didn't make any money from it.
Depending on how much they want it may not be reasonable. No reason to let some greedy imbeciles bleed you dry for no good reason.

The only new Wii they're selling has no internet functionality. Pretty sure they're not manufacturing any more standard Wiis at this point. The standard Wii was already discontinued in Japan and Europe.

Actually, they're only selling the Wii Mini now (production and shipment for the old models have been stopped a few months ago), and it doesn't have any internet functionalities... so it doesn't really matter here.

How long until hackers set up alternatives?

Basically This....

If it could be done for Dreamcast, and I think the GsmeCube, then it can be done for the Wii. I'm looking forward to playing Black 2 and The Last Story on an unofficial serve. Fuck you Nintendo.

May I have a cookie?
I never got to purchase all those dioramas in Metroid Prime 3, anybody want to exchange some friend vouchers while there's still a chance?
Hit me up with a PM if you do.

Ugh, I just realized I still haven't picked up everything from the DQVC shop in DQ9. According to the schedule, some of the otherwise tag-exclusive clothing wouldn't be on the shop until May 24th and June 14th.

Now I wish I didn't stop playing the game for 2-3 years and picked those up then. :(

i just realized...

if they manage to do that, does this mean they can improve brawl's wifi with their own servers?...

You sure about that? I can still buy brand a brand new (normal) Wii from most UK stores (Game, Amazon, Argos). Even if we're talking about working through old stock it still seems out of order to do it so quickly with them still on shelves.

Well fuck this, this news just ruined my day. I'm in shock.

Nintendo is telling me that I no longer will be able play Mario Kart Wii online, Brawl online and one of my favorites: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom... :(

This is really happening. It is only a matter of time before the same thing happens with PS3 and 360... I'm very sad. Fuck everything!

Yes, better to fuck over the consumers who already paid for the stuff.

Rebellion said something like 'tens of thousands pounds a year' for a small game like Sniper Elite. For sure, costs would be higher for Nintendo but the number of sales compared to what Rebellion made is also significantly higher.
We are not speaking of some small developer, Nintendo made gangbusters on the DS and Wii.

Also, I don't think the new prices could be that unreasonable? Does the new owner just want to shut down the server business or why do they demand such high rates that every one of their customers leave?

I never paid. I still won't pay. Most games will always have local multiplayer. I don't like it, but I can sure as hell live with it.

Local multiplayer is awesome.

Just think, in five or so years, almost all multiplayer 360 & PS3 games will be unplayable forever. People haven't really thought about this much.

What I'm mostly worried about is downloadable only titles getting lost forever. We've already seen it happen and it's scary. :(

What're the online features in Sin & Punishment 2, The Last Story, and Trauma Center New Blood? Just leaderboards or something legitimately important?

Pretty sure there's an actual online mode (some sort of VS mode I believe) in The Last Story. Think it's just leaderboards for the rest.

Well, it does sound like no new games can be added, so maybe they really are trying to choke it out. At an extreme they may not even want to let Nintendo keep going with them.

Indeed.

While we can chalk this up to Gamespy being bought out and the new owners jacking up the price and preventing network shifts, there is a considerable issue here that people have glossed over.

This is going to become the new standard. Some games will be lost forever. Games you physically own from X years ago will be rendered completely and utterly useless.

So apart from Pokemon I take it nobody figured out any private servers for these. Hopefully with how widespread this is there will be some more effort put into it.

Jam with the Band is the biggest blow for me. I have never played my copy and won't have access to archaic internet unless the virtual DS inside the 3DS uses the same MAC address (my work internet is WEP and a MAC address whitelist). I'm almost tempted to buy a spare copy if there is a lot of music to download (the save NAND is massive).

This is going to affect Europe, right. The service has been on life support for years and where will I get my Shaun the Sheep 3D re-runs now (oh yeah, I'll have to buy them from the eShop). I guess I get to save the few hundred megabytes that the cached video data takes up though...

It was weird. You could play as monsters along with any of the human cast. I think you got allocated characters at random too...

If only it wouldn't be such a hassle to read myself back into Jump Ultimate Stars, I'd play some final rounds. So much better than Smash has ever been...

Pretty dumb that they're closing the servers of their most popular games that many people still play well before the sequels have even been released.

People will point at any little thing wrong as a fault with the "all digital future", but they all serve to make the same point: when something is dependent on an external service that must keep running then there's a good chance one of the cogs in the system breaks for some reason and we lose access to media or information. Granted physical, at least partially offline media will deteriorate too eventually, but it's less seemingly arbitrary as this stuff, where the whims of a few may make the whole thing collapse. It's part of why always online DRM was unappealing and the concept of Xbox One outright abhorrant to enough people to make Microsoft back down, a constant lifeline can and likely will go wrong eventually for good or bad reasons, so better to not depend on it if not necessary. At least digital distribution ideally leaves it as a delivery mechanism, not the aforementioned lifeline.

So what games do you need to download content before it is gone forever?

Dragon Quest IX I believe I already went back to just to download all the quests and guests.

Maybe I should give the Last Story a go with the online. I enjoyed the story mode, but never really bothered with the online.

Oh yeah, I guess Jam with the Band has 50 songs to download. Recommend me some (I think I have like 45 songs left)

Third party games will have online removed as well, right?
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Nights, Castlevania Judgement?...
I found it odd MH Tri was not listed. I think it used a different server (and after this date will be the only use for Wii speak).

But in principle I take it they are turning off the old Apache tomcat server. In principle given it mainly handled matchmaking a private server should be nearly universal if anyone manages to create one (then it will be a matter of changing your DNS to point to that server rather than the real one) an example of this is there were DS homebrew games (a panel de pon clone I recall) that actually used the service.

Is there a way to archive all of Daigasso Band Bros DX stuff with homebrew? That's a lot of songs that will just go away.
Can the save games be dumped? (I know it uses an odd NAND setup) If the answer is yes then that will archive them. How many can stored per cart and how much is there to download though? Distribution runs into copyright issues though given it is licensed music (I'm not sure if the archival purposes defence will overrule this though).

I know that is possible since the Fire Emblem 12 English translation came with saves containing all of the DLC unlocked (some side story maps and special items).

Damn, end of a era. Not the most amazing era, but still a generally pretty alright one. I'm not playing any of those games still, but my dad is gonna be kind of bummed that he won't be able play Dr. Mario online anymore. :lol

Then im like your dad :). Was actually recently thinking of playing it again, better do it soon. Atleast there is Dr. Mario on Wii U now

Too bad, but I think this is a direct result of them building a completely new and different online service (Nintendo Network).

They better dedicate their resources into maintaining and upgrading NN...

I did a search and didn't see Goldeneye listed anywhere. Every couple of months I fire that up and am astounded to be placed in a match within moments. Wonder if that would survive.

Ahhh, Mario Kart DS. :'(

I'm up for a few rounds in that and Metroid Prime Hunters. Let's set up a thread for it!

Same here...

I'm not too sad about the DS games going down since I haven't used a WEP connection in ages anyway, but I will surely miss the days of watching enemy Link, Ness, and Sheik players do naught but crouch repeatedly while 2 minutes stretched out to become 10.

EDIT: I take this to also mean Project M won't be playable online?

Yeah, WEP is the main reason DS online died for me. I have a spare router setup for WEP connection but it is a pain to turn off one router for another just to use one machine online.

Not quite answering your question but I know custom songs could be shared with homebrew so perhaps the official song data can be dumped. Would require people to agree on which songs to download as each would be limited to 50 each.

Maybe I should become the last person to buy a DS flashcart just for the sole purpose of custom JwtB tracks.

I would be annoyed, but I've never been able to connect up an of my DS games in the four years since I purchased a DSi, due to the reliance on outdated security protocols.

Oh I forgot about those. I mean I stopped playing the game yonks ago and I never aimed for 100% (well the lack of streetpassing for the Inn basically prevented that), but kind of sad that one cannot start a new file and get every item.

Then ok, but this opens other questions.
Why does a company not plan long enough and have contracts in place so this could not happen? Why not communicate the difficulties for less backlash?

This of course, is all hypothetical because we don't know if it the true reason.

Multiplayer is not a big part of the game. It's actually a tiny part.

It's basically some sort of Deathmatch and a coop mode, where you fight 5 bosses (from the regular game, but harder) and earn (5) special weapons + items for it. And that's it.

I have it on my backlog since the release, will now try to get those weapons. I don't care about the deathmatch part.

European list of games affected :

Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Skies

Got that one too and haven't played it for 1 second yet :( Is it highscore boards or actual multiplayer?

Maybe people should capture network traffic of those games, so that reverse engineering would be possible.

As a Pokemon fan, I'm kind of pissed. I already retired my Gen IV games, but this year I wanted to do a few more Gen V playthroughs since I found XY a bit disappointing.

I know there are spoof GTS servers, but are their any that support battles?
