What's the deal with Corgis?

They're such strange looking dogs.

I mean, they have such large normal sized heads, with stumpy little bodies.

Why were they bred this way? What kind of use could a corgi be? I mean, I guess they're kind of cute. But still...

I dunno, something about them disturbs me. I both find them adorable and kind of intimidating. I can't process them

They are surprisingly sprightly dogs, you can use them to herd cattle, they nip their heals :O

Other than that just look at the cuteness

Not looking it up.. but going to guess dogs like that usually were hunting dogs that could fit into holes to retrieve game.

Someday I will have a Corgi, hopefully early next year. Want one so bad. I haven't had a dog since I was toddler.

Edit: And they are supposed to be very smart.

They're herding dogs (a trait that is almost impossible to breed out now, supposedly they will herd children, houseguests who leave the party and even eachother in big, frantic corgi circle-herds). The reason they're bred so low to the ground is so they aren't kicked by the animals they're trying to herd (which they do by nipping at them from behind).

And they're fucking adorable, like fat little foxes. They have amazing-looking tails, though they're often docked (well, the Pembroke breed, the Cardigans often aren't) or bred to specifically have short tails.

I expect my wife will be in this thread shortly.

They're adorable, and very intelligent (like most herding dogs)... big dogs in little dog bodies.

Some dogs aren't bred with practicality or functionality in mind.

Corgis are working dogs, originally bred for herding:

one of the oldest breeds of dog in Britain and has been employed for centuries by Welsh farmers to herd cattle, herding the owner's livestock to grazing areas and driving the neighbour's cattle out of gardens and open pastures. In early settlements these dogs were prized family members, helping hunt game and guarding children.

They're really, really cute. My favorite kind of dog. Is it true, though, that their short (cute, little) legs lead them to be more likely to have degenerative arthritis in their legs and similar conditions?

Here's my corgi with a sticker on her head.

Easily the best dog I've ever owned - very smart and obedient. Only problem is that she always seems to be shedding no matter how much you brush. Plus the breed tends to be a little gluttonous.

I believe it. My rottweiler herds my nephew.

Seem like they should be hunting dogs for badgers or foxes or some shit; lil stumpys can burrow into dens. I guess they're herding dogs though. They seem pretty tiny but I don't really know from herding. I guess it helps to be low so they can nip at the heel?

True, but most are. Corgis are an ancient breed. They were most definitely bred with function in mind

Live and learn! I always likened them to vanity pets like the ones celebrities keep in tote bags.

They are stubby lil bastards and you can't help but love them... except the amount of fur they shed, you can't love that.
