EDGE: Sony’s VR tech will be revealed at GDC

I think your prediction/expectation is right

They will probably mention VR, and maybe even show how it looks like, but any actual information wont be revealed. You wont know much more after the reveal than you do now, that is how little we will know.

My expectations are at a minimum

But i got Champions League footie now so whatever!
I can see this definitely happening. Basically a reverse PS4 situation. Show off how shiny it is, and keep specs/price/software hidden for E3.

Very hopeful for what Sony will bring to the table. I'm hoping for an increase in field of view to at least 120 degrees, and that they discuss pixel persistence and latency. I'm not worried about resolution with Sony. Hopefully they can nail the price right.

yosp is, like, openly responding to tweets that refer to the panel as a 'VR panel' and other jokes about virtual reality.

I don't know. If it was me, I'd be quietly ignoring tweets like this if VR was not on the cards...

Then again, yosp can be a master troll ;)

What surprises me more is the fact that Engadget's tweet sounds like they are absolutely certain about a VR reveal. Maybe leaks are starting to sink the ship in the last few hours?

yosp is a master troll btw, I wouldn't count on anything regarding him :D

There's no lifestream unfortunately, some sites are liveblogging it

I'm keeping my expectations very very low, so that way theres no possibility for me to be disappointed

My Bingo card:
- Mentions official PS2 Virtual Reality kit released in 2002.
- PS4 Virtual Reality kit, name not final, design not final.
- Uses Camera + visor-light for positional tracking.
- Single 1080p Oled screen.
- Supports low-persistence illumination but not requirement.
- Headphones output.
- New and improved PS.Move controllers (touchpad or stick controls + speaker).
- Annnounced games support: Resogun, DriveClub, The Witness, Everyone's Gone to the Rapture, Unfinished Swan. "Dozens of games in development".
- NASA Title not being shown/mentioned (developed at Magic Lab, PS.Move guys. Will first be shown at E3)
- LittleBigPlanet 3D, made inhouse at Media Molecule.
- Until Dawn re-announced.
- Virtual Cinema for video playback.
- No PC support mentioned (no official support coming).
- Wired. Uses PS4 AUX port (has a through-pass for Camera).
- Mentiones the advantages a console ecosystem will bring to VR.
- "The biggest step forward since the introduction of livingroom 3D graphics in 1994 by the PS1."
- Releasing 2014, no date/price before E3.

Hoping for at least a third of this (for tonight).

I am so pumped up to wake up tomorrow and to read about Media Molecule's next game.

My Bingo card:
- LittleBigPlanet 3D, made inhouse at Media Molecule.

No way, they are distancing themselves from that IP in all possible ways.

I can't wait to see the NASA project.

New PS Move controller would really surprise me, an interesting one.

Are we sure Sony are even going to have the bloody thing there?

I'm usually the first on board the E3 hype train, but I'm not sure what to expect here with it being GDC.

At this point there'd be a massive backlash if it wasn't

It'll be there, will we get hard details? I don't think so

Just an announcement would be good enough for me :)

E3 isn't too far off so more info won't take long.

Sometimes those are fun too

Nah but I'm 99.9% sure this is happening. There's too much smoke surrounding it for there not to be a fire.

Yeah hehe, they do hurt though.

Wouldn't cutting down the aspect ratio to a more human FOV also Ave the benefit of lowering rendering overhead?
It'll increase it actually, interestingly no one has even attempted to guess the FoV, I don't know if it's because we haven't discussed it in the thread, or just no one knows what to guess. It'll be between 90 and 110 I imagine, drastically wider than anything running on PS4.

I don't see how Resogun would be fun to play on a VR set?

Unless they make it cockpit view.
I don't know about Resogun, specifically, but I don't think VR only works for first person view games. They could do things where you control a free camera, or you're looking in on a set like Luigi's Mansion on 3DS.

I don't see VR being big on console this gen. A good VR experience is 1440p and above at 85-90fps/refresh rate(to get strobing and greatly improve motion clarity http://www.blurbusters.com/faq/60vs120vslb/, lightboost is basically strobing go check the differences from normal lcd to strobed one).

Most games don't offer 60 fps, some of them don't even get 1080p support. I tried the 720p rift and it simply won't cut it for gaming (you can literally count the pixels and see the black grid). On top of that, time goes by devs will need to make sacrifice to make their games run well, either cutting resolution or framerate witch both are extremely important in a VR environment since it's right up to your face.

Game support will also be an issue considering there can't be mods on a console made by community so there won't be backward compatible, currently there isn't much to play on ps4 and VR is going to be e niche on top of that you won't be able to play many games in VR. The rift for example has over 100 games currently running on it it's not even out yet.

As for the hardware, the games made for VR will have to support exactly the resolution and be 60 fps. if the resolution of the game isn't the same as the screen it add blur since the LCD scaling isn't square 1:1. You can't cut a pixel in half. It is apparent but not that big of a deal in a screen or a tv but with something 5 inch from your eyes on top of low resolution it will be like looking at a distances when you need glasses. 30 fps is just headache inducing when you play VR.

The only way they can fix it is reducing the field of view of the physical screen but it will be like watching trough a tunnel. Those are my concerns for VR on ps4/sony VR headset.

What do you folks reckon would be a decent price for a console based VR headset?
I would imagine $150-$200 is the sweet spot.

If I'm going to stand by buying a Wii U with about three or four games I want at $150, I'm going to stand by a VR set with three or four (and potentially more!) games for a maximum of $150-$200. (If there are a ton of games I want, obviously I'll increase my price!)

That being said, I don't think the tech is there to launch at that price. I'm guessing $300 taking a loss on each unit at first. And I honestly don't know if that could hurt it. :s

This is where I'm at. I've come around to a device being present, but I'm still doubtful anything meaningful (tech specs or product details) will come out.

For low quality sure, if Sony is going to release a high-quality one like rumored, it can range from $300-$400.

Oh man, that wouldn't bode well for the thing should it be near the cost of the actual console. Here's hoping for some technical wizardry AND a reasonable price-point.

Creation is going to be amazing. Imagine standing atop a pyramid in MM's game, dropping insane shit everywhere.

Tower defense would be really cool.

Stop what? Not being a fanboy? I'm excited about new tech, from Sony or anyone, but if nothing happens tonight then life goes on. Jesus Christ...

You're assuming anyone who's interested in this event is a fanboy when there's clearly not true. There's many reasons to be excited for whatever is announced tonight and it's not because "Sony". You're basically fanboying the assumed fanboys.

To clarify, the guy you quoted said "I really hope this actually gets revealed tonight and isn't just another massive hype train that goes nowhere". He was saying he hopes the hype lives up to exceptions. It has nothing to do with what you think it was.

Thanks for the fast replies about the livestream. Will read Eurogamers liveblog then, and if my Time Conversion is correct, that is 8:30 PM here in glorious NJ, which means no issues making it. Nice.

I'm fully convinced that Sony can deliver excellent hardware, VR experience and software support for small price.

HOWEVER.

There is a good chance that they will fumble it by not supporting PC and integrating their VR into popular modern engines.

They NEED to attract indie devs, to give them great access to this new ecosystem of entertainment, to hunt them all down and beg/pay for ports. Oculus is coming soon, they need fantastic software support from everyone.

Agreed. I just want them to announce the damn thing. Everything else can evolve over time.

I'm sure this has been discussed already, but the fact that Richard Marks is going to be at this presentation almost guarantees some kind of new hardware device is going to be shown off.

However, I would not expect that hardware to have a marketable name yet, let alone being past the prototype phase.

Games I would like to see with VR:
- Xwing vs Tie Fighter Star Wars space simulator
- Gran Turismo 7 / Driveclub cocpit view
- World War 2 warplane simulator

nut sure about fps games but would also try tps with vr.

I really hope this actually gets revealed tonight and isn't just another massive hype train that goes nowhere.

This isn't a Nintendo Direct.

Just kidding of course.

I am extremely excited about this panel tonight. At best we will get the VR headset reveal with details about upcoming games and at worse...well there is no "worse". It's a panel with ysop, it's going to be great.

I don't think we'll get a new Move controller. I'm hoping for a updated Nav controller or a Move attachment specifically for VR.

Similar to these:

If they add the light ball thingy to the Nav controller, then I'd be all set. It would be perfect for Skyrim type games where you can use both hands as a weapon, or sword/shield combos.
