Today we added support for WebM files on 4chan’s image boards.

While WebM is technically a video file format, it offers many advantages over animated GIFs—namely superior image quality, support for more than 256 colors, and reduced file size. Its main disadvantage is browser compatibility, however 86% of 4chan’s visits come from browsers that include full or partial support for WebM, and plug-ins are available for those that don’t (like Internet Explorer and Safari).

We decided to disallow WebM files with sound for a few reasons, but mainly because it’s our intention to provide the site with better animated images, and not true video support. To that end, we only accept WebM files with one video stream and no audio streams, that are shorter than 120 seconds long, no larger than 2048x2048 pixels, and less than 3 MB in size.

We’re eager to see how 4chan’s users will adopt WebM, and have posted this short guide on encoding them to ease adoption. Many thanks to desuwa for both championing and implementing this feature.

Is it gif or jif? Who cares, it's dead anyways. For those interested in seeing the future of animated images, go to 4Chan and look for .webm threads. The technology is amazing. 720p animated images that run at 60fps, load in less than a second and take up a quarter of memory of GIFs.

Obviously some stuff is NSFW, so view at your own risk.

It would be cool to see GAF support this as well with the same no sound requirement. The new age gifs would be amazing.

So they skipped WebP and went right for WebM? That's interesting.

GAF doesn't host binary data aside from avatars, so you'd need to find a host that does and then ask Evi to show a video tag.

Having already converted and uploaded some stuff in one of the test threads on /g/, I can already say that the results are fantastic. This needs to happen for more sites.

Saw this earlier today, never heard of it before until this and damn, it's amazing.

I've seen 2/3 minute webm files in a really high resolution and they were 3mb..

30 seconds really high resolution/quality webms that are like 1.5mb,

Amazing, hope it replaces gif really soon. But I guess it will take some time.

Nose how to spell and rede to
So is it "Web M" or "webbm"

I like "webbm." Saying "Web M" isn't the same.

A 14 second 1280x720 video at under 2MB.... hellooooo

Always thought native video would replace gifs, but until we see looping by default it's not going to happen on some boards.

Looping is on by default for most people. But apparently for some people it doesn't work. I read 1 person saying it didn't loop on Firefox but I'm on Firefox and everything loops for me.

Damn, will these not work on mobile? On my 5s and nothing is coming up when I click on the links.

I have always been interested in .webm since it was announced, just didn't think it would get widespread adoption.

I hope this is the future, it loads so quickly, quality is fantastic too.

Edit: Doesn't loop in Firefox for me, but I can play it on my Galaxy S4 so yeah this shit is rad

it doesn't loop for me in firefox

the cat one does loop for me though. Might have to have it embedded in a webpage and not just by itself for it to work. Who knows.

NeoGAF really needs to adopt WebM/HTML5. It's something I've been pondering recently.

gyfcat.com does a great job of converting gifs to HTML5 videos with no audio.

Look at this GIF:

GIF Version: 4.5 MB
HTML 5 Version: 286 KB

GIFs are resource heavy and outdated.
