Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

at last, for christ's sake
Fake item box is just reskinned banana peel. It only ever fools people that are new to the game. It's useless and there's no point in bringing it back.

but what about the bastardness of laying one right on the item box line, overlapping a real one and tricking people into smashin on it? My damn favourite arsehole tactic in MK!

If you lay it right where a real item box spawns sometimes people don't notice it until it's too late. I've gotten people with it from time to time.
Sometimes I am consciously looking out for FIBs and will hit one anyway lol.

I don't think it's just a n00b obstakul -- if you're clever you can both exploit it, and later still be exploited by it.

Except its hitbox was far larger with a longer hit animation.
Personally, I'm going to miss the FIB very very much.

I had a discussion about this game with a friend last night, and his opinion about the overall look of the game is vastly different than what the general consensus is.

Basically, he feels like the game has lost its "mario world" feel and that the graphics took too much of an overhaul. He's comparing the look of the game to things like F-Zero and Need for Speed.

When I showed him the Moo Moo Meadows comparison video, he says Mario Kart 8 looks better but Mario Kart Wii still maintains the Mario feel while 8 does not. He would have preferred if Nintendo kept the "mario world" feel with updated rendering instead of updating the graphics to make it look more realistic.

Is he the only one that thinks this or do others agree with him?

Sooo...How does he feel about mario galaxy 1 and 2? This is more or less an evolution of those 2 and 3D world to me and I like it.

Hmm? 3D World is an evolution of the Galaxy games.

The difference in MK8 is the lighting effects. It is very different.

Hmm not sure how to word it correctly. More or less it's a great upgrade in terms of looks if that make sense lol.

For gods sakes. It looks like you will still only be able to select 1 item at a time when having custom items????!!!!

Seriously Nintendo, I just don't understand why you do this. I want to play without the blue shells and lightning. Not with only single freaking bananas or mushrooms!!!!!!

How hard is it to implement a system where you turn items on or off?

I thought they did this time??

Hey, mister, we do not know yet the details about item customization. You're overreacting over something totally unknown.

If you read the Ign article thats what it sounds like, they don't say you can choose to turn certain items off. THey said "Mk7 Customization plus a little bit more"

Damned if they do damned if they don't.

Hmm, while I think Mario Kart 8 looks phenomenal and wouldn't change a thing, I kind of see what he means. In the Moo Moo Meadows example, the MK Wii version looks more cartoony and the Wii U version goes a bit closer to realism (not a lot closer, but a little). But I personally love the evolution of the graphics from MKWii to MK8.

I was lurking the MKWF and I saw a few posts that made me think if they were possible:

Here's a pic with the cups and the tracks from the same video that revealed the possible 30 characters

But then, another user pointed out how close the cups were to each other leaving a lot of space for another two cups.

Would be cool if we end up with 40 tracks instead of 32. Mostly because I think they went too far with the N64 retro selection.

I don't remember exactly… don't non-unlocked cups always appear (greyed out) before you unlock them in all Mario Karts? It doesn't really make sense to have 4 visible unlockable cups plus 2 invisible unlockable cups, User Interface-wise.

Not always. Double Dash and Mario Kart Super circuit hid away the all cup tour and NES tracks respectively.

Don't squash our hopes and dreams!

They'll probably let you play without blue shells, and you'll beg to get them back after first place takes off within the first 30 seconds never to be touched again.

It'd be an amazing surprise if the game had 2 more cups, especially since they have revealed a lot of tracks already.

I don't see it happening though, but we can hope!

Off-Topic: I'm struggling to find a decent HDTV for myself, as the models that I want are not available, and I really don't want to limit myself to just using the gamepad while playing this game (which I have done for the bulk of my Wii U games).

On-Topic: I can't wait 'til May 30th for this game. Along with Bayonetta 2 & Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, this is one of my most anticipated games for the system.

Remember back before DLC existed and we simply begged for more content in the main game?
Well, in this case 32 tracks is the usual amount of content.

But, since it's currently the age of DLC, and Nintendo has already proven to approach post-release DLC intelligently, people are just putting it out there that, on top of an already content-packed game, they'll be willing to shell out for even more content to extend the game's life for years.

Not really sure why you are so content to let them get away without giving us a feature that should take 0 effort to implement. I guess you are fine with getting a gimped product.

Anyone here is going to Wondercon? It seems like it's starting in about 3 hours.

Will NoA bring the new demo (that the press played) or the E3 demo with outdated item mechanics?

What does anything you wrote have to do with my post extolling the virtues of the blue shell?

If you want to play without blue shells, I guess the option should be there for you. But there's lots of options that take near-zero effort also, and their non-inclusion doesn't make the game a "gimped product."
