Tales of Zestiria - Details on battle system (Graces-like), characters, and screens

I don't think there's a whole lot of pre-release info left at this point (some of the subsystems, probably two more party members, OP artist), so a September release might be possible.

You may be right.

I think we'll have a release date at the Tales of Festival in ten days (2014/05/31 - 2014/06/01).
And that means we may also get the preorder bonuses announcement at the same time.

It looks like it's going to be the same case as Xillia where important gameplay mechanics will be tied to pairing up.

Yeah, it reminded me of Xillia.

Although, in this game's case, the linking seems to be a bit more important due to these "contracts" which are directly mentioned in the game's story.

I'm hoping that these linked pairs aren't mandatory in battle, like in Xillia how you could link and unlink freely as you saw fit. Otherwise, it might interfere with multiplayer gameplay, which would be disappointing since I typically play these games with at least 2 other people.

I'm liking how colorful it's looking, can't wait for more news at the Tales of festival and hope they show 2 characters more.

The only thing they have to do is not make linking force AI control. If they do that again I'm going to rage. And it sounds like they might.

What I find interesting is that an element brought out from linking with a Tenzoku seems to affect the entire party in some way. Else, why are water and earth lit up for both pairs in that screenshot?

These new screens are looking amazing. Good to see they will improve on the pairing system of Xillia. I loved it.

Also, it seems like they are going for a similar font style from Xillia judging by the little of the UI we can see (the character portraits on battle). Obviously, considering they are not placeholder.

I am very excited even if I still have to play Xillia 2 on august and knowing that this will probably come out next year. There is so much still coming out for PS3 that I am looking forward to. This, Persona 5... Oh my.

Based on the story info and what we currently know about the battle system, the contract/fusion thing seems to be more about giving one character another's power than using team attacks and abilities. What that means from a gameplay perspective hasn't really been explained yet.

The footage so far also shows everyone doing their own thing, and they've gone back to giving each character their own meters for everything instead of shared ones like Vesperia/Graces/Xillia had, so for now multiplayer should be fine, but there's still time for them bring up something new that breaks it again lol.

The idea of "contracts" reminds me some of Tales of Eternia, where you could mix Craymels together to produce new spells.

I hope it's something like that.

I thought it was kind of confirmed there would be 8 playable characters. Wasn't stated that each of the designers would do 2 characters? Leaving us with 4 humans 4 invisible special people and 2 males and females in each group I assume.

Hearing the combat system is like Graces' makes me absolutely giddy. I would grind for hours and hours in that game because I love the combat so much. Definitely one of my favorite games in 25+ years of gaming. I can't put my finger on it, but Xillia's combat just didn't click quite as well for some reason.

I hope the team has more time with this game than they did with Xillia. That game just felt like something was missing. A lack of side content and just ultimately felt... small. Xilla 2 is the first tales game I can remember not really looking forward to.

It was never confirmed, but this should be the case.

They added a lot of side content in Xillia 2.

Best I could find (I added the last character image there lol):

Man, when you put the character's like that, it really shows the vast differences in style between the characters. Can really tell each designer did two characters.

For some reason, I bet Mikulio's name will be Michael or Mikhael or something different in the localization.

The battle cam we`ve seen so far bothers me a little... I don't know if it shows the target properly as our character tends to be in between. And it doesn't help knowing what's happening on the battlefield and to other teamates...

Are we sure the battle transitions aren't seamless? Because that uneven ground, and the fact that the battles don't seem to involve teleporting the characters to the one suitable battlefield in the each area, say otherwise.

There should be camera settings like in Graces and Xillia. Though I thought Xillia's was too close when I saw screens before playing it, and when I played it it was fine, so we have to see it motion.

I'm praying so hard for this to happen :(

Xillia 2 comes out August here and this should be coming out around the same time a month or few months later in Japan. Simultaneous release is very unlikely.

Yeah, but I got the same feeling from de 2nd PV. Hope we can tweak it to be further away and is viable for multiplayer.

The general agreement I've seen based on footage and a few developer statements/hints is that it's "half seamless", close but the game will still load characters, enemies, and objects in/out as you enter and exit battle instead of a completely seamless design with everything pretty much always present and ready.

The characters don't really carry around their weapons, even as we've gotten more characters they've still only shown Slay running around in "exploration mode" instead of a full party, and it sounds like you still get into battles the same way as previous Tales games. But it appears that when the game loads up "battle mode" it'll either create a battlefield where you are or some kind of close approximation.

New playable character? If so it confirms two designs for each artists. I hope thats the case. Excited to see more about the battle system anyway.

I've bought pretty much every Tales of... release since Symphonia, but I can't get into any of them. I beat Symphonia multiple times, but I barely scratch the surface of subsequent releases. I'm really hoping that Zestiria changes this trend for me, and so far it's looking pretty good. The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is definitely the world map - it looks like so much fun to explore. I want something along the lines of Ni no Kuni or Dragon Quest VIII where I can just get lost looking for treasure.

Am I the only one getting Mao vibes from Mikulio?

They're not the exact same, but Mikulio really just seems like a blue Mao. Replace fire with water and enthusiasm for coolness. They have the same haircut, both have an elemental focus, and they're both mages. It's not another Guy and Flynn scenario, but still.

I want this really bad but I just know I'll buy it days before they announce a PS4 port. lol

It definitely looks like a title that might finally get my friends into the Tales series and RPG's in general though.

That dude in the hat... haven't liked any of the designs so far, but he's my instant favorite. Gone from a little hesitant to probably day one.

The game has been described as a "commemorative title" for the 20th Anniversary of the Tales Franchise which would be 2015. It's also the first time a Tales title has been announced for both JP and NA at the same time according to all the postings I've found so far. I can't seem to find any notes on when Vesperia was announced for NA but that game came out in the same month for both the JP and NA versions.

If they didn't have any intentions of releasing both versions close to each other I don't think they would have announced both versions at the same time. They seem to be making more efforts towards placating over-seas fans so I'm hoping the release ends ups pretty close.
