More than 1200 posts in the tread???!!!!

Let me guess: console war talks everywhere.

Sony fans came in to downplay and troll and Xbox fans are in defending model.

Come on guys, nothing else to do? The World Cup had begun... And Heat will lose the NBA Final....

I suppose. PS3 was a bit tricky. I bought mine at launch and didn't even play a single game on it for 6 years. It was by far the cheapest blu-ray player at the time and a ton of videophiles got one.

True, that was a major selling point, and was also a reason that tipped me over the edge.
But all I'm saying its never that simple as multiplats run better on A or B so A or B will sell better. There are a shitton of factors, like the blu-ray drive for example :)

Yeah that's why I think they'll win in June - pent up demand. A certain amount was going to sell in May, but at least some of those purchases got delayed to June. That extra is going to put it ahead I think.

I doubt they'll win June. They don't have a big enough release in June. I think they have a good shot for Nov though.

PS4 doesn't have any big releases in June either.

No...but it has more and has the rep for having the best version of multiplats. The Xbox One has no exclusives to counter that in June. Plus evidence is pointing to Xbox One demand drop off from Gamespot, Amazon, and more. Looks like the bumped helped keep them competitive for a few days.

Well yeah, both the GameCube and OG Xbox played multiplatform games better than PS2, but it didn't matter. But really the super expensive PS3 was the only time the Playstation brand hasn't dominated a generation. (Consoles only. Handhelds are a lost cause for Sony.)

Interesting note, this is the first generation since gen 5 where the Sony console has superior multiplats.

Gen 6 - OG/GC were superior. Mainly OG
Gen 7 - 360 were superior, added effects, better frame-rates, etc.
Gen 8 - PS4 superior, added effects, better frame-rates, higher resolution, etc.

Why do people bring up the PS2? That massive headstart and built in community from a nearly 1 to 2 year head start (depending on your location) made a huge difference.

It's June. Nobody is buying consoles generally. MS will get a bump from the new cheaper SKU, plus pent up demand from May. They may 'win' June but both numbers are going to be low anyway and will note reflect general demand for either console.

That's what it seems like, surprise this thread has not been locked.

i might be crazy but i think Nintendo might win june. that Mario kart bundle seems to be sold out most stores at least in my area. its possible Nintendo shipped a small number of the bundle but employees made it sound like its selling really well.

Nah, man.
Would be nice for Nintendo, because they deserve it (Mario Kart, great announcements at E3), but PS4 will clearly win June NPD.

It didn't have a head start though against the first entry into that gen, the Dreamcast. The other two late comers were Nintendo hoping they wouldn't fumble on the hardware side and a cobbled together PC-ish console by a newcomer.

I really didn't care about the PS2 at all until I got a taste of GTA3 PC and wanted early access to VC so I bought one. I haven't been an avid Playstation gamer since PS1 till PS4.

Plus Gen 6 saw Microsoft as a late entry and Nintendo doing their usual and concentrating on a unique catalogue over the third party stuff.

For what its worth, I grabbed a 360 late on and started getting the multiplats on that. A visually better San Andreas (which also controlled like ass compared to the DS2) and Legacy Of Kain Defiance. And then I got Halo 2 and Live and never played anything else again. Ha.

That was one of two reasons for me, the other was video streaming. I was going through a metric shitload of burnt DVDs getting Lost/24/Heroes rips from the US, the money saved in media alone probably equalised the PS4. Plus I knew "a Final Fantasy" and "a Metal Gear" would turn up eventually, so got it for that. My goalposts have shifted somewhat of what I want a system for since those innocent days.

As a Sega fan you would have to be delusional to think Dreamcast had a chance after the PS2 unveil...

I dunno it's possible. I know my friend has been telling me that he can't find a Mario Kart Wii U bundle anywhere. Luckily I got my Wii U long ago.

They had a "chance" just as much as the GameCube had a chance. Dreamcast got screwed by getting 100% boycotted by EA. That's a ton of third party games they missed out on. They could have been ok if they weren't in horrible financial shape by then. Too bad. It really was an innovative system with online and progressive scan 480p on every game over VGA.

Getting a Blu-Ray player at $600 at that time was an incredible value, compared to what it would cost you otherwise. KK's incendiary commentary was a PR debacle, but the numbers didn't lie.

I said as earlier, but if it was truly a value to buyers (rather than a "value" as defined by the company selling it), why did that platform sell poorly compared to its other two competitors in gaming during the window of time that the price compared so favorably to standalone BR players?

The timeline of when it was introduced has everything to do with the situations. I remember when CD players were well over $1000. They were new, expensive, and barely supported in terms of available music. I think this is a reasonable parallel to early Bluray. If a game system had been introduced around that time with a CD drive as a major component of a $599 price tag, with all those still holding true, it wouldn't have been a value for gamers. There are reasonable parallels to how "integral" BR was for PS3 because we had a sister system without that technology that did very well despite it. The idea that because a very new piece of tech is priced high that it's the same thing as people having been willing to pay for it at that price on a mass scale comes off as ridiculous.

So finally hooked my system up and I'm off to a great start.
System froze during the initial update, so I had to reboot.
Fumbling around trying to adjust to where things are. Waiting an eternity for Ryse to install. I can't believe how slow this thing is compared to my PS4.
Might just give up and go to bed.

It's more than likely downloading the game updates on top of installing the game.

They probably won't win June and there's no way in hell they win the holidays. Why would they? Honestly.

The $450 Titanfall bundle was a better deal and they still lost. People don't want an Xbox. They want a PS4 because for most people it's a better value. As the PS2 to PS3 transition showed, brand loyalty means NOTHING here. The majority of people buy the product that offers more value for the money. That product is the PS4.

I just bought one. What am I?

Yup, I'm an xboner now. Decided to trade my spare PS3 and Vita off. Simply picked the bone up for the few exclusives I care about, ie Crackdown. So far the xbone controller sucks, the chat set is useable but that's about it, the interface is meh...not very impressed at all. I picked up TF and wow, nextgen its not. Worse graphics than Ghosts, stutter and screen tearing. Its fun but is quite literally COD with mechs. Nothing new to see here. KI seems ok, graphics aren't great. Its kind of on par with Injustice though a bit blockier I think. All told with trades the bone cost me $50 and I figure its at least a step above the PS3 for Bluray and Netflix. Almost got a WiiU but with Gamestop trade it was about even. All I have to say is that the PS4 will in no way shape or form be anything less than my main console this gen. What a switch, last gen the 360 was my main but its completely flipped this time.

This is how I see it as well. It will be close between the two with Xbox one winning. Also, I don't see them winning the holidays unless Sunset Overdrive is a smash hit.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Europe:

Amazon.co.uk
Titanfall bundle: #83 - £389
Kinecltless SKU: #303 - £349

Amazon.de
Titanfall bundle: #203 - 449€
Kinecltless SKU: #247 - 399€

If anyone still says the new SKU is a "price drop", think again. I call it the 'price drop SKU' anyway because we'll see £299/349€ soon, may it be official or not. I would like to say the new SKU is just to give gamers a choice, but it is a choice that makes no sense and comes at the high price of killing any chance of Kinect put to good use one day.

The worst is that we'll probably see the Kinect SKUs selling much more than the Kinectless but the message of Microsoft and others deserting Kinect has already been sent (not that there would ever have been something with mass appleal, but it might have had some nice "tech demos" appealing to a smaller target group like the Morpheus will).

I'm not yet convinced a standalone kinect SKU at $499 is going to be more appealing to the mass market than a standalone kinectless SKU at $399. MS's action of offering it unbundled clearly shows they believe there is a significant portion of potential customers interested in the kinectless SKU and very likely they have done focus testing on it.

Quite frankly I think the general consumer will be more attracted to the lower pricepoint than the addition of the kinect which has by all measures I've seen failed to demonstrate its value to these potential buyers. Alas the titanfall bundle still exists so the pure effect of unbundling the kinect won't be shown as there exists a kinect SKU with added value in the form of titanfall

My Wife bought me one just last week, with Kinect. Enjoying it a lot so far. I haven't been following this thread but I'm sure the price point appeals to a lot more people now. Have to say though, Kinect really makes this system stand apart. Voice commands and snap are awesome. Work a lot better than I thought, or from what I read from some reviews and some comments on gaf.

Have to say though, after getting the chance to play a demo of Sunset Overdrive at E3, that game alone makes it worth owning a Xbox One. I'm officially reformed. This new price point makes it even easier for people to jump in. Makes sense that they are flying off the store shelves.

I used to believe they do stuff like that but I really doubt it more and more every day.

Not sure about the US but in Europe we will not see a 499€ vs. 399€ situation ever again (street prices). 449€ or 479€ at amazon for Kinect SKUs and lots of bundles like the 444€ bundle including extra controller I saw at other retailers.

Hmm MS's vision is likely centered on the US and the UK so I'm curious to see what June NPD reveals if we do get splits although again I talk more of what will eventually be the two standard XB1 SKUs which will be kinect versus kinectless as right now the TF bundle will affect buyer's decisions,

That doesn't surprise me as it seems to have really stalled in Germany. I could even forsee retail issues in the region where retailers can't move through old kinect stock and thus MS is having to cut the price on those more than it would like to or risk retailer backlash. I have no idea how Europe would respond to a kinectless SKU over kinect as it doesn't seem to represent as much a difference in price as it does in the US

It only flew off the shelf for a day. Now it is back to what it was last month. It is in the 99th place.
http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=2b50,28-xu0

It is nothing to do with Kinect or $399 price. It is the $150 trade-in people got for 360. Once that was done, it was back to normal. I dont think MS is out of the woods yet.

So we can put the original "Flying off shelves" to rest now? At least as something that show a trend?!

I can't believe how people still doubt a real price drop is coming very soon.

WiiU is flying off the shelf though. It went from 130 to ~48 last week and still in the top 50. As of today WiiU/Zelda bundle is holding steady in the top 50. It is actually outselling PS4. !!!

I wouldn't try to draw too much insight from Gamestop's best sellers list considering we have no idea what time period it's over. From what I've seen of its behavior I would guess it's hourly at longest which is less than ideal. You have to try and continuously track the ordering to draw any real insight without knowing what time period it's measured over

This is great news, and believe me, nobody was more critical of Xbox under the Mattrick regime than me. I believe in Phil Spencer. I'm now a prospective Xbox One purchaser after cursing the brand's name all throughout 2013. It'll take another price drop or a really good exclusive, but I'm in.

Items dont move drastically up and down. Xbox one has been going down consistently down. You can check the list 3-4 times a day. Yesterday it started at 50 and kept going down. Tonight is about to fall out of top 100. It only stayed in the top 50 for 2 days.
