The game still looks great, but you can clearly see that the colors in the 2013 trailers were brighter and popped out, and everything was sharper. The E3 demo looked washed out. I hope it was just the stream, but if it is not, then they should fix it.

Considering also the dynamic wheater, to me they seem really really similar. I'd say..identical

Looked exactly the same to me.
I'm really not sure what people are seeing here.
Outside of better textures and slightly less pop in, it lools the same from the reveal.

hmm... you do have a point, I was comparing the demo to last year's E3 trailer. But, you are right, the current build looks like the original reveal.

I think the problem is that the 2013 E3 trailer featured a bunch of different landscapes and had the mechs too. So, in comparison, the limited demo we saw didn't have the same look.

Unfortunately what we've seen so far is dull-armoured characters and a misty landscape. Colours may pop later in the game. Imagine HD Satorl Marsh.

A typical anime episode costs around $100,000 per episode.

Breaking Bad's budget is reportedly $3,000,000 per ep.

Two entirely different formats with entirely different audiences and development time.

Regarding subtlety, yes, anime in general is very in your face compared to television live-action drama. But it's oversimplifying to characterise it as 'Western' vs 'Japanese'. If you look at a Japanese drama (Departures, Like Father Like Son) and compare it to a 'Western' drama the logic falls apart.

EDIT: sorry a bit over-zealous, changing my tone now!

You are right but I would also like to say that "in your face" isn't necessarily inferior to "subtle" and I didn't get that across in my previous post. It all depends on the context, personal taste and other variables.
I guess I should have replaced "Japanese stories" with anime because there is so much more than Anime in that category and even then it's not a completely viable generalization.

If you can't be bothered restarting the game, let's give Chugga some extra hits:

Already watched it :p

Everyone saying they are going to replay Xenoblade... urge rising. I'm not sure if I would finally do New Game Plus and just plow through the game for the story or if I would start a New Game for a bit more challenge. Not sure yet.

There's so many other games I should be playing.. ones that I have had on a backlog forever, but... Xenoblade is calling. D:

Imagine HD Satorl Marsh.

I want to go to there.

Also, the straight shorelines with sharp corners seem to be absent now.

Definitely downgraded

Anyone else rushing to play the first game, in preparation for this release?

I got to Sword Valley a couple weeks ago on a third playthrough, but now I have Summer School! I'm trying to do it all by memory. I even found some locations that I never went to before that weren't named areas or landmarks! (On a THIRD playthrough!)

Just bought and will be playing Xenoblade Chronicles finally!

I also watched a chunk of the X preview and LOVED it. Looks gorgeous and seems like it will be a ton of fun. This is the first game I will be preordering in a VERY long time.

Enjoy! Just take your time in learning the gameplay, and everything will really click very fast.

And explore! Exploring and discovering places is one of the main strengths of Xenoblade.

So, this has been asked a lot I'm sure, but do we know yet how connected this is the original Xenoblade story-wise? I never got a chance to play it and probably won't considering the price.

It's not basically. More of a spiritual successor, but the connection is pretty much distant if there ever was one. So you won't miss out on the story if you ever skip Xenoblade
although you will miss out on a great game :p

I did want to play the original, but I was out of the country when it was released and missed it, and now the prices are so high on it, I'm not sure if I'll be able to unless it gets a re-release. But cool, though, because I am definitely interested in this.

Yeah, pictures of the world and exploration have me really excited. I plan to just take my time with it and try and make the most of the game.

Hey All,

I'm afraid I am LTTP for the Xenoblade game. I own it on WII and haven't played it yet. Xenogears for ps1 was one of my favorite games, and I did give Xenosaga a chance as well.

My question is aside from being developed by some of the same people, does the Xenoblade story have any relations to the Xenogears/Saga Timeline?

Don't go into Xenoblade expecting something as story-heavy as Xenogears or saga. It's a deliberate break fom Takahashi's earlier games - more focus on gameplay, less focus on story. It's a pretty standard shonen-manga story for the most part (even though it kinda gets crazy by the end).

I think it's a moot point because when it comes to animated works (or illustration, or music, or literature, poetry etc) , mimicking real life is not the point.

Just like animation presents characters, settings and props in a new way (infinitely redefining how we perceive things visually), so too can the accompanying dialogue, voice work, music production and story also be presented in new ways, that are exotic and entirely unrelated the nature of our own world.

A pencil can only produce a line, but with that line you can construe anything you can imagine. The journey of any artist is to explore that concept to its fullest.

well not really...yet
I picked up a new copy at GameStop too and am replaying it on the wii u. I'm surprised how well it holds up on my 55" tv, then again the TVs upscaler is pretty damn good. Was expecting it to look unplayable. I'd previously played it on a CRT with the uk version.

I think if I ever replay Xenoblade I wont do any side quest or keep it too minimal, I was so overleveled the first time that the game had no challenge, that ocarina code or w'e helped a bit tho.

I didn't feel any incentive to do the side quests. I hope they're a bit better designed in Xenoblade X.

I was fine grinding.

Yeah, I was overleveled for like the first half of the game. I feel like once you get to Sword Valley, it sort of evens out though since there are a lot less sidequests in the last half of the game compared to the first.

I also hope they are better designed in X, but I wouldn't count on it. I'm still expecting the same MMO-ish sidequests if not just for the fact that there are those blue collectible orbs on the field. I'm expecting quests where you have to go collect 10 seeds or whatever. I always dislike those because what item you get is based on luck (although I think some areas have higher chance of giving certain items in the blue orbs).

I would honestly prefer 40~ or so detailed and well thought out questlines (side stories basically) rather than 400+ mostly boring ones. I felt like Bravely Default handled sidequests perfectly - they had their own interesting side story, new cutscenes, new bosses, great rewards, etc. Probably the best sidequests in any JRPG I've ever played actually. I wish X would adopt that approach, but I have my doubts.

Is it crazy to hope for some sort of future sale boost for X due to Chuggaa's LP? The timing couldn't have been better, but it's still a niche JRPG on the Wii U and all that. Certainly some nice publicity though.

yeah, probably. but I'm glad they didn't spoil too much at the Treehouse :p
technically, they even increase water texture and pop up

currently on my first play through and yeah... you are required to do one or the other (or both).

IMHO the side quests are fine.. but just fine. the most frustrating part is "Oh hi can you help me!?!?" You complete the quest. "Thanks for helping me!! But I think I still need more help." "Can you also do this for me?" and then repeat this sequence like 5-6 times per NPC. The running joke in MMORPGs is "I need you to kill 5 rats for me!" and Xenoblade takes this to an unfunny level.

With that being said, not all of them are like this. There are fun ones for unique monsters, visiting specific and unique locations to do simple things, etc. Like in Satorl Marsh the stuff with the igna stronghold (that was really the giant stronghold) is really well done. But then you have that dude who doesn't want to leave the cave and sends you back and forth like for 10 quests.. ugh.

tempted to write a FAQ basically curating the interesting side quests in the game with a name of the quest and an accept/skip verdict on it. so many worthless side quests.. but enough good ones that it would be a shame to ignore all of them.

replaying Xenoblade right now would boost my expectations of X too much

I am trying to decrease my expectations, because I loved the original game too much
at this point I expect backlash threads full of complaints from you guys at the launch of this game because expectations are so high

I want this game so bad but I got to remember it is not a Xenoblade HD remake

Right now it seems like the game is pretty much what would happen if you put Xenogears and Xenoblade in a blender.

I could see some Xenoblade fans thinking the end result is too different from Xenoblade and some Xenogears fans thinking it's still too similar to Xenoblade.

I do think a lot of people are missing a ton of the game from just skipping all the side quests. And you have to do a bunch of the ones that seem pointless to get your reputation high enough with the city/npcs to get to the better ones. Know I'm in the minority when I say I loved how many there were and enjoyed getting them all done. How just about every npc had a schedule and pastern for walking around and going to bed was great.

What's the Xenogears part, the gameplay or the story? I don't know much about Xenogears, but this game seems to have Xenoblade's battle system, but fleshed out even more, and even the mech combat is done the same way as Xenoblade's battle system, it seems. So its core battle system appears to be an improved version of Xenoblade's. Which is enough to excite me, no matter what else is different ;-)

The futuristic sci-fi setting, the art direction, the crazier plot, and the general tone of the game seem to be a bit more reminiscent of Gears/Saga than Xenoblade.

The gameplay is pure Xenoblade, though.

Might be LTTP, but am I the only one that thinks that the latest trailer is probably the worst one for the game so far? Instead of focusing on the game's strong points (the massive world/monsters) this one focuses on close ups on the horrible faces and cutscenes. Good thing they played the game on treehouse live.

It was definitely less exciting than the first two teasers, but considering how many people thought X was some kind of MMO-like or Monster Hunter-like game, they did need a story trailer to clear things up. If that was all we got it might have been a tad underwhelming, but we got over an hour of awesome gameplay footage from Treehouse, anyway.

Hence the "it's been downgraded" comments.

What's the source of this GIF? I've been looking for some not-shitty gameplay footage, all the treehouse stuff is really compressed and artifacted. This GIF looks super sharp tho.

woha, perfect. even the rock's textures are better

Jup. A shame you can see the rocks "pop-in" transform though. If they could get rid that (or make it less apparent) that would be great.
The water & shorelines got a noticeable upgrade too though.

I think it was as good as the other ones! That's because its purpose wasn't to present the battle system or the variety of places (city, outside world) you'd be exploring, but this one's purpose was to introduce some of the range of the game's story. So in that sense, each trailer stood on its own.

I'm not sure. It's either from the official Nintendo upload or the eshop footage. The eshop footage is definitely the best, but I'm not sure if it's been posted online anywhere.

Anyone with a Wii U should definitely watch the eshop footage, though. It's glorious.

I suppose I could understand why someone would be disappointed in the E3 trailer, but it excited me more than any previous trailer. Well, I take that back. The very first reveal excited me the most because of how well done the trailer was (it kept getting better and better - I was seriously freaking out by the end of it lol). But some people were a little concerned that the game wouldn't have much of a story based on the fact that they kept showing only the gameplay in trailers and footage. So I was actually thrilled to see a story trailer - it relieved some of my fears (although to be fair, I knew it would have a story - it's a fucking Takahashi game lol), and the story sounds really interesting so far.

The character designs don't bother me - they are similar to Xenosaga and I thought those were fine. It's not like Xenoblade had really great character designs either. Although to be honest, I do prefer how the characters in Xenoblade looked from a design standpoint (obviously, it has worse tech, especially Shulk's poor painted on face lol).

Hence the "it's been downgraded" comments.
Which is silly, since we haven't seen any faces since the first teaser and that face wasn't very impressive either

Well, anyways, it was good too see it wasn't an MMO. I liked Xenoblade's story mode quite a bit...still not a fan of Elena (or whatever her name is) and having a silent protagonist isn't very fun either. I hope that it's a bit like fire emblem awakening where you can make an avatar, but Chrome is still the main character and the story focuses mostly on him.
