Bungie Explains Why Destiny Is Not 60fps On The PS4 And Xbox One

Why would they do that if the design is only for console ?
They know the CPU is not top of the line on consoles, and they would build a game more dependable on it ? doesn't make sense.
Their vision of an open online shooter requires a lot of CPU grunt compared to a more closed design. If the game had the same scope as something like Halo's multiplayer then 60fps would be easier to achieve. I'm guessing that they had other design goals that they felt were more important than a 60fps frame rate.

Can you even play say... on your XBO against someone gaming on his PS4?, if so then i'd understand because 30 vs 60 fps wouldn't be fair, but if gamers on their console of choice are only able to battle guys within the same console bubble then... what gives?

Their backend supports cross platform stuff. It's up to MS and Sony to ever allow it to happen, though.

Isn't this game supposed to last for 10 years or something like that? PS360 won't even be relevant in 2 years so this game being cross-gen is short-sighted imo.

Destiny as a franchise is planned around 10 years, but not as Destiny 1. There's going to be Destiny 2, etc.

What's so funny about their response is the whole "I could get technical, but it would bore you to death" part...

Actually Bungie....NO...we WANT to know, it won't be boring at all..

Keep in mind it's an interview about the art of the game, not a technical interview. We (of course) want, and are doing our best, to make the game as good as it can be on every platform.

and of course no more follow up questions from another spineless "journalist"

I wish the press would just stop ballwashing these guys. I'd love it if every goddamn devleopers talking head was on his/her toes every time they had to talk about their games.

The funniest thing is that I am a journalist on a local level, and it is common knowledge to ask follow-up questions. You are taught it at the most basic level.

In any case, I think you're being a bit harsh on the interviewer, as are a lot of GAF. In general there is a lot of stick for journalists here and they aren't normally that bad. This interview in particular was pretty good, I thought. Now I understand the gripe about bias and all that, but there are some examples where I think it is a bit unfair how the journalists are responded to here.

Edit: Also, I think it is fair to point out that the majority of people don't care about the technical stuff, or wouldn't understand it. We have to keep in mind this interview wasn't done for the sake of GAF. It is important to note that if he had talked technical, then this interview would have been much longer and they do have times these are all allocated and all that.

Exactly! One of the reasons I have so much respect for Guerilla Games and Crytek is because they seem to love giving presentations about the nitty gritty details of how their game engines work...

Never, not once, not even for a second, did I philosophize over 60 fps over 30 fps during the Alpha.

It was a powerfully fun experience and I can't wait for the final release in September. In this case, 60 fps be damned :S

I mean.. I could understand if this shit was cross platform compatible... But gimping in the name of fairness is just messed up.

I'm going to buy this game all the same, especially after the high praise. It's still my most anticipated game of the year.

I've just lost a lot of respect for Bungie after this though. I really hope they realize many people feel wronged for this.

As if Bungie doesn't?

Bungie's SIGGRAPH 2013 presentation detailing Destiny's visual goals, major engine design choices, and various modifications to how particular effects were implemented compared with previous Bungie games.
(It also implies that the core material model and G-buffer format used in Destiny was heavily influenced by the 360's eDRAM size, so if anyone was looking for some actual juicy "cross-gen sucks" details to toss around, there you go.)

Bungie loves talking about their tech. They didn't during their time with Microsoft, but it's obvious why. Their GDC 2002 AI presentation was legendary, their GDC 2003 presentation included an implication that Microsoft was censoring them, and after leaving Microsoft they once again started talking tech.

Bungie have no obligation to understand people's negative feelings regarding their decision and change it up. If they (the consumers) don't like the fact Bungie is going 30 FPS, they can always vote with their wallet.

Gotta love these talks Bungie gives. They're always willing to explain things and really talk in depth about their tech. You don't find a lot of developers that do that.

ultimately I really do not have an issue with 30 vs. 60; but I would say that it would be great if Bungie did not have to expend significant resources on the last-gen versions (i.e., employ a company to work on that version while they optimized the current gen versions themselves). This seems to be a way to support both generations which many companies still feel is important while not detracting significantly from the current gen versions.

It's just 30fps, dude. And given Bungie's history, not all that surprising.

Has anyone from Bungie commented on the article or this thread? That article is not entirely clear (to me at least) and could stand some clarification or expansion from Bungie. As it stands now, I think it's being misinterpreted by many.

It would be nice if Destiny was 60fps, especially for the MP. But oh well, Bungie has always chosen to improve other things before increasing the framerate, and it's not like running at 30fps stopped the Halo games from being some of the best shooters of all time. Neither Destiny or Halo are super fast shooters, so 30fps, while not ideal (because 60fps is always better, even if the gameplay doesn't really need it) is fine in both cases.

Personally, I found Destiny's graphics to be very pretty, and while the cross-gen origins are still obvious, I don't really care, because everything just looks so beautiful. Those Bungie sky-boxes...

In the alpha the framerate was 30 fps locked, i didnt got slowdowns and it was ok in single player, in multiplayer they could do it 60 fps like shadowfall was.
Kinda excuses they are giving us, this cross gen stuff... >.>
This game could be Amazing if not for this cross gen >.>

Hi Oryx, if you're from Bungie and I hope you are, I'd like to let you know that your game looks amazing and I can't wait to play the retail version in September. :)

This thread is beginning to border on archive-worthy status with the shear number of overreactions to a single game being 30fps. I mean good lord.

You'd be naive to think Bungie would have went 60 FPS if they made it next-gen only.

Who really cares? Everything about it looks cracking, and for a sweeping expansive game like this I would rather have truly impressive high fidelity vistas than another frame rate erection comparison.

dat balance tho

Anyone who thinks frames per second don't matter in first person shooters hasn't ever played for money.

But I mean, what did you expect? You already left your real competitive play days when you bought a console.

Now all we can hope for is a nice quiet life of rocking chairs & 30 fps co-op with old PC vets.

What's that? It's time for a nap? What about my cocoa?!?

Bungie have a decade of experience when it comes to creating 30fps FPS console video games. There are about 1500 technical and design reasons why they'd stick to that for this game. At least on it's initial, cross-gen outing.

These developers need to do away with cross-gen permanently. Most cross-gen games sell more on PS4, Xbox One, & PC anyway.

Spoke to Jason about an hour ago while eating chips and salsa. If you read the full interview, and not just the pull quote, he makes it pretty clear that we are taking advantage of each platform's strengths.

That's been the plan from the beginning, and even as late as last week we announced that we were able to bump up the Xbox One resolution, a clear example of our team pushing to take advantage of the native and discrete resources available to us on each console.

Long story short, Destiny looks great, it's tons of fun, and the chips and salsa were a little salty.
Yeah, knowing that an equal gameplay experience on every platform is an obstacle to 60 FPS was a mild disappointment, but some of these reactions act as if it'll be a 720p (or lower) game that is exactly the same on every system, when that's not only clearly NOT the case but would be completely foolish to do. You'd think everyone forgot there was more to the visuals than FPS in here.

... Maybe, actually. I think there's no chance here though, this is more the domain of smaller developers revisiting a game after they gain experience on a platform and at the end of a generation, which happened with Atelier Rorona.

No. We'll get Destiny 2 on PS4 and Xbox One only in 3 years. In the next 1-2 years we'll get a major expansion/DLC for Destiny for all 4 platforms.
