First thing I did with every smash game was look online for a guide on how to unlock the hidden characters and stages, then I just bum rushed unlocking them. Yes even for smash bros 64 I was on my old dial up aol key wording smash bros 64 cheats to discover how to get everything

So, has it been confirmed that the game will have unlockable characters?
With Brawl, we only got confirmation of hidden content right before launch.

At this point, it looks like we'll get the entire roster (including hidden fighters) revealed before the game comes out similar to Mario Kart 8. I'd be pretty surprised if we got 4 Fire Emblem characters in the starting roster along with previous unlockable characters like Luigi, Toon Link, and Lucario.

Kid Icarus Uprising is a fairly recent Sakurai game and he basically kept most of the game's content a secret, only showing things from the Medusa stages before launch. I really don't think this will turn out to be like Mario Kart 8. Although 7 and 8 were kind of different in that we saw the entire content before launch, the Mario Kart team never seemed to complete exclude unlockable content from pre-release marketing, just sometimes didn't reveal all of it.

Regarding 4 Fire Emblem starters, Brawl did have Kirby jumping from 1 character to 3, and all of them were starters, with no unlockables left for the series. I could see a similar scenario here.

I'm an unlock kind of guy, especially if they tie it to something fun like SSE.

Mewtwo in Melee was pushing it...but I had four controllers pretty early on!

The thing is that the characters are the main attraction in fighting games, so locking them up infinitely sucks. Want to use the character you actually like? Fuck you use these you might not like and work for it.

On day 1, how do you know who you like if you haven't even tried everyone yet (fighting game-wise)? I get that if you really want to try out Mega Man and he's unlockable, that's a bummer, but still, it gives you something to go for, something to do, some goal in smash.

I like that part. Knowing who I want to try and having to work for and EARN that character. I like the feeling of earning and accomplishing something.

If it weren't for SSE I probably still wouldn't have unlocked all the characters in Brawl, lol. I just never played that game all that much by myself, and when I was playing with friends I'd be just as likely to be using someone else's Wii than my own.

I am probably going to be playing a lot more solo SSB4 than Brawl though, so I don't mind if there are many unlockables. I do enjoy unlocking characters.

^ I totally agreed. That's why it's so much fun for me to doing that.

These were exciting times;

I know the main fun in fighters is one on one (sometimes one on one on one on one....) but I get joy out of earning/unlocking all of the game, just like any other game out there. You don't get immediate access to the final boss in an adventure game. or the strongest weapons and characters in an RPG. You earn it.

So, remember those two rumors that came out last week saying Wario would be revealed by the end of this week? Well, we have two pics left.

I don't expect it to happen at all, but what will your reaction be if it does?

I live in a world where everyone wants everything right away. Where's the fun and enjoyment of discovering secrets, anymore...?

*sigh*

Must be getting old.

I live in a world where everyone has been conditioned by constant exposure to 'gamification' and skinner boxes to require an extrinsic reward to get the 'full' enjoyment out of anything anymore instead of just reaping the rewards of the intrinsic joy of playing the game for the sake of playing it.

~sigh~

Must be getting old :/

If Wario gets revealed this week (or any veteran reveal for that matter), I will be expecting a veteran reveal a week. Two newcomers and two veterans in one week? That can only mean the reveal train is in full swing.

I think you should went ahead and take it because he haven't post ever since July 2013.

Can anyone make an avatar for male Robin for me pls!
Like, just cut some art in an appropriate avatar size? Cause I can do that.

I'm not sure about that since I would imagine that we might only get like 3-4 more veterans before the game got released.

Wario, Metaknight, Ice Climbers and Ness

Just have the unlocks as per usual, but have a cheats menu where you can unlock everything at the start if you so choose.

Allow saves to be put on an SD card (i don't know if the Wii U does this), or allow an Amiibo to remember how many characters you unlocked.
Bam. No more issues when you go to play Smash at a friend's house.

Like give it a proper background in pixel (same colors as Robin's background on the site) I meant exactly same as those neorice's pixel avatars, can you do it?

.... wha?

You do realize that having everything unlocked from the get go in a fighting game is not the norm. Correct?

But Captain Falcon still hasn't gotten any love in the PotD!

I'm leaning towards Wario being revealed in a Smash Direct in the middle of August.

Another example that was probably overlooked showing decreased landing lag (and short times on buffered tilts) or Mario just being fucking godlike or something:

Some nice Town and City footage with audio.

That's true, but if we combine it with two weeks for the remaining newcomers, that would actually fit nicely for one character a week. Would be awesome if that pans out!

I should be able to. Let me go try really quick.

So, I just checked up on Blakimpaler. Blakimpaler has 120 posts only, and the last post that he/she made was in 7/25/13

I'm pretty sure you can go ahead and take the avatar.
Aww yeah Horizon wins by default. The best kind of win.

I'll change my avatar to that Lucina tomorrow-ish. I'm on my ipad and don't know how to resize it :/
Unless someone can help me with that.

You mean fighters, Not Nowadays it is.

At least the ones I play.

Off top, just this series alone maintains the practice. There are plenty more that still do this, even to this day. And we have what, 20+ years of that being the norm. I don't understand the argument with my statement..?

SF stopped doing it
Tekken stopped doing it
Mahvel did it for some reason, even though mahvel 2 didn't do , but fixed it in ultimate
I am pretty sure DOA doesn't do it
I have no idea about virtual fighter.. No one plays that
Skull girls doesn't do it
Im sure KOF doesn't do that anymore

Apparently we don't

Me too.

I really hope there are some true unlockables in this game, ones we don't know about ahead of time.

I can live without unlockable characters, but I do think they're more important in Smash than any other fighter, and I would prefer them to return.

As far as standard fighters go, I outgrew that shit a long time ago. Original SF4 made me realize this strongly. Unlocking certain characters like Seth was just stupid and tedious. But I love it in Smash for some reason.
