Does the Ukrainian military have the capability to shoot down a passenger aircraft? The plane had to be at full altitude when it happened (35k feet, give or take). From everything I read when the violence between Ukraine and Russia broke out, their military is aging and severely handicapped/underfunded. I thought it took fairly sophisticated anti-aircraft weaponry to actually hit a plane that high, else every plane in Afghanistan would be shot down.

A BUK will shot down any plane under 20KM with relative ease. Ukraine, Russia and potentially the rebels all have BUK systems. The rebels have stated that they captured Ukrainian systems a while ago, and people are saying that BUKs have been transported across from Russia.

Perhaps on a more cynical note, though, the strength of of more immediate political fallout from this might be dependent on the number of European passengers on board. (i.e. if there were a lot of EU folks on board, there would be probably more home pressure on the EU to do more about the Ukrainian situation).

I'd say it's NATO more than EU, but eitherway yes, I suspect that will make a difference.

Who exactly are the rebels? Russians or Ukrainians?

Remember when Russia annexed Crimea by sending in Russian military pretending to be Ukrainians? Same thing. Russia is trying to grab the land East of the Dnieper by destabilizing the region. They are supplying "rebels" with arms and money, and even personnel.

The kind of anti-aircraft missile capable of shooting down a high altitude aircraft is beyond what most "traditional" rebels you would know from other conflicts should have access to/training to operate.

Ukraine has informed Malaysia Airlines that they lost contact with MH15 soon after 2pm GMT. This indicates that the Ukraine were tracking and managing the flight during it's trip across their airspace.

A standard military have rules of engagement and I would hope this would indicate friend or foe identification. I would suspect that a rebel movement with equipment provided to them by another nation (ahem) would likely not use such procedures..

There is also a possibility that they simply stole BUK system in one of their raids on military bases around Donetsk. This SAM vehicle launcher family is in use from early 1980s and older versions were quite common in eastern armies (Belarus, Ukraine, Romania)

There's a new post on the page today referencing a AN-26.

Checking it now, it's gone. But I saw it there, it was the second post on the page about half an hour ago.

I don't know who maintains that site or where they get their info, or whatever. But for whatever it was worth, there was that post up until recently, dated today, talking about downing a A-26 and warning 'not to fly in our sky' etc.

Separatists typically don't have access to something like a Buk missile system.

If pro-Russian separatists did indeed take this plane down, then the equipment they were using was likely provided to them by Russia.

There was an insane build up of arms during the Cold War. Commercial airliners are easy targets. No counter measures. Fly slow and sorta low. A SAM from the 70s could take one out.
