LttP: Japanese 3DS LL

XL for you baka gaijins.

I've never bought the same system twice. Well, I guess GB and GB Pocket were the same, but I didn't have my GB at the time. I never bought the slim versions of PSX or PS2, never got the GB micro, and never got the DS Lite as I was content with my fat one (it was limited edition red!). However, my interest in getting a Japanese 3DS started when it was announced that Smash would come out in September 13th in Japan, but October 3rd in America. I AIN'T WAITING. I thought I might as well get a XL/LL to see how it compared to my "classic" 3DS. I got the Japan-exclusive mint color.

So fresh, so clean, so minty.

I've played the 3DS XL before, but only at kiosks where you couldn't lift the thing. Now that I finally got one in my hands, I was afraid that I would kill someone with the sheer girth of this thing. It's like I'm holding an encyclopedia with movie screens on the inside. The gargantuan size of this thing kind of kills the portability, but playing these games on such a big screen is exciting and easier on the eyes. I've also noticed I don't have stigmata-esque imprints on my hands when using this. Although it's much bigger than the 3DS, it is very comfortable to use and doesn't feel heavy while playing. I do wish the buttons and d-pad were bigger, especially the d-pad. I was also disappointed to learn the battery life is only marginally better.

When I opened up the e-Shop, it felt like I wandered into a parallel world. Sales that weren't in the American 3DS e-shop. Games that hadn't come out yet overseas. GAMES I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW EXISTED. It was very overwhelming. I definitely want to spend time and peruse what it has to offer.

Overall it is an interesting version of the 3DS, with some good and bad features. The larger screens will certainly be useful for upcoming games, especially Smash. But I have some questions. What are some Japanese games available on the eShop that you recommend? I'm specifically looking for games that are exclusive to Japan currently. I already have Yokai Watch 2. Also can I use the same credit card as my American 3DS or should I use a different card?

Yeah there are a bunch of Japanese exclusives, but what can you do? :<

I've had a Japanese 3DS since fall 2011 I think and my most recent purchase for it is the newest Taiko game for 3DS which still has not arrived for some reason, having shipped almost a month ago. :(

Oops you said LL, well nevermind lol.

I've been thinking of getting one myself eventually since I'm learning japanese (since I want to go into localization as a career) and it will certainly help.

If only there was a way to hack these 3DS or Vitas where it can auto-translate Japanese into English or any language of your choice.

That way I can play Monster Hunter 4 and God Eater 2 ;(

That wouldn't work.... even if there was, it would be a literal translation and that would be quite a direct, jumbled mess.

That's why I said if only there was a way...

I mean we have geniuses that can hack systems/handhelds into emulators or what not, there has to be some other genius out there that is willing to take up the task no? XD

That's a really nice looking 3DS.

I have a gold Pokemon XY one I played E.X. Troopers on which is a fun game. I've been playing Yokai Watch 2 as well. I want to get Monster Hunter 4 G but at the same time I don't want to burn out on it before my friends in the US get it.

I've used the same debit card I use for my American 3DS and it hasn't causes a problem.

Yeah... I got swung in myself:

JP Tomodachi Life
EU Luigi Anniversary
US No Frills Bluey

*shakes fist at Nintendo*

Your top JP eshop priority (as was mine) must be:

An absolute crime it still hasn't been released in other regions.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Man, why NA colors gotta be so boring. Japan always gets the cooler stuff.

I don't regret selling my EU model for an LL one bit. Nintendo made it real easy to go digital this time around. Coupled with the packed line up of new games each month, a good purchase.

Yeah, buying a Japanese 3DS to go along with my PAL one a couple of years back was definitely a great decision. Bought it initially for Senran Kagura and while there aren't that many JP exclusives, it's definitely nice to get access to a lot of games early. The eShop/VC are pretty much worth the price of entry alone.

Nice, living in Japan, mine is Japanese too. Played lots of Dragon Quest VII Bravely Default and Layton. Fun stuff.

More on Vita these days, but I have Fire Emblem to do.

Behold, the delicious Japan-exclusive mint(s).

I'd really rather have the cool Orange one some of you guys have.

So I guess this is the thread for complaining about the lack of furigana in Fire Emblem, huh?

Unlike the Playstation Store, I think you can actually use your foreign credid card to purchase things on a different region system on the eShop. Not 100% sure, though.

As for Japanese eShop games, I don't know since I mainly buy physical. I'm not sure if what your level of Japanese is but here are some great retail games I can recommend:

Easy (Don't even need to know Japanese Tier)
Mario Kart 7
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario 3D World
Kirby Triple Delux

You can pretty much play these with little to no knowledge of the language. All you have to do is chose a stage/character on the menu. Kirby has like two cutescenes worth of words.

Medium (Learning Tier)
Bravely Default: For the Sequel
Bravely FTS is actually very difficult, but is great because you can chose to play in JP voice/ENG subs, or vice versa.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link between Worlds
Very simple with the language used. It's not really required to know the language to advance if you get stuck either.
Luigi's Mansion 2
Has a fair bit of dialogue which is also relatively simple and easy to understand.
Youkai Watch-Youkai Watch 2 Honke/Ganso
Lots of dialogue that is once again very simple. Great to learn about some folklore too. Item descriptions can get a little tricky.
Pokemon X/Y
Simple dialogue once again and you can even play the game in English at the start if you want (cannot be changed unless you erase your save file)

Hard Tier (Advanced Tier)
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Lots of difficult words are used during the story campaign. No furigana.
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Since the dialogue in this game is mostly spoken while you are fighting, it can be really hard to concentrate and listen to what the characters are talking about as you fight.
Professor Layton Miracle Mask/Azran Legacy
Very specific. You cannot advance unless you solve the puzzles which can range from extremely easy to very difficult. Even more so when it isn't your first language.
Monster Hunter 3G/4/4G
So many descriptions >.>
Dragon Quest VII
Tonnes of variety as there are so many different things happening throughout this 100hour+ game. I found it ranged from extremely easy to hard as I played.

*cries* I want that mint/white model in the US so bad, I would rebuy a 3DS for the fourth time if it did.
Congrats on getting a new 3DS LL! I have a JP model also, and love it. I have it mostly for collector's purposes, but I have discovered some great new titles like Hatsune Miku and Youkai Watch. I never would have tried those games if it wasn't for my imported 3DSLL.
I want to try Puyo Puyo Tetris next, I'm not sure if knowledge of Japanese is really needed for that game. I'm pretty rusty.

Ok, first time adding a picture on GAF, hopefully it turns out ok!

I'm trying to hold out for the inevitable Smash 4 LL announcement. Once that happens, I intend to also go back and play all the Kunio-kun games that Arc and Aksys can't be bothered to localize!

This works, bought gundam tri age yesterday with my UK debit card.

Going to ditto Pokemon for the gamers who want to try their luck at a Japanese game while learning. The text is very simple and only uses complex kanji when there is not alternative. Great for putting together knowledge of katakana and hiragana in use.

Kaeru no tame ni kane wa naru (GB VC)
The RPG older brother of Link's Awakening. One of the best games I played on the system.

Joy Mecha Fight (FC VC)
I played this on Wii U actually but it is available on 3DS/Wii as well. Genius fighting game and late FC masterpiece.

Attack on Titan
It's pretty cool but not as amazing as the above games, and a full price title.

Most of the best titles for the system have been localized so there's not much left to recommend. You already have the sequel to YW, too. I guess DQVII if you haven't played the PS original.

Are you going to get Dragon Quest X when it comes out?

Also make sure to get the following:

Dragon Quest VII
Dragon Quest Monsters 3D: Terry's Wonderland
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 3D
Slime Mori Mori 3

RurouniZel

Asks questions so Ezalc doesn't have to
I love my 3DS LL. I got a boring White one but I bought a special case for it to spice it up. :)

Man, I've totally been considering picking one of these up eventually, if only for the DQ games and VC. (Heck, a part of me has considered a Japanese WiiU just for the VC, because I realized that would open up the ability to grab a TON of games that never came over here).

At least for now, though, I'm holding off to see if I'm going to end up back in Japan again any time soon (got my fingers crossed). IIRC from last time I went, it should be a good bit cheaper to pick one up over there than trying to import one while in America.

Totally jealous, though.

I still don't get why N isn't bringing more colors or LEs to the west. All things considered, North America is still a huge market. Are they afraid it might not do good? What are they waiting for?

That white 3DS LL... God, that would make me buy a 3rd 3DS.

Just look at this thing.

There are so many japanese games I'd like to try so I've been thinking of buying a 3DS LL... I'm still not sure though.

That orange one totally rocks.

How is this?

When you go to buy something it gives you 3 options, mastercard/jcb/visa?(cant remember). You then enter your card details and submit. Later on in the month you get an entry that shows up on your statement from Nintendo in your local currency. My bank charges £1.05 for the conversion. Way faster than the PSN method of buying prepaid cards and have to pay premium + waiting.

I meant the new Gundam lol!

Pick up 3D OutRun and 3D AfterBurner II. If you don't feel like waiting for the western release, you can get the Ace Attorney trilogy, which lets you switch between the Japanese version and the English localizations of the games. (And there's a physical version you can import if buying digital isn't your thing.)

Virtual Console support's fallen off a cliff in the last few months, but there's a few games that are worth getting, like the JP exclusive GBC version of Donkey Kong Land 3 and Balloon Trip, as well as stuff like Trip World.

I'm trying to hold out for the inevitable Smash 4 LL announcement. Once that happens, I intend to also go back and play all the Kunio-kun games that Arc and Aksys can't be bothered to localize!

There's a ton of 'em, and that's not even counting the VC legacy stuff.

Had this for a few years now. I've gotten too used to my plain white XL though and I've been eyeing an import LL unit. I quite like the white Monster Hunter and Tomodachi Life ones that've been posted.

That orange and black 3DS LL is official? It's gorgeous.

That SRW one is really cool too. That's the grid that the strategy part of the game takes place on, right? It's a fantastic idea, using the battlefield as a pattern for the design of the system. No units on it... just the setting. That's really cool.

Some nice photos in this thread.
