Groose has to be one of them. Hazarding a guess that Ashei gets the TP slot.

Wait, why are we talking Hyrule Warriors in Smash?

I dunno, lol.

I saw a post the other day that mentioned Yeta riding on Yeto. Really want that now.

lol. Somebody on the Japan Time Podcast said that the drummer from Van Helen followed him, and started tweeted to him that he's a huge Smash fan and started playing a ton of Project M.

zelda doesn't really have that many options for reps now that I think of it

you've got maybe tingle, some one-off villain, impa, or minda/one-off companion

and that basically leaves us just with impa really

Yeah, someone fairly credible said he had heard of talks, but apparently Sakurai wasn't that into the idea. Although Sakurai could've changed his mind I'm sure.

Is a person credible if they're just referred to as "someone" when trying to recall who they are? :p

We did have that Auto-Gyro dude on Gamefaqs, who seemed based on his post history to have some insight, mentioning that Nintendo getting the Ubisoft trademark just for a trophy was a jump. I'm not a copyright expert, but I do think he has a point...getting permission from a company just to use their character for a Trophy does seem like a waste.

Could Hyrule Warriors/Smash even legally reference the CD-I games if they wanted to?

I mean, does Phillip own the original characters, or does Nintendo?

People in the industry (here on GAF too, but I have a terrible name memory, so forgive me) have said that Ubisoft has been trying really hard to get Nintendo to include Rayman in Smash Bros. - I doubt that Nintendo paid any license fees or anything since Ubisoft was eager to have something in Smash.
Personally, I see that Rayman trophy as a sort of token of courtesy. Nintendo telling Ubisoft they have no problem with putting their stuff in Smash generally, but not this time for various reasons. Call it building a bridge and setting a precedent, or a bait for Ubisoft to cooperate more with Nintendo in the future. Smash is an enormous series, and Ubisoft knows that as much as the other 3rd parties do. If I had the opportunity, I'd try to get one of my properties into Smash for sure, and I wouldn't even charge any royalties for it.

Phillips owns the unique characters, including King Harkinian, Gwonam and all the minor ones such as Lupay. However, Nintendo also simply does not acknowledge the existence of those games, and as much as it saddens me, because I feel they don't deserve the shit they get, it's probably for the better.

The worst thing about My Little Pony crossover fanart is that it homogenizes all these great character designs from a variety of sources into a bunch of similar looking ponies illustrated in the exact same style where the main thing distinguishing them are their accessories. It's like the ultimate sterilization of creative design.

I would say its more like people drawing fan art on the internet. Maybe as an artist I should be more enraged at this, But I dunno I don't really care

shit comes up in class, I be like " its whatever man "

Pic of the Day: King Harkinian joins the battle! Getting this character was quite difficult...we had to sell Ridley to Phillips in exchange!

EDIT: Someone really needs to make a mock CD-I Metroid.

Ghirahim is the best choice.

And theres also Yuga

Yuga would be an alright choice. (ALBW spoilers)
He needs his hybrid Ganon form though.

Just an inferior knockoff to the true beauty.

zelda_gildedSword.gif

I don't know what that is.

As an expert on non-Ganon villains, I must disagree:

He's somewhat cool-looking.

So basically, Other M with worse animation.

Other M looks too drab for CD-i

Actually, wasn't King Harkinian from the cartoon/comic first? Lupay et. al're totally dead (His mouth thing was legit creepy, btw), but Harkinan's up in the air. He may be able to come back! Granted, he won't, but...

Also, really wish the CD-I games were on the Virtual Console... I doubt they ever will be available, but you never know!

Other licensed and semi-official products aren't really a good way to gauge a character's rights. :p
The King of Hyrule is a pretty ambiguous personality anyway. The first time they used him it was in the comics accompanying Zelda 2, which the cartoon/comic king is based off of, even though he wasn't actually in Zelda 2, and remained unnamed in the comic:

There's another unnamed king in the credits of ALttP. They outright named him only in the show/comics. I'm not even sure if the CD-i King has been confirmed to be named Harkinian.

The only official named King of Hyrule is the one in Wind Waker.

Yeah, that'll never happen lol.

As a diehard Metroid fan, I wouldn't even be mad.

So King Harkinian's Pyrosphere's stage hazard then?

this is silly

the original japanese uses the same phrasing for both brittany's and rayman's trophy (and i don't really feel i need to bother looking up the rest)

i'm not sure why people are so bent on believing sakurai is super cryptic when there's no precedent

the closest thing to sakurai ever making people believe a character has one role when they actually have another (over an extended period of time, so not counting ZSS or the pseudo-palutena trophy) would be toon link in the background, and this is hardly comparable

Assuming the guy did just misspeak, I find it hilarious that all this was made fom a simple wrong word choice.

There's no way it was a wrong word choice, Nintendo Canada employees are perfect snowflakes incapable of misspeaking.

Similarly, we need to read everything in to translated Miiverse messages from Sakurai, who is an evil genius the likes of which can only be compared to fictional characters.

I wasn't going to comment on all this Rayman nonsense, but to point out a flaw in that giant image posted above:

Yes, it says "Rayman's trophy," possessive, rather than "the Rayman trophy." However, it ALSO says Sakurai asked for reference drawings from Ubisoft TO MAKE THE TROPHY, and instead got a full render.

If the goal was to make a newcomer, all reference drawings would be for that. And then Sakurai and company would model the character themselves, for obvious reasons. And then they'd make the trophy based off of their own model. The fact he said they turned to Ubisoft in order TO MAKE THE TROPHY, and that Ubisoft then provided the 3D model, suggests Sakurai's team that makes characters never modeled Rayman for the purposes of being a character.

BAM!

Let's face it, those random demo people at Nintendo of Canada have no inside information. Why would they? Sakurai didn't just e-mail every PR person a roster and expect them to memorize it. They are the equivalent to an Apple Genius at the Apple Store.

Also I know SSB4 is a new game, but so many gameplay demos are near unwatchable because some people are so bad. USE THE POKEBALLS. USE YOUR FINAL SMASH. STOP FALLING OFF THE STAGE AT 14%.

If Rayman was a newcomer, I'm sure they'd save him for a surprise reveal and not a trophy POTD.

One day I'll make you like this game.

I don't know how, but I'll do it.

Wait 'til next summer.

Don't ask why. Just keep your eyes peeled and prepare your Fi defense essay.
