Polytron Hacked?

Does anyone know if there is going to be an actual criminal investigation into this?

If Fish files a complaint, there will be a record of an investigation somewhere, but who knows how thorough that will be. Valve's hacker only got caught because Valve did their own police work on it, and Valve is many times larger than Polytron.

Imagine you're a cop and you get this case. Your suspects are people on twitter and 4chan, there's no theft of assets, only a defaced webpage with personal data, a picture of the five guys logo, and a .zip file with a bunch of documents on "Fez" sales from "PlayStation+."

Not exactly bank robbery, shots fired.

The FBI would need to get involved and I don't know if they have the resources or inclination.

I assume that FISH won't file a complaint.

Also why is the news not on popular flash news yet? FOX or someone taking a dig at it.

Not very big news. He's a video game developer with a successful title. He's not a very prominent figure outside of gaming places and even on them his reach is quite small because not everyone cares about him or Fez enough to want to read about him. It would be like expecting to hear about J. Mascis getting his band's website DDOS'd on CNN.

All his corporate documents were leaked. Can he not file a complaint, legally? Doesn't he have to report something like this to someone? Insurance claims, legal actions, disclosure to future suitors (he may sell Polytron)? He can't just sweep this under the rug.

Honestly, this post is a far better reason to be ashamed of yourself.
Seriously. It's amazing how whiny, entitled and easily offended some folks are. "Hey, let's work towards more diversity" = STOP HATING ME BECAUSE I'M WHITE WAHHH!

How is saying that there was a lot of white men presenting and it was nice to have a little diversity derogatory in the least? I literally can't see how that could be offensive.
Because it's not.

He got hacked for being a feminist, not an asshole.
It's almost comical how all the assholes who say "oh Fish is dick, he had it coming blah blah blah" conveniently ignore this fact (not that it wouldn't be a terrible awful thing to say even that notwithstanding, mind you). The hacker's message blatantly said they would not stand for his "SJW" ways and that they would go after other "SJW devs". So even the hacker didn't attack Fish for his supposed dickish and abrasive twitter behaviour, but because he defended a woman from harassment.

I think thats kinda the problem. He stored all his corporate documents in a Dropbox, this might actually make him liable for charges against him.

I would love to just play games, but then I apparently have to first be ashamed of myself for playing a game with a straight white male protagonist, regardless of its non-effect on the game itself. Or be belittled by nearly every online video games website out there for simply existing as a straight white male who happens to also enjoy playing video games.

While I'm in agreement of diversity in video games from both audience to reporting to development (the "white dudebro marine" stereotype didn't come out of nowhere), I'm sick of "straight white male" basically being the lynchpin for any semi-moral crusade, that opinions coming from them should be silenced/omitted, and that any insults thrown their way should just be accepted because of "privilege" i.e. these people's carte blanche to be sexist and racist.

I for one haven't seen anyone complain about cultural erasure that exists from AC: Unity by removing all French accents and replacing them with British-accented voices.
Maybe them being white has something to do with it.

Sounds like you have it hard, wanna switch places? I can be the white straight guy since I don't care what video game websites say about me, and you can be the gay guy who goes through homophobia on a regular basis, deal?

I have read on another site that the passwords on the infamous 1.5GB file don't really work. I assume this has been debunked, but can someone provide me with some links on the subject?

Several ppl stated that passwords were real, I think Aquamarine tried one of the paypal passwords and worked.

Of course after 2 days, you should expect that none of them should work now.

Also I'd like to take a moment to apologize for the post I made earlier (wall of shame), it was pretty childish looking back.

He got hacked for being a feminist, not an asshole.

i disagree with that (paint it with a "in my opinion")

none of his tweets had any feminism on them. just hateful speech to a group of people he didnt specify, but in the broad aspect he was talking could be taken as GAMERS.

obviously he probably meant gamers who were raising a stink about zoe, a friend of his. but his tweets were highly toxic and gave anyone with a grudge good reason (read: excuse) to shadow his actions in the name of the nemesis of the situation.

I don't think is neither, he was attacked because he defended a girl (a friend of him) from personal attacks (that certainly dosn't mean he's a feminist), which was interpreted by a group of ppl as a "SJW" shit.

Probably his abrassive answers and opinions on certain mathers already added to become a target.

things like "you're all rapists" sure doesnt help. either way, i just wanted to mention that i didnt see any trace of feminism in phil's words. i just wanted to point out that probably someone held a grudge for a looong time and he simply saw the right moment to do it and be praised for it by a certain group of people

i'll say this again just to prevent misunderstandings: the hacking was cruel and a crime. not defending or excusing that. no matter how harsh phil can act on twitter changes it.

Why would anyone ever try one of those? If the FBI or another entity got involved; they are looking at them IP addresses.

Not sure Aqua did that (if not I'm sorry, never tried to assure you did), I'm probably mixing things from other sites.

But maybe is fine as long you don't do a transaction?

The shaming in this thread is ridiculous. The reason I enjoy GAF is because it usually seems respectful compared to other forums I visit.

I discussed this subject (the topic, not the shaming thing) very briefly with my programmer, and he knows the programmer on Fez (Renaud) and his wife on Facebook. The manner in which this event has shaken both of them is quite disheartening; we discuss Phil a lot here (to be expected) but I feel like we may overlook the others that this has affected.

An important thing that I've taken from this event though is to not store sensitive data on your Dropbox.

Yeah, rest of Polytron is affected as well.

Ok. So this is real bullshit. Internet you are fucking mean. And I feel awful about not being more careful with Polytron's data :(

I can only imagine how often you're shunned, degraded, and threatened, not just online but in daily life, by the people you work with, strangers you have to interact with, and perhaps even your own family—all for being a straight white male who plays video games.

is there an innate need to be condescending? shall we begin to make 1st-3rd world problems condescending comparisons too? i think it's pretty juvenile. if it's a problem he wasnt facing and he's now facing, why the need to be like that with a fellow poster that just expressed an opinion?

<when i was a kid, and many of you suffered from the same... liking videogames too much was kind of an outcast nature. now it aint like that anymore. no need to seclude others for the recently implanted thought, that i honestly never heard until a few months ago, of white privilege and all that stuff.

remember i come from a society that probably doesnt face the same patterns as yours too, so any lack of tact on the subject could be justified by real ignorance on the matter.

It's a tiresome opinion which is based on an inability to empathise with people facing genuine disadvantage.

This person obviously has no fucking clue what she's doing, if she is indeed responsible for the security and/or placement of the files. Why were there sensitive financial files stored in a dropbox?

I guess that's what happens when you don't have a proper IT guy?

i think there's plenty of people with disadvantages regardless of race or gender. like, for example, handicapped people (either mentally or physically, or both). and as I said, we can begin comparing ourselves to developing countries and we would all have to empathise.

empathy can be there and you can still wonder why the world thinks you lack it just because you fit a certain physical stereotype, right?

I see it differently. I was always surprised that no one seemed to think about the effect Fish's prima donna-esque decision to cancel Fez 2 had on his employees' livelihoods.

I think what's happening to Zoe Quinn is repulsive. What's happening to Phil Fish is wrong, but it's also a risk his employees should have considered when they decided to work for a lunatic.

I don't think the poster complaining about how hard it is being a straight white male lacks empathy by virtue of him being a straight white male, I think he lacks empathy because he made a series of stupid posts in this thread which demonstrated a complete lack of empathy.

sorry then, i just read that one. if it's a repeated offense i can understand why people are concerned about his attitude

the hackers literally said he was targeted for being a SJW

bullshit

its not bullshit. find me a record of the tweets, i swear he was pretty agressive, but nothing came out as feminist. defending a girl who happens to be a feminist doesnt make him a feminist, or being one at that pointsince that's what you're saying.

the hackers can say whatever they want. you're believing the words of deceitful people as gospel? it just shadows perfectly their intentions to harm phil fish and seems somehow "fair" in the eyes of an angry mob.

This has nothing to do with Dropbox. Storing sensitive files on Dropbox isn't inherently insecure. Dropbox supports two factor auth. Any company storing anything in a 3rd party's product should be using some sort of two-factor auth. That goes for social media accounts as well.

That said, your post is victim blaming pretty hard. Not everyone is very technical/security conscious. It sucks that they hard to learn this the hardest way possible.

If someone has the archives of Phil's tweets since this whole ugly business started, I'll try to find it.

Phil Fish and Renaud are the victims, I'm not blaming them. But whoever placed that stuff online and kept it there for absolutely no reason certainly shares in the responsibility.

So can someone tldr me the whole thing?

I'll try, without getting banned.

A couple days ago some private information was released about a game developer, Zoe Quinn. I suggest you Google it since it does play a small role in what later happened.

Phil Fish, whom is a friend (acquaintance?) of Zoe, took to twitter to defend* Zoe.

*Unfortunately, many of Phil's tweets have been deleted so it's hard to tell what really happened.

Ultimately though, this angered some people enough (allegedly /v/ from 4 chan, but the evidence is controversial) to hack Polytron's (Phil's company) Website and Twitter, while releasing private information (passwords, financial stuff, some Fez files, among other things) that had been poorly protected.

The site and twitter seem to be back, but Phil plans on selling the company and rights to FEZ 2.

Also, some people believe that the hack was allegedly done by Fish himself, but the evidence is still scarce.

Because feminism and reasonable don't go together, is that it?

It can, obviously, but I don't feel it is in that particular case.

I'm not sure if you meant it this way, but it sounds like you define feminist as having unreasonable opinions.

No, I think that saying defending a woman from slut shaming is not really feminism, at least I don't consider that makes you necesarely a feminist....

Companies shouldn't be storing any data on a 3rd party storage which is always available online in* the first place, that's always bound to have security problems.

Keep it accessible only inside the companies network <- or -> keep it in company lockers/storage by having the data printed on real paper, that's the way to go.

i know there have been some unfortunate opinions that warrant that kind of scrutiny, but I think this isnt one of them. come on, the slut shaming stuff is not feminism, it's mainly common sense. how was he promoting equality regarding genders with those words exactly?

4chan and Reddit would be fine if the hackers said they hacked him because he is an asshole. If the hackers did just do it because he's an asshole, I can't think of any incentive to lie about it.

The fact is he vehemently defended Zoe Quinn, he has a history of saying stuff like "If you aren't a feminist then you're a bigot", a lot of people listen to him, and it made him a target.

That person they were quoting is Renaud's wife, who from her Twitter bio it looks like also works with them.
