Digital Foundry: Hands-on with DriveClub (second tech preview)

Good to see it's holding up well and also playing well from what I've read about it.

I'm really hoping that this generation will allow us to start moving away from "graphics as decoration" to "graphics as content". As much as some people complain about it what is shown on the screen is the primary way the game communicates with us and they can be far more important than just looking pretty.

In DriveClub the visuals are a big part of what keeps you in the environments when you're playing. The feeling of an environment being a solid, physical place where everything in it is connected physically brings far more to the experience than just attractiveness.

We're a long way from being 100% but for me at least the sense of place in DriveClub is unmatched so far.

I for one really can't wait for the game and the weather update really can't come soon enough.

Why am I looking at 1280x720 screenshots in a Digital Foundry thread?

Here's some 1080p one's from Gamersyde (also grabs from video).

Couldn't have said it any better.
The extremely detailed environments contribute so much to the sense of speed. This gets overlooked very often. Without objects and scenery moving past you, how would you even be able to tell you are moving.
It also doesn't hurt that the lighting looks nearly photorealistic giving you the feeling of driving in a real world, instead of a course in a video game.
Gorgeous stuff!

What is going on there? I mean, I hate to be Mr. Nitpick, but you'd think with the gravitas of Digital Foundry, they'd have the decency to at least show native res screenshots for their analysis. .

And a video that isn't a grab from a conference.

...or you know, don't write the article at all until they have a build of the game from which they can actually grab video running in real time and measure the actual frame rate.

I guess it's Saturday...

I'd agree with this. I forst noticed it in the Canada video they released a few months back. The mountains felt huge, instead of them just looking huge...it's hard to describe, and I have no idea how they've pulled it off, but you're right, the sense of scale is just spot-on. The environments are very realistic not just in how they look, but in how they feel, it looks like the car is actually racing in a part of the world....instead of just on a track with some pretty environments. Nothing looks artificial or flat.

A really good job from Evo. They should be proud.

Great read. While playing you definitely get a sense of all the attention Evo's given to everything. Not just visually, but pretty much every aspect of the game.

30 days wait now feels like forever but also I can't believe we get to play this soon! Damn, this has been a long hype cycle, and from impressions so far it seems like it's delivering.

When they go for 60 fps (would should be obvious) and also with all the Sim-Tech in the Background => they probably won´t ;-)

We'll probably find out some time next year how true that is (unless we get a surprised at TGS). But they've done a good job of dealing with 60fps vs. 30fps since the PS2. Plus they'll have at least an additional year of development as well as the benefit of having some tech prebuilt for the PS4. They're one studio that you probably shouldn't bet against.

If I ever get a PS4 I am so getting this game.

PGR gameplay + such graphics = All over my face, please.

I really don't mind 30fps in Arcade racers, in fact I am getting F.Horizon2 and I will play the hell out of that game.

Looks awesome? is this game more arcade-y like NFS or is it more like GT/Forza? im in the market for both, so if the game is good ill be picking it up either way.

Out of interest...

And I probably know the answer to this and sound thick...

But should devs get a bit more au fait with this multi-threading GPGPU malarkey, could it be patched into the game to increase the resolution should it create enough overhead..?

I'm not techy minded and not sure just how ingrained into the engine this all is.

However great their game looks, I don't find their AA solution very convincing. Still lost of geometry and subpixel aliasing.
Dithered motion blur doesn't do the IQ any favors either.
Though I still hold my opinion on how it will look in motion in the final product.

More like PGR to be quite honest NFS outside of a few games really doesn't require much skill at all.

Looks amazing but i still don't get why they decided to sacrifice the 60 fps and go for the photorealism, his direct competition (Project Cars) looks almost as good as Driveclub and it's not a fucking slideshow.

Not even close.

Project Car's environments don't come anywhere close to DC's.

They are seriously raising the graphics bar. Polyphony will have a hard time to catch up with these guys.

GT7 will be 60fps, this game is not. And surely the driving physics in GT7 will use more processing power than a arcadey racing game? DC looks nice though, wish it had city tracks.

and drviveclub can't be played at 60fps. Both games have plenty of tradeoffs and considering I'm usually more focused on my lines than the environment in racing game it's not all that big of a deal.

We all have different preferences and wants.

Also comparing sims to arcade is dumb physics especially precise and complex ones easily push a system as much as eyecandy.

Played it at gamescom and I have mixed feelings about the graphics. In some scenes it looks gorgeous, but in others (beginning of the snow track f.e.) it only looks average.

It has always been a 30 fps game. They were pressured into aiming for 60 fps last year, but nothing came of it and there's been no 60 fps footage. Also, Project Cars (on console) does not look as good as DriveClub, it's not even close.

Well said.
I love that the extra time and their dedication to accuracy and dynamism seems to have paid big-time dividends.

The best graphics ever imo. In fact if this was 60fps, i'd say its graphics wouldn't be beat this generation except by DriveClub 2 or a new Motorstorm.

Seeing the game like it is now makes you so glad they delayed it as i thought the game looked quite poor last year.
