That number is huge. Off topic I won't get my copy until Friday
Shit! I wanted this game to fail hard, for publishers this means we want more and more shooters and im sick of shooters
Well, yeah. Its not like this decision was unfounded, interest was gauged and calculated.
This is not sold to consumers right?
Its also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history.
This helps...from Amazon.
Whose gaf? Never seen him post here before.GAF doesn't like the game? How shocking. I think its great.
Its more like Gaffers read the title and then skip the OP, and then continue to make a moot point based on their own misinformation.
The actual report isn't bad at all, it teeters on useless info though. Essentially this report only shows how confident Activision is for this product.
What launch are you talking about? Activision shipped 500 million dollars worth of Destiny to stores, EA/Microsoft could've done the same exact thing with Titanfall.
From the PR in the OP:I wonder if they're counting $400 of shipped Destiny for each PS4 bundle... that would be hilarious.
Activision is counting the revenue from the copy of Destiny bundled with hardware. (The PS4 bundle, obviously.)the company sold more than $500 million of Destiny into retail stores and first parties worldwide
No, it shows how confident retailers are for this product, because they bought them.
No, they couldn't have. Retailers order product. You don't just get to ship as many as you want to them.
The important thing to distinguish here though, this is only the first shipment of the game right? How often do first shipments of AAA blockbusters last?
Napkin says over 10 million. Hard to estimate unit revenue for bundle copies but I assume it should be significantly below regular retail orders.Do we have any idea how many units is that?
Will be interesting to see which platform gets the bigger lift. The PS4 had the bundle, the marketing/content exclusives and the ongoing platform sales momentum behind it. The XBO has the benefit of a lot of Halo fans that haven't gone next gen yet, who want to keep playing Halo and thus were going to buy an XBO, but want to play Bungie's next. And then MS going all in with bundles and discounts around the Destiny release.
I see the PS4 as getting the larger uplift (for the above reasons and things like Amazon's lists), but the XBO will undoubtedly move hardware due to Destiny's release as well.
Yet more proof that marketing matters more than the quality of your product.

Are you not sick of shooters? I would like more variety in gaming, shooters must take like 30% of type of games that are produced, thats why indies are on the rise, cause AAA games are mostly shooters and indies not.
You make it sound like there aren't negotiations or long term contracts. Of course retailers have to buy the copies and stock them, but Activision and retailers agreed to a certain amount. Its not like Activision would be powerless when it comes to negotiating.

Hey I'd like to point out that McDonalds is deliciousMcDonald's serves bad food and makes a lot of money.
Destiny is a great game and has made a lot of money.
Why are you so salty? Why did you come to this thread? Haha, you people are hilarious.
I don't see how that's relevant.Lots of people are enjoying Destiny.
You don't think this has anything to do with the very large alpha and beta tests where a bunch of people sampled the product and liked its quality?
There were 210 titles released on discs for Console and Handheld platforms in the 12 months ending May 2014.
13 of those 210 were first person shooters. That's 6%.
On Sony and Microsoft consoles, 12 first person shooters released out of 138 total releases. That's 9%.
You're spouting nonsense.
Oh, absolutely, but in a way, alpha and beta tests are marketing too, no?
So how long until Destiny becomes a franchise with annual installments?
Oh, absolutely, but in a way, alpha and beta tests are marketing too, no?
Thats sold-in, not sold.....
fuck yeah, huge publishers making boatloads of cash off a product that nobody really knows anything about because they kept reviewers in the dark!!!!!!!
threefive cheers for AAA gaming!!!!!!!
i can't wait for all the expansions i've already paid $35 for!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't like Kotick. I haven't bought an Activision game in years, and have no plans to change that, but calling Kotick a broken clock is laughable. He's far and away the most successful executive in video games.
Destiny, COD machine, skylanders machine. Yeah such a broken clock lmao
Sure, but since my completely 100% objective opinion is that the game itself is not that great, the massive sales figures must obviously be the result of marketing.Sure, I just think it's hard to dissect how much success came from each source with any degree of precision.
Incredible just incredible. Playing the Alpha l don't know how they managed it.
Why cant sports games do this? That said, one of Activision's potential roadmaps for the franchise was to have four games over eight years, with each game getting a large expansion pack about a year after release.

GAF doesn't like the game? How shocking. I think its great.
How long have you played it though? The game has a bad case of Assassin's Creed face where it's legitimately a fun game with beautiful art...until you play it for a while and realize it's also doing the same stuff over and over and over. Hopefully, Destiny 2 is the giant leap forward that AC2 was.
Poster's note: I still like the game and am still playing it but not sure for how long
Of course it matters. There's a reason why companies play like to play with those words. That doesn't matter.
This is the money that Activision brought in. That is the one that matters, not the sell thru that Gamestop does.
