New details on The Evil Within from Game Informer

Being a survival horror game i was already on board and with everything i read about the game i`m getting more and more excited for this game.

I just preordered on PSN for the reduced price. They saved me roughly $6.

33 Days 5 hours 35 minutes

Preload begins on the 12th. I got The Fighting Chance Pack as a bonus. I already have the Season Pass too.

Don't forget it's an ID tech 5 game, so probably 40+ GB. :/
I'm not going to preorder it via PSN.

This has my attention now. I've been a bit cautious of this game since the bad press it receive earlier this year but it seems the previews were just poorly handled and the demo feedback has been pretty positive.

Knowing the team behind this and the games they've worked on before, coupled with all that info and recent glowing feedback from hands on demos has really put this back on the map and in glad I preordered it when it was cheap on Amazon recently.

Can't wait for a true AAA survival horror game. Been way too long.

Somehow I never connected that this is Mikami's title, and thus paid no attention to it.

HOLY CRAZYBALLS.

Should I go out and buy a PS4 TODAY in preparation?

Are you guys mainly interested in this for the story? I'm mostly here for the gameplay, story is secondary for me.

Story in a Mikami game?

No its all about the gameplay, pacing, encounters and replay ability that are Mikami's strong suite.

I agree, I posted that because a couple people seemed disappointed that the story might end up being cliche.

As long as the story is engaging and the background for the monstrocities are there Ill be happy. The gameplay and replayability is key along with pacing and atmosphere.

-Mikami says to strike the right balance of challenging and fun, they replayed each section of the game over and over, for a horror game you can't determine this by numbers or equations, you have to judge the experience. They replayed each part the game so many times to make sure it was fun and challenging, Mikami doesn't even want to count.

Obsessive fine tuning and playtesting. Sounds like Mikami when he was developing RE4 and had a stupidly big budget.

Can't wait for October.

Plot twist: Sebastian
is the crazy one and all the "monsters" are just ordinary people running away from him and he's just imagining they're after him but he's the one chasing them and killing innocent people.

I remember some people speculated that this would be the plot twist in DmC with Dante.
Would've been a lot more interesting than what actually happened.

Resident Evil 4 is so overrated to the point where I'm legitimately concerned it's reverance throughout the community will sour opinions on Evil Within.

I couldn't disagree more. Playing the new PC version is only moving the game further up the ranks in my favorite games of all time. And it was already firmly in the Top 10 since 2005.

I always thought it was strange that, in the midst of all these PC indie horror games springing up, it seems as if nobody has tried to emulate the gameplay style of the original Resident Evil games. There's a vocal and enthusiastic audience for them still. But the sheer amount of time, manpower and expertise you'd need to properly balance ammo and health in order to create a real survival horror experience isn't something to take lightly.

It's a far cry from dropping the player into a room with slenderman and expecting them to die cheap deaths over and over until they get through. And to me, the looming threat of ammo/health conservation was always far more engrossing an experience than 'jumpscare, loludied'. But the kind of game I want is just not reasonable for a small studio with limited time and resources, so it falls on Mikami and his team to save us.

Anyways, this subject makes me wonder about this question from the interview:

In some sections in the game, the best course of action is to run, but the game doesn’t tell the player this outright. How do you lead them down the path of fleeing rather than fighting?

Will enemies like arm lady and safe head be invincible, or will it be like Verdugo where you can take them out if you're willing to spend enough of your ammo? I know I never killed it on my first time through RE4, I didn't have the rocket launcher and my guns simply couldn't do the job. But I damn well tried.

Had a good time with it ad SDCC but was concerned about a few things, but trying very hard not to get tempted by a pre-order. I've got high hopes.

Game reminds me somewhat of Shadows of the Damned without all the Suda craziness, Mikami had a part in that as well.

Makes me feel like playing REmake but I kinda want to hold off for REremake next year.

Doing the same, had already started a new playthrough but stopped as soon as the remaster was announced.

A couple people have said that in the past, I've played SotD but I never once thought about it while watching footage of this. I know the word gets thrown around a lot and doesn't even really have an actual meaning but "janky" is how i'd describe SotD. I enjoyed it for what it was though.

Mikami directing is very different than Mikami producing.

I dunno, it's a good game but I don't think it's really a good Resident Evil game. The story is generic as fuck, the setting is boring and the locales, especially in the last act, are just lowest common denominator.

I felt like Africa had a much better character and aesthetic to it, while being physically tied to previous Resident Evil lore.

I'm not saying Resident Evil 4 is a bad game. I'm saying it's overrated. It is good, if not fantastic, but the way people put it up on a pedestal is questionable sometimes. As I said, I think it ruins people's opinions of other games that cast themselves in a similar light.

I mean people said Wesker and Excella were goofy in Resident Evil 5 but then they're completely avoiding the scenario in Resident Evil 4 where you outrun a mechanical stone statue of a midget castellan, who is a major villain for about one third of the game. Resident Evil 6, while flawed in a lot of ways, has a much more fluid control system akin to action games like Vanquish but simply needed more time in the oven.

I'm not sure what my beef is, but the more and more I defend my opinion I'm beginning to think it might just be beef against the immeasurable double standard people hold between Resident Evil 4 and other post-Resident Evil games rather than the game itself. But then again, that's what I mean by overrated.

I remember how many people were expecting Shadows of the Damned to be like a spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4 because of Mikami's involvement, and in the end it just soured their opinions on the game since it was more or less a more (and uncharacteristically) functionally accessible Grasshopper Manufacture game.

I''m rambling, I'll stop.

You get an opportunity to kill them both at certain points, but iirc you can't kill Laura (Spider ju-on) until then and The Keeper will revive when you kill him (behind your character) before you get the chance to permanently put him down

Edit: ^Nemesis, the difference IMO to the goofiness in RE4 and RE5 is that it was obviously intentional and part of the charm in RE4, while RE5 it seemed to be unintentional in a game that seemed to take itself seriously. I also feel the pacing, atmosphere, and general scenarios in 4 surpassed those in 5 which seemed more interested in hamfisting what 4 did to a rather disappointing tie up to the plots of REmake+CV. 6 was just a mess that was notable for the combat system and mercenaries, both to me personally are accessories to Resident Evil. I've grown on the last two, but they'll never touch REmake and RE4, and I don't begrudge others for disagreeing.

You know this is a legit concern. If I had thought about it I probably wouldn't buy it digital, but I already pre ordered...

Guess I'll have to delete some things from my HDD... :-(

(I know even retail games need to be installed).

Yes.
This game is the main reason I bought a PS4 a few weeks ago. It's still in my wardrobe in the box just waiting for the game to come out....

No way am I gonna settle for the PS3 version. I gotta get the best possible version and I'm fairly confident that'll end up being the PS4 version.

This has got to be the silliest argument that I see on message boards.

Okay!

Anyway, it doesn't look like Australia will be getting the game earlier. 16th October for us, by the looks of things.

Hopefully Bethesda Australia will bring it forward

Looks like a third rate Last Of Us , I'd say second rate but honor belongs to the grossly overrated resident evil 4. Mikami has only made one good game and that is vanquish. God Hand was average but nothing more due to it's shit camera controls. Dude is literally the Ridely Scott of the video game industry, made some interesting stuff so everybody excuses his crap and keep giving his washed up ass chances he doesn't deserve. Guy has interesting ideas but doesn't know how to execute on them. Naughty Dog and Epic took his poorly executed ideas from res 4 and showed him how much better they are with games like last of us and gears of war. I hope this game flops and end his career. Of course jpn fanboys and weebos will lap it up though because well it's made by a jpn guy even though it looks generic as fuck. It's funny how the same people who criticize The Last of Us for it's story focus and interesting shooting mechanics are very excited about a game with shooting mechanics that are essentially from his 10 yr old game but now you have more movement.
Hopefully critics will tear this piece of shit up like it rightfully deserves.

Your criticism is quite unfair to the title. The game's defining aspect has been two things: Agency and level design.

Point being, it set up to not only redesign approach to gameplay design but also how the player perceives themselves the environment. To call it overrated when it single-handedly defined 3rd person camera perspective without being a total gimmick is a real oversight. Games biggest obstacle has always been defining the interactive experience and Biohazard 4 is a landmark throughout the generation. The fact that it's sequel merely took it's base formula highlights the significance of this title.

He is. Look at his short but awful post history

Awful opinions.

Lol check out this gem.

i got a little ways past unlocking travel bonfire ability and got bored and annoyed by everything other than the combat. specifically the sexist depiction of the woman with very large breasts was off putting. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since most jpn devs are perverts. anyways i don't want to derail this thread any further. you dark souls fans shouldn't be so insecure somebody doesn't like your favorite game.

If this game turns out to be amazing Bethesda can positively be called out for the worst marketing of a game ever.

Aren't half of that thread just people going "That character looks ugly!" ?

So...how about that The Evil Within? Nothing's been said about the weapons that Juli will have in her DLC campaign, but that should be interesting.

I can't think of a single game from this guy that didn't have an awful story. Of course we are here for the gameplay Lol. Each piece of software he has put out would benefit from just not having cutscenes or a worded narrative at all. I'd rather have vague randomness than terrible story telling in a game.

To be fair the Revelations thread is filled with this picture of the girl and hardly talking about the game. Here it's more grounded. Roll on October.
