Super Smash Bros for 3DS - First week sales over 1 million (including eShop)

:) No worries, you weren't technically wrong.

Yes, Brawl's ~7 years Vs. 2 days of sales in 1 territory.

All right, then let's have a more like-to-like comparison.

Brawl shipped 1.31 million units from January 31st, 2008 through March 31st, 2008 in Japan, and 3.24 million units from March 9th, 2008 through March 31st, 2008 in The Americas.

That leaves a total of 4.85 million units as of March 31st, 2008.

It's not launch sales, but it is the earliest metric we have.

Smash Bros. 3DS, at >1 million first week, seems to be outpacing it. Let's wait for USA sales though before making that determination.

Yeah, portable Smash will definitely be a thing every generation after this.

Well Sakurai was first considering just making Smash 4 for 3DS but later included Wii U due to hardware limitations.

Very interested in Smash Wii U sales after this.

Uh, duh. Brawl doesn't have playable Rosalina.

Yeah, portable Smash will definitely be a thing every generation after this.

This is why merging the hardware architecture and OS for the next console and portable looks like the shrewdest of decisions. No more playing whack-a-mole with trying to save the portable system in one region one year and saving the console in another region another year; with a shared code base they can roll out non-redundant dual releases like Smash at a more efficient clip.

Which is good, because after playing Kid Icarus: Uprising I find myself hoping that Sakurai will take a few years to work on something else.

Does this make it the highest selling BN game? At least by selling speed/rate? Trying to think of similar or better ones. Maybe a classic Pac-Man game? I mean how many of their games ever do 1 Million in a couple of days?

Look, all I meant by bringing that up was to say it had a long way to go.

I apologise if that was construed like I was belittling the sales. Don't get me wrong, the sales are great. They just have a long way to go.

I wasn't trying to be antagonistic (I like your second post), but it seemed a rather odd (?) thing to bring up is all. Not that you were belittling the sales, but just that the comment was odd. Or maybe obvious is the better word. Like, 'Of course there's still a long way to go, the game's only been out 2 days'.

Isn't the easiest comparison Smash4's first week sales to Brawl's first week sales? Thst would be the earliest confirmed numbers we'll have and Smash4 will definitely be ahead by a good margin.

Can't believe people are getting angry because AquaMarine (does anyone read sales threads?) made a quick sales comparison.

Stop being so defensive for no reason.

I wonder what their contract with Nintendo looks like. I doubt they get a percentage cut, so what kind of sum was needed to hire half the company's talent?

Sorry, it's late and I just wanted to put something out quickly. It was the first metric I found, so I went with it.

Sorry.

According to Famitsu, Brawl sold 816,198 in the week beginning January 28th, 2008 and ending February 3rd, 2008 (so 4 days of tracking).

The number in the OP combines shipments with download sales...so I went with the first shipment metric.

It was around 800k IIRC. But it also had four days in comparison to the 3DS' 2 days.

Edit: Beaten by the Queen of Sales

so i'm not very knowledgable in game sales but is "1m sold" in the first week a lot in the gaming industry?

i would take it to be a lot since it's in japan but is it a lot for the japanese market? i would imagine the US/Europe having similar numbers.

I think Aquamarine was speaking more for its sustained growth, it has a higher debut than the previous game right? She is a shareholder in the company if I'm not mistaken, if i were too, i'd like to see if it can reach the potential and eventually surpass it. So in that case yeah this news is good, but it has a while to go.

No one is angry or being defensive about it. They just found the metric and comparison out of place with Brawl LTD sales being compared to 2-day sales for Smash 3DS. The 3DS has a good chance of matching Brawl & possibly surpassing it by a bit. What are MK7 sales at?

Yeah, it's generally a lot. Especially when it's only for two days, and only for Japan.

Awesome. Glad to hear that the franchise is gaining the success it deserves so far from Sakurai and Bandai Namco! Let's hope the Wii U gains numbers like this. We all know it'll do well and sell systems if it releases this holiday season. Add on the Amiibo sales and yeah... Nintendo will make that serious $.

What are numbers like for popular franchises in Japan? Is 1m not very normal to see?

Image what a worldwide launch would have done. When is Nintendo going the get over giving Japan special treatment all the time? *plays his demo angrily in the corner*

1 million sales is considered pretty good, especially for first week. As mentioned earlier, only 3 other titles have launched on the 3DS with sales greater than 1 million (Pokemon XY, Monster Hunter 4, and Youkai Watch 2).

Ok they DEFINITELY need to offer something people can't turn down for the Wii U version in Japan, otherwise people there may very well be content with this version (Japan is a handheld country).

Hint: If both versions have the same roster, why buy the Wii U version?
please sakurai

I don't think this problem will exist in the west but it very well could in Japan.

The 3DS version seems to be quality through and through so the sales are deserved.

It was the right decision to go with Namco for Smash 4.

They are one of the few companys with the ressources at their fingertips to develop two big (and hopefully balanced) fighting games in contrast to.....Game Arts and Brawl.

Well as you said Japan is handheld/mobile centric right now. I doubt that even an additional roster can do some miracles for the Wii U in Japan.

I predict the Wii U version will get around MK8 launch numbers in first week (between 400k-500k).

You do realise it has nothing to do with "special treatment", right? Japan getting it first also in no way will impede international sales.

I doubt the Wii U version will have any difference in the roster at launch.

http://nintendoeverything.com/sakur...dlc-patching-why-villagertrainer-are-in-more/

From a past interview with Sakurai it was stated both versions will have the same characters, there were no lead version, and both would be completed to their full potential before any DLC consideration.

I think playing the game with an updated appearance on Wii U is enough incentive to buy it.

So what are the bets on 3ds Smash vs WiiU Smash. We thinking 3DS Smash will outsell it due to bigger install base or WiiU because more folks will feel that is the definitive version?

This is probably gonna be the most double dipped game of all time.

3DS one will sell better, that's almost guaranteed. The Wii U one will probably do a Mario Kart and sell over a million on launch weekend too, but worldwide rather than one region.

3DS version will outsell it by a decent margin but the Wii U version will do pretty good.

The handheld vs console ratio is skewed between Japan and rest of the market. That's why Nintendo releases 2 versions.

Holy shit! Well done, Japan!

And with the Japanese population shrinking, the attachment rate per human to Smash Bros is like at 1:1! Crazy impressive! Crazy exclamations!!!
