Destiny - Review Thread

All comes down to personal preference. Personally I loved the story & characters in the last of us, I think it should be mandatory for any video game writers or game play designers (or whoever comes up with ambient conversations and actions with support characters) but I found the game a little repetitive near the end. I personally got more hours of fun out of destiny and for me, destiny is a more fun game that I will play more in the future whereas I ran out of enthusiasm to play the expansion that was included in the PS4 remaster of TLOU.

This is not to say that TLOU doesnt deserve its rave reviews, its a great game and I think its fair scoring more than Destiny. But Destiny seems to have people that just cant understand how some people find this game great fun, and can ignore the poor aspects (like story etc).

Its a fun game and I enjoy playing it, and I am so pleased it sold so well.

Vince is right. To this day, I enjoy games without an engaging story, Mario, Donkey Kong, Sports Friends, fighting games.

What makes our medium different than other mediums? ITS ABOUT THE GAME PLAY!

And for the redundant-boring retort of "But Bungie promised an amazing story"

Give me a fu(&!ng break!

Hollywood AAA script-writing and conversanal-script has arguably only been achieved by Th Last Of Us.

Who did you think was making this game?

That's right, it's Bungie. And you arguably got THE BEST DAMN FPS EXPERIANCE IN A DECADE!!!

Irresponsible to do what they've been doing since the beginning of game reviews? Publish a review of what is in the box so the consumer can make an informed decision? You're simultaneously covering for Bungie and making the reviewers out to be some evil conglomerate out to get them. Stop.
The game is server-based. "In the box" is old man talk.

And the earliest reviews aren't evil, just wrong. Wrong as in method, not result.

I just reached a point today after playing where I realized there is no point in playing. I play the same missions and maps so I can get better gear to play the same missions over again?

Yes. If that isn't your thing avoid Destiny.

I used to play levels in HALO over and over and over again just for fun or for an achievement.

I've reached that point of existential angst in every mmo I've played. I'm not saying destiny is an mmo, but you just described the problem with end game raiding. Raid, get gear, raid, ad nauseum.

To leave you with this perceptive thought: we've heard with a million monkeys with a million keyboards could produce complete works of Shakespeare, but now thanks to the internet, we know that is not true.

The Verdict

Simplistic “it’s like X mixed with Y” comparisons don’t really add up when attempting to explain what Destiny is, or why it’s worth playing. It borrows from many well-established gaming destinations, but the climate of each is wildly different, and often incompatible. It’s a complex production that boils down simply to this: Destiny is a mechanically excellent, visually evocative FPS housed within an under-developed RPG framework. The endgame might hook you for the long haul once you fully understand it, but Destiny is ultimately unable to be all the different games it’s trying so hard to be.

7.8 is acceptable for people who find issues with Destiny but think the gunplay is good, and people who think it is great but think it needs more content.

What algorithm did they use?

Oh yeah, metacritic.

Nobody said anything about Uncharted in here.

This is probably the best plan. The last page has brought some of the most bizarre opinions I've ever seen on Gaf. I had to reread a bunch of them multiple times just to be sure I didn't get them completely wrong.

Sounds like everyone at IGN is relieved to finally get it out. Maybe the reviewer got overwhelmed by having this big of a review?

There is something going on behind the scenes at IGN for this review. I am 100% not saying they are being paid, or pressured. It looks more of a personel or time-management issue.

I'm probably feeling crazy, but if there's anything going on regarding moneyhats with Destiny, I imagine it to be Microsoft spending money to spread negative public awareness for this release.

Again, not moneyhatting. Maybe they had trouble in the video production or something. But something happened there...

I tell you what. Fair review. But if they were so eager to get it out why did they make the freaking video review so fancy pants with all that bleeding effects and scene transitions and stuff. I haven't seen that in any recent IGN review. I could be wrong though.

The reviewer (Vince) already said there was technical problems. I know their Podcast Beyond crew often complain about videos taking a day or two to simply process, and sometimes they fail and have to redo it.

I really don't think there was anything shady going on - the review just took a while.

LOL wow. Last of Us poor gameplay.
It's an opinion.
Holy shit, I know people have options and all but Uncharted 2 and the Last of Us being worse games than Destiny in terms of single player? Those two games having worse feedback? Those two games having more shallow gameplay than bullet sponge, brain-dead boss plus adds?

I was merely talking about encounters, but beyond the story and graphics, I found the Uncharted series (and TLoU) to be thoroughly average, with a couple of good moments. I would much rather play Destiny's "campaign," whatever it is, even with its repetition.
You're going to get wrecked for this and you should.

Uncharted 2 absolutely demolishes Destiny's mission design and encounters. The train sequence alone in Uncharted 2 is leagues, absolutely leagues, better than anything in Destiny.
It's opinions, dude. From what I remember of the train sequence, that was just one huge set piece that wasn't all that fun to play again to me. The enemies were extremely generic, lacking in personality and were incredibly dull to fight against. Nothing like the fun Vex, Hive, Fallen, and Cabal that's in Destiny.

To each her own.

Holy shit. I don't have enough tinfoil for that hat,

It's just a crazy thought, but I would not be surprised. I'm honestly shocked to seeing this game receive sub 6/10 scores. And I'm the last person to say that it is a flawless game.

It probably isn't a PR campaign, but whatever is causing this negative hype is very interesting to me.

Making snide Bungie/Destiny comments has almost reached meme-like levels.

I think I read somewhere that Vegas, the editing tool they use to edit the sound effects and images, has been infected with Sagev.

Opinion is the new blue. Do not abuse it or you will find out that is not so "nice" to wear.

Trust me... you would not be "the last person" to the say it's a flawless game. It'd more likely be one of those people you keep explaining "don't understand it".

I get it! There's absolutely no reason that PR companies have budgets for this type of operation, or any precedent in believing that such a thing has not happened in the past.

Anyway, I prefaced the post by saying that it was a crazy thought, so obviously I am not making factual statements.

I realized this during the beta. I haven't reached endgame yet because I've been super busy, but what will drive me is cool looking or good gear for PvP. If the PvP community isn't strong a month or two from now, I'll be jumping ship as well.
