Man, I really need some actual people to play against. I've been using Villager a ton in the demo, and I can't tell if I'm getting better at landing his moves, or just getting better at cheering the AI.

Wolf isn't a clone, but they sure could've been more creative with his specials.

Blaster
Reflector
Sideways dash attack
Charging 360 degree dash attack

Yes yes, they're functionally different from Fox and Falco, but they're still based on their moves. It's like how Sakura's spinning kick, fireball, and uppercut are functionally different from Ken and Ryu's, but she's still considered a Shoto. Whereas a character like Guile feels much more unique because his projectile isn't a hadoken and his rising attack is a flip kick instead of an uppercut (not to mention he's a charge character, but that's not really applicable in this comparison).

The annoying thing is that these all used unique animations. They took exactly as much effort to make as new moves would have. They just decided to copy Fox and Falco because of reasons.

Because Wolf is from the same series as Fox and it leads to consistency. Why does Ike have a charging neutral special and a counter as his down special, same as Marth, but with new animations? Because of reasons?

Also Wolf's only playable appearance had him using guns, so a blaster makes total sense.

Honestly picking Guile to differentiate the characters of Street Fighter just shows why I hate that game. You could've said Bison and it would've made more sense since he's nothing like Ken or Ryu, but fundamentally outside of the fact guile is a charge character is moves are all practically similar to the shotos.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Stuff like that is common in fighting games, due to archetypes. Sagat, Demitri, Morrigan, etc. are all shoto-clones too despite functioning differently.

Hell, Guile is a shoto too despite different input commands :p

You missed his point: that similar moves seem much more different when they have different animations (Guile) than when they don't (Sakura, Wolf). Bison wouldn't have made sense here.

That's also a really weird reason to hate Street Fighter.

He could've used weapons from Assault, like the bazooka or grenades or the sniper rifle.

So how is Samus in this version? What they did to her in Brawl compared to Melee still wounds my heart to this day.

Although, I guess ZS Samus may still be an option...

They should have been a little more creative with Ike's moveset as well.

You can't change the d-pad controls, right? I was hoping to use Smash attacks with it, seeing that you could when using the Wiimote + Nunchuck in Brawl.
Wow. That's so true. I would have love to be able to press up and boom up smash, that was the quick smash for the nunchuck and Wiimote combination, what a missed opportunity. They really want you to buy that new 3ds lol

A lot of Street Fighter 2's special moves are functionally similar but different in animation. Smash is the same way with the abundance of characters that have uppercut recoveries, chargeable projectiles, and counters to name just a few. Disliking Guile because his sonic boom is functionally similar to Ryu's hadoken and his flash kick is functionally similar to Ryu's shoryuken strikes me as odd as Smash is guilty of the same thing but to, I'd argue, a far worse degree.

Capcom essentially created clones in fighting games with Street Fighter but I think they've learned over time to mix things up. UMVC3 had only clone if I'm remembering correctly and that clone was still very different. Even in Street Fighter 4, a game that suffers from pandering to people who stopped playing Street Fighter after 2, the admittedly numerous shoto clones still play very differently (like clones in Smash) while having a great deal of unique moves. Capcom at least realized that the flashy super moves needed to be different.

Finally set up homepass/cheatpass for smash 3DS. That's a pretty good way to get custom moves. I get about one per round, and it only takes a couple minutes, once all the streetpasses come in. Highly recommend it.

Is it October 3rd yet?

Also I like how Black Pit has his staff in his official art, yet only uses it for his final smash. The Sakurai Laziness (tm).

Is there a list or fast method to unlocking all characters?

The easy way is that each character is unlocked after 10 multiplayer matches after the last.

So 10, 20, 30, all the way up to 120 for all 12.

The rest I unlocked just by playing single player content randomly, with the exception of bowser jr, who is unlocked by playing classic w/ bowser and beating it above lvl 7.

Ness: Finish 10 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with two characters
Falco: Finish 20 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with one character
Wario: Finish 30 Versus matches, or beat 100-Man Melee (unconfirmed)
Lucina: Finish 40 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with three Fire Emblem characters
Dark Pit: Finish 50 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with four characters
Dr. Mario: Finish 60 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with Mario
R.O.B.: Finish 70 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with Mr. Game & Watch
Ganondorf: Finish 80 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with a Zelda character
Mr. Game & Watch: Finish 90 Versus matches
Bowser Jr.: Finish 100 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with Bowser on 7.0 difficulty or higher
Duck Hunt: Finish 110 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode eight times
Jigglypuff: Finish 120 Versus matches, or beat Classic Mode with custom moves enabled (unconfirmed)

Source is gamnesia.

For lucina, that's not true, I got it by beating classic mode w/ marth - I hadn't beaten it w/ robin/ike yet.
I think I got dark pit by beating classic mode w/ pit.
For ganondorf I beat classic mode w/ Link FIRST, which gave me falco, not ganondorf. Once I beat it w/ zelda it gave me ganondorf. This could be because I met two requirements at once w/ beating it w/ link first, but who knows.
I definitely unlocked game and watch some other way, but I'm not sure how.

Where on Mega Man's down-aerial is it a spike? Seems like it knocks the enemy up most of the time. And am I missing something about the Leaf Shield or is just kind of useless?

I think only near mega man's body is it actually a spike. You basically can't use it as a projectile if you want the meteor effect.

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
lol transplanting data from Melee being the cause of old Melee characters not coming back because it's hard to do, but Mr Samurai didn't you just say in another article that the majority of the characters are redone from scratch?

Pls.

I don't see the hypocrisy in his comment.

In fact, all he mentions is how it's not easy to transplant data from Melee, he says nothing about characters. I imagine that was in response perhaps to the various Melee stages that weren't brought back for Brawl and now 3DS. Or he's just saying he couldn't just lift everyone from Melee to Brawl and then to 3DS, explaining why some were cut.

Are most of you people who have the JP version living in Japan or have you imported because you simply cannot wait?

I'm only a casual Smash Bros. fan, but I'm pretty hyped for this game - I think I'm gonna get both versions.

In preparation, I've been playing Brawl and getting the Final Smash trophies. That, and this thread, has me pretty jazzed for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U.

The only 3DS I have is a Japanese one I imported on release since I started learning Japanese the year prior. I just got it digitally because I didn't want to wait for it to ship.

Couldn't wait. Bought a used one on ebay, bought the game digitally on eshop. Worth it.

When I was watching early streams it certainly seemed that way, it looked like when you fulfilled two requirements at once you'd first get the one tied to the # of classic clears, and the one tied to the specific character with which you cleared classic was bumped down to your next clear. As they are pretty close together at times it seemed like the pattern was random, but there certainly was some method to that madness.

I remember after I played pikachu, charizard and lucario in classic mode I unlocked jiggy, I doubt there's any custom moves related conditions. My bet is beating classic mode with three pokemons to unlock her.

Maturity, bitches.
The best thing about that sword is that it was never really seen in a game, just a demo. Phantom Ganon in Wind Waker would sport something similar, but the reality is, that sword is a non entity.
