Famitsu interview with Tabata details Final Fantasy XV's battle system and more

Seriously, think about it. Tabata said that the ending of the Duscae demo will be
memorable and surprising. It would be genius if they can tie FF15 to its
Fabula Nova Crystallis roots and have Lightning present as a summon. I think
it would be tasteful way to connect the games.

You had 8 years of Lightning. Please stop :(.

No but he's right because you see Lightning is now eternally reincarnated in every single FF multiverse. She's like Clara Oswald being in every single Doctor Who series, except that she's not saving anybody!

Like Gilgamesh before her, rereleases of old Final Fantasy games will now feature bonus Lightning content. And there's no way we'll see a new FF release without her now!

She's -everywhere-. From the Curtain Call 3D icon to FFXIV.

The surprise is for long time FF fans and I doubt XIII is considered as such.

I expect more of a teaser though. A summon teaser won't be any good, although it can happen. We can also get a glimpse of some old FF characters. Cid, maybe.

I think of this surprise as a teaser for a game instead of a teaser about the game.

I'm perfectly fine with changes of the battlesystem.. I don't want it to play like a KH game, I would love to play it different and as of now it sounds very interesting to me.

it is not that I don't like KH's battlesystem.. in fact I like it, but I don't want to see the same or a similar system in a FF game.

That's what I'm saying! If I recall, Fal'Cie and L'cie are part of the FF13 Saga and including
Type-0 and FF15. It would be obvious to include something, maybe Etro as a summon.

Still, Lightning fighting along side Noctis, with Ali Hillis's sultry voice would be phenomenal.

Tabata, do it yo.

Precisely :3

People need to get over the whole description of the battle and wait for the demo. I see people jumping to conclusions within minutes.

On Paper, the combat system of Arkham series sounds like crap. In actual gameplay, it is a whole lot better. There is no way to get to know the combat of a game, especially an ARPG, without having to play it, or having an experience of it (if it is a sequel).

Have I woken up from the nightmare? Someone tell me we still have KH combat system?

All good. I'm over it.
It's never over.

Combat system will most probably do it's job and be adequate

I find it interesting that a lot of people are hyped for this game so much even after 8 years. I can't think of any other game with such a long dev cycle* maintaining it's hype for so long.

*Including the non-working time from 2006-2011

People are not really hyped for the game that was promised to them almost 8 years ago.

They are hyped at the prospect of there being a brand new mainline FF game, which won't feature Lightning and her shenanigans. In other words, we have been waiting for a good FF game for a long time now, an offline one atleast, not like XIV.

Will FF XV deliver on the hype, or will it crush our dreams altogether? We will find it out soon enough once the demo is released.

Exactly, anyone hyped for Versus is setting themselves up for disappointment.

Its a mainline FF game, of course we're hyped, even if what they're saying doesn't give confidence. Hype is nothing like Versus for me, but its still there.

I guess that explains it. People that are hyped for this game as a new mainline FF will be OK with all that it offers (given that the game ends up being good), while others that had in mind it would be versus are a bit worried.

Versus is essentially dead now. Any shred of hope that I had regarding it after Nomura's departure vanished once I learned about the combat system. Tabata's word also made it clear that the only link to Nomura is his vision of the game, and they are trying their best to retain most of it.

All good. I'm over it.

In my dream, this was how the new details on FFXV's battle system went.

FFXV's battle system will utilize a full action combat system largely inspired by the Kingdom Hearts series.

Players will find themselves being immersed with fast-paced combat with a deep customization element that enables player to tweak party A.I like Final Fantasy XII's Gambit system.

In addition, all party members are fully playable in the final game, with each having their own unique playstyle and skill/abilities. This means that player will be able to switch between characters manually to chain unique, interesting combos. It will be up for you to discover your own strategies and approach towards each battles.

Regarding your playable characters, we envision Noctis as a 'Weapon Summoner'. He can perform various combos via constantly switching his arsenal of weapons on a fly during battle. His ability to warp will also add an extra layer of strategy as an advanced evasion skill. Although we predict Noctis to be the main character that people will use most often, rest assured that we have made sure that everyone else will be able better in different scenario, so you are encouraged to diversify your party member control.

We want the player to feel in complete control of every second in battles. You will be able to jump, double jump, climb onto enemies to target their individual parts or weak points, and so on. Because this is Final Fantasy, there will be a large selection of magic spells to use as well as summon creatures that you can directly control in battles. We hope you look forward to that.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I for one can't wait to spend $60(?) on this demo. IIRC, I payed $120 for a FFXIII demo (including FFVII AC).

Tabata why...

Tabata's also in pursuit of a Final Fantasy that's not as overwhelming as its predecessors, and one that can be enjoyed by a broader audience. "With Final Fantasy 15, I do want to make it more casual," he says. "Of course the depth of the game is going to be there, but I want to make it so players can easily experience the satisfaction of the depth of the game." There's an option to set that car to drive itself, allowing players to sit back and take in the sights - although there is also an option to drive it manually, should they want to engage more fully with the world.

"Another example is in the combat," explains Tabata. "With the hardware specifications of the newer consoles, it's possible to set it up so you have different enemies and different choices of attacks you can enter in, but I want to simplify that. It'll basically be a one-button action, and the AI intuitively outputs an action that kind of satisfies, gives you that instant gratification, and it connects with the simple touch of a button. I myself am not getting any younger. I don't want to be frantically pushing buttons. I also want to utilise the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves."

Sounds like Tabata is getting too old for action games, he just wants to watch it all happen. Lmfao.

I get guys, wait and see, but just look at the shit he's saying.

We are in an age where game series like Dark Souls, which is unforgiving and doesn't hold your hand, are one of the most talked about series today. They also sell millions of units. Why the fuck Square is purposely making it casual, hand holding garbage is ridiculous. Being all proud of it makes it even worse.

For everyone that has waited for the greater good of a decade for this game, this is the biggest balls we could have received short of them cancelling it.

Fuck you Square and please go out of business so the Final Fantasy IP ends up in competent hands.

"I felt that I wanted to shift it more to be more realistic. For example, when you're battling a really strong boss like a behemoth, if you go at it from just the front you're going to get hit with his counter-attacks. You have to think about baiting it to attack forward, but then break its stance and attack it from the side. I wanted to make it so you're fighting a real animal, but with easy-to-manipulate controls as well as dramatic effects."

I don't know, let's see how the enemy's mechanics fit in.

I don't get why everyone is over reacting to his quote, I am picturing a more intuitive Type 0 combat system. I'm sure there will be more to it than holding attack or dodge. You probably have to swap in whatever skill (will probably have many choices) you're using and hold the button or something...

You'd think they'd have heard our complaints about FFXII being a 'hold the analog stick forward' simulator.

For me it remains the same. He added nothing new. We already know about the "hold to attack and defend". So, here we go with overraction about the same thing again... Just in other words.

To me the thing is, if they cant deliver with FFXV a good experience we may get it with Kingdom Hearts at least. But we should wait further details about the combat of FFXV, theres lacking too much info to say its a lost cause! The combat wont be resumed on "hold X to attack", is like people is completely ignoring stats, a gambit-lile system, the weapon deck system, magics, warps and summons.

Also, about the auto-pilot on cars, thats not much different of fast travel and stuff.

I seriously wonder where this whole "it's casual = mainstream will buy" mentality comes from. I've never ever heard a guy/girl heard talking "it's totally easy, now I'm going to pick it up". You are either into RPGs/games and you'll play it, or you're not and won't. If the game is stellar and praised, you get people to pick it up that otherwise wouldn't, but that has fucking nothing to do with it being casual... FFS, I'm seriously pissed. I want to fucking suplex each and all of the devs that turn game series into a casual mash / single-button / press A for awesome fest. I knew I would hate the thing Tabata does to the game and realize more and more that I really wanted Nomuras' Versus instead of this seemingly disaster of a game. For 8 years straight, I wouldn't have dreamed of me saying this, but I may not pick up the game if it turns out to be like FF 13 with style over substance. :/
My day is fucking ruined. I fucking hate you Square. Please die and sell out the franchise to a company that actually cares.

tumblr_mw01slxcif1r29dxeo1_500.gif

Remember what I said about "mass hysteria over jumping to conclusions"...
So people should be emotionless? Some people really care about the game and such a NEWS is just devastating. It's not like you jump to conclusion, it's a stated FACT that he wants the game to be ultra casual, 1-button-pony-trip. Sure it can still be fun and work out well enough, but it doesn't change the fact that it'll play like FF12 and FF13, in which you're more passive than active for the majority of the game. People are just worried, rightfully so.

If the game is too difficult people will quickly dump it, especially in Japan with the way their used market is. Remember, they had to add an easy mode to XIII for Japan.

So when ffXII did automated combat everyone raved about it, and now that ffXV is going throught the same route everyone is angry? Why?

I hated ffXII, and I am massively disappointed at these news, too

It's crystal clear that this game can no longer be called a true ARPG. What a fucking disappointment. The exploration aspect is the only thing i'm still looking forward to now, the gameplay sounds like a complete train wreck at this point.

Settle down, Tabata. Remember that you have A LOT of folks who grew up with Final Fantasy, and actually CRAVE that complex depth.

XIII had ZERO complex depth.

The only people that need to settle down are the ones overreacting. Tabata means casual-friendly in terms of button inputs. That doesn't dictate game design depth.

13's combat system was fun. The problem with it was pacing that led it to be really simple for a large part of the intro. Ideally this game could have expanded on that system, giving you more jobs and opening up much sooner. Something like on-the-fly character and weapon switching would be great too.

But this casual stuff Tabata is talking about is really disheartening.

You can only go so far. Automated everything doesn't make for a compelling, interactive experience. If you have to dumb down the whole game design to "holding one of two buttons", I doubt you can add a vast depth behind it, without scaring the oh-so important casual "i want to watch a movie while i play a game" crowd. FF 7 wasn't easy at all and it sold well, this whole "it's easy = mainstream will buy it" is a myth and nothing more. In fact, the main stream used to be, and still is, normal people that play games. The casual crowd is just that, another target audience. It's nothing but a farce to alter the whole game just for that small group of potential buyers. Too much streamlining and over-casualisation can actually hurt the sales, beause the majority of the time when game tries to enforce it, it severly drags the quality down. See Sim City, most mobile adaptitations and others.
