Crytek Says It's Getting Increasingly Difficult to Wow People With Graphics

"As opposed to the times of the original Crysis, we as an industry have reached a quality level now where it is getting increasingly more difficult to really wow people," Crytek’s principal rendering engineer Nicolas Schulz told DSOGaming in an interview. "That said, there’s still enough areas to explore and we will definitely keep pushing the boundaries as much as possible."

Schulz also discussed the limitations of high-end PC graphics processing units (GPUs) and the current generation of consoles. On PC, he said, the current generation of high-end GPUs is still far from being able to reach 60 frames-per-second at 4K resolution, which is four times the amount of pixels that need to be shaded compared to 1080p.

"This is very quickly saturating the available bandwidth," Schulz said. "The consoles are clearly behind high-spec GPUs in terms of raw horsepower, however on the positive side, they share the same modern architecture which enables a wealth of interesting optimization techniques."

Time to wow us with some actually good gameplay then.

For a company that is built around making amazing graphics but shallow gameplay maybe they should refocus a little.

You mean people caught onto you and now you actually have to put in effort again to make a fun game?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
There is one solution - 64 GB Ram for PS 5 and Xbox 10.

Uncharted 4 says "hi"...trailer still wows me even now. At least I know i can get great gameplay and perhaps the best graphics from ND.

Star Citizen, Witcher 3, The Order, Aliens, Infamous: SS, Driveclub, Forza Horizon 2, and more are all wowing people visually.

Maybe Crytek should focus on making a game that actually wows people with the game play instead. Or at the very least get some decent graphic artists.

Well yeah, and I hate to say it but they were one of the drivers of getting so many consumers to focus almost solely on graphics.

It's not. What you need is good art but also stop focusing on non natural effets.

The best looking games are those with either a great art style, or with sweet, natural lighting, without excess of effects.

How about making the next Crysis an actual sandbox, instead of a 6 hour cinematic masterpiece like C3? Insane that the Far Cry series has lapped them in emergent gameplay.

Honestly, what % of gamers is concerned about 4k gaming right now? Is it enough to potentially bankrupt your company for?

I guess people have not read the interview or realized that this selective quote is from a dude who wholly deals with rendering.

Instead people will just troll type "Crytek lol gameplay lol."

No offense, but bad way to start the OP with some comment about gameplay man.

Ethan Carter wowed me way more than Crysis 3. If Crytek moves away from "most graphics" and towards "best use of graphics" I'm sure they can wow people again

It's not any more difficult to push graphics...It's just getting more expensive.

its more expensive because more artists are needed which kind of implies more effort as management of more people has more overhead since you have one more layer to synchronize workflow properly.

Just take a look in the Forza Horizon OT or the Photomode thread.

Plenty of people wowed by the graphics in there.

Same can probably be said for Drive Club as well.

I think they meant, "its getting increasingly difficult to wow people when all your game has going for it is graphics"

Bring back the gameplay and open-world of that original island level in Crysis. I remember I played that demo tons of hours, the graphics were absolutely incredible, and the gameplay kept me playing.

Crysis 2 and 3 obviously looked better and better graphically, but the games themselves got increasingly worse.

A lot of people also don't seem to realize the importance of Crytek in the field of engine development. Their real contribution is CryEngine and frankly, that's good (good for third parties utilizing it). Different companies specialize in different things, the Crysis series is more or less a promotional demo for that tech.

I think you're right - and also the original Far Cry when it came out was gorgeous as well and fun to play until the stupid mutants. I don't know why they always have to put a second, awful enemy in half way through their games. I haven't played Ryse but I assume it's like that as well.

No offense either but i think you're trying to reach here.

I really don't see what is "out of context" in the OP and title. Or how my comment doesn't stand.

@ricochetguro: do you have anything substantial to say instead of posting stupid gifs?Once was enough.

Well, it is not just fancy realistic graphics to draw people in, it is the STYLE of the visuals themselves that do so :).

I mean, I love the looks of colorful games (like the ones Nintendo puts out, Okami, Prince of Persia 2008, the new 2D Raymans, Sword Art Online:HW, Persona 4 Golden, ect) due to how unique they look. The Raymans looking like something ripped right out of Disney, Okami looking like a beautiful painting in motion, Nintendo games oozing with charm and happiness, PoP 2008 like Okami looking like a water painting in motion, Persona and SAO having very stylized menus and icons, ect. All of the above games don't just focus on graphics either, so there is a plus right there :).

The issue with the hyper realistic visuals is that....they really can't get better :l. They reached their peak with the PS3/360/PC last gen and all that is left now is to refine them enough so they look 'super' real. But, we play games TO get away from the real world and visit new ones :). It works against themselves and its at the point that if you have that style of graphics without any unique 'draw'....they just look boring, drab and uninspired.

I guess what I'm saying is that we need more Last of Us type visuals instead of the Call of Duty visuals, if that makes any sense :D.

Well, I'd say DF threads are proof of that. We've reached the point where everything looks incredible, no matter what you're playing on. You can buy a super pricey GPU, and the difference is still minor to anyone but the small minority of graphics whores.

Why would a rendering programmer do that?

The fact that a lot people working on a game can't contribute their opinions to (or, in many cases, even see) the big picture is one of the inherent major issues with modern massive-team AAA development.

With how much people bicker about graphics lately and seem to rubbish any game that isn't absolutely mind-blowing looking, I might argue that Crytek actually seem to have their priorities in order. ;)

I understand your point, but we do need companies like Crytek pushing the boundaries still. Progress just isn't gonna get made if everybody just 'settles'.

Mario Kart 8 was a great looking game and is fun as hell. How did Nintendo do it, then?

Stylize. Photorealism will always have trouble consistently impressing people.

Then work on shitty uninspired grounded art styles and realise art that is more breathtaking.

See Xenoblade Chronicles.

It doesn't. Both CoD and TLoU have a realistic art direction, what's the big difference? Aside from CoD having less focus on graphics because it needs to run at 60 fps.
