Crytek Says It's Getting Increasingly Difficult to Wow People With Graphics

i actually think a GPU crushing monster is probably their best bet for some kind of marketplace resonance. doesn't need to be big on content or a full price game or anything, just turn every engine setting up to fuck you and market as PC dick measuring pole.

OG crysis is still their biggest hit of the last decade.

Yes because pandering to a minority of graphics junkies that may or may not buy a Crytek game at full price to begin with is the way to go for a company that isn't doing well.

It is, if You combine CPU and GPU tests together.

You don't compare a single game to assess the quality of a piece of hardware anyways, so the point is moot for this discussion.

The point of those benchmarks were to see how Alien Isolation performed on hardware.

Oh thats completely true. I dont get why they do not release small tech demos or small games based around their engines with very high fidelity assets.

They've recently made high fidelity DK2 Oculus Rift demo and instead of trying to sell it into experience like game similar to Ethan Carter, they showed it only on GDC to press ;\

thanks for the laugh
Wasn't it pirated more than bought though? I was under the impression that it actually didn't do that great.

i don't think there's a big single player centric PC game released in the last decade that hasn't been pirated less than it was bought.

they were disappointed because they wanted CoD numbers out the gate which they deemed only possible on consoles. in retrospect, its long tail and "can it run crysis" status served it far better than its multiplat sequels.

a game doesn't need to be of crysis' scope to have that "can it run crysis" appeal and given crytek's traditional knack for starting strong and fizzling out after a few hours, a more limited experience would suite them creatively as well as financially.

It's really not hard to impress me.

There's a reason why Street Fighter III looks more impressive to my eyes than Street Fighter IV. To say it's hard to impress people with graphics is like saying it's hard to impress people with drawings these days. It's simply not true.

Graphics technology could never progress past this point and artists will have all the tools they need to make impressive-looking games.... just like how a painter with a canvas and a single brush has all he needs to make cool-looking artwork.

Heck, Xenoblade, for all it's hideous-low res textures, is flooring me right now with its impressive art style.

I wonder how this will end.

It's like art direction is more important than poly count and resolution. Who knew? ;)

It's still possible to wow with graphics. Visually, Ryse looks great and Uncharted 4 looks amazing as well. The problem is that flashy graphics can only carry a game so far.

Crysis 3 is both a CPU and GPU crusher on the right settings, and sold like butt.

"When you only focus on one aspect of game development for 10 years it gets hard to make improvements in just that area anymore." Man.

4. Believe me, if he has 20 TFs to use, he would not be saying it is difficult to wow someone.
I always think about this. Like what visuals could look like if they were as optimised for my PC as they were for consoles. Heh, it would make Uncharted 4 look like the first Doom in comparison.

This picture still represents my highest "OH MY GOSH THAT LOOKS GREAT" moment in graphics. I remember seeing it (or something like it) in Nintendo Power and my jaw just...dropping.

There's been similar stuff since then (I remember being blown away by the FF 7 commercials), but that was incredible.

Yeah it's getting tougher to wow with just brute force graphics, but combine that with good art/design, and it still looks great. Second Son's photo mode brought up a lot of clearly next-gen pictures that look amazing.

Didn't hurt that the Nintendo Power screenshot was dim and tiny so the graphics looked pretty much perfect.

I had the same reaction.

On PC, he said, the current generation of high-end GPUs is still far from being able to reach 60 frames-per-second at 4K resolution, which is four times the amount of pixels that need to be shaded compared to 1080p.

"This is very quickly saturating the available bandwidth," Schulz said.

Hang in there, Crytek!

Crysis 3 looks fantastic even on Xbox 360. Crysis 3 is probably my choice for best looking game for last generation.

It doesn't. Both CoD and TLoU have a realistic art direction, what's the big difference? Aside from CoD having less focus on graphics because it needs to run at 60 fps.

I guess I picked a wrong example then :l? Don't play many games with a realistic visuals so sorry if I didn't add much to the discussion :(.

I'm much younger, but my only memory of being blown away by graphics was playing Ocarina of Time for the first time. Other than that, my brain has seemingly processed everything as a logical increase, so I haven't really been 'wowed'. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate decent graphics, it's just never really been a selling point of games for me.

Probably because these days the underpowered consoles, at least exclusives wise, are putting out better graphics than PC's.

That isn't true. The PC version of Project Cars at 60 FPS blows away anything being done in DriveClub or Forza Horizon, despite both being very impressive games in their own ways.

Well I feel as though PC tech has been good enough for a while for most artists to be able to deliver their creative vision, so long as their creative vision isn't photorealism or something very close to it. I am still kind of excited to see stuff like ray tracing making its way into games, but that isn't going to determine whether the game looks good or not.

I'm much more impressed with good framerates, fast load times, animation, and the amount of things happening on screen.

I'm going to be a disagree fairy. I lost my shit at the Uncharted 4 trailer. I understand some people do not like the Uncharted series but I always found the game play to be the perfect mix of shooty-shooty bang bang and character development coupled with amazing set pieces and terrain traversal. These guys need to understand that purty graphics don't make a game. It's got to have meat.

Only in IQ, and naturally the frame rate. The lighting engine, weather effects, volumetrics and overall scope still aren't comparable.

Whatever you're eliminating it's not an apples to apples comparison. Also, like I give a shit. I'm not in the extreme minority that's tough to please with graphics like the poster I responded to.

By eliminating bottlenecks you can see how well each part can perform. If you do not do this then you will never see the maximum capabilities of a part in your system. Saying eliminating bottlenecks is not a fair comparison means you do not understand the science behind doing so.

PC, PS4, and Xbox One games have all impressed me equally over the last few months. Games look incredible now and I am no where near being used to it. A great art style helps a ton, but even more photoreal styles are still super impressive.

I disagree with that. I think DriveClub is pretty much the best looking game out there, period. Project Cars definitely looks amazing on the PC(I've even played it in 4k), but its not quite as jaw dropping in terms of immediate visual impact.

*For the moment*, exclusives on the PS4(and we might even talk about squeezing in Forza Horizon 2 here) are outdoing what's on PC. This will change, but there is definitely some great work going on with these first-party developers.

I find it interesting that he is talking about how the hardware is quickly saturated when targeting 4k.

Maybe if they started to use improvements in graphics in new ways and not making another good looking generic FPS or button basher people would start to become interested again.

These days? Not quite.
Next year maybe.
The Order and Uncharted look better than anything I've seen.
Driveclub is the best looking racing game by a good margin. Its 30FPS, but still way ahead of any other racing game.

Maybe they should just be a full fledged engine company and sell their engine to as many companies as possible. It's basically working for Epic, but not Crytek?
