Interesting. I've only noticed rotation in things (that LOD correctly) that are flower size or smaller in H2.
Yeah. And it's clear in pre-race tracking shots that distant trees exist as sprites (as they probably should). I dont have FH2 (no X1 yet :( ) but I'd imagine the game employs the same LOD technique.

Yeah, I'm one of those boring people that will capture everything I think is neat...lol.

Racing?...meh

Palm-like leaves are my thing. From Morocco to Long Beach. I'm glad they weren't overlooked in H2:

No doubt. Depending on the area, you can definitely find rough patches in H2. Generally the vistas are amazing, but sometimes it can get patchy.

Also, tiny, but BEAUTIFUL capture from one of the Driveclub time-lapse videos.

I want more volumetric clouds/global illumination this gen.

This is from some of my gameplay. I've seen better looking stretches, but this is what I'd call a fair indication of how the foliage looks in a race. It looks especially good driving through it, but I was the one making the point about like-for-like.

Personally I find DC's foliage more convincing in terms of detail and colors. They actually look like individual leaves that are being lit and shadowed whereas in FH2 the canopies looks like a bunch of large cut outs weirdly pasted in different angles. Even in motion that's how it looks in that gif.

I think it may be situational for both, as much as anything. I definitely think some of the DC assetts are nicer, but most of what I've seen in races is more along these lines:

Is that off-base from what you've played?

Why's the pipes got no shadow?

Is the sun in the wrong position? I thought everything that should cast shadows does under this engine.

Oh actually I think it might. Shots all blurry.

Have you seen any Scotland footage? Just about all of the trees on that stage look like the pictures I posted, which are of the Scotland environment.

The image you posted is from the India stage (which I'm guessing is the stage for most of the races you've seen?), so the tree vegetation there is different. The individual leaves are larger but they still look fine to me. Definitely not as nice as the Scotland trees, but my opinion still stands in them not looking like weird cutouts pasted together at different angles.

Both games obviously start to lose a bit of detail the further the object/tree is. I hope next gen consoles provide some kind of free texture filtering and AF, it would wonders for both of these games.

The crowds are a surprisingly high resolution...

Is he checking out her ass?

Playing Driveclub at the moment at it looks gorgeous, but I'm also surprised at how great Horizon 2 looks, especially considering it being open world.

Now I really want a new Motorstorm and Midnight Club.

Yeah it can be seen DC's foliage have way advanced lighting and shade.

I can see they had spent a quite of lot of time on foliages and sky/weather. Both are very important for the feel of real life alike immersion.

Being at work and there not being a system-level screen-capture mode makes that more difficult. I would hope that my point that you're choosing unmatched screens would make some sense to you.

So putting it next to your example, I hope you'd see more my perspective:

But those don't look any where near as realistic, nor does it change the fact that FH2's tree's are still flat and ordinary. A GIF just helps hide it a little better, but the differences are clear as day in the screenshots.

Here's some showing Driveclubs in motion in GIF form.

Again, capture examples.

One cockpit nitpick I have about FH2 is the turning animation. Really cranking the wheel the hand and wrist sometimes looks a bit off.

Aside from making another excessive wall-o-pics, you've just repeated mostly the same images with one game generally at a standstill and another in motion. You're also not including better reference images you yourself said looked incredible in another thread, which were offered to you here when it was suggested pictures in motion might be a better option.

These are great.

That's a really odd road texture.

Not dirt, yet not tarmac. A bizarre hybrid I've never seen before.

That does look strange. I wonder if they captured that from an Indian road or just created their own.

I can see how people might prefer DC foliage, but FH2 is hardly a slouch when you can actually run into and over its foliage, needing to avoid it at high speed most of the time while you're just looking at what is essentially three-dimensional wallpaper with DC because of its restrictive track-only driving. DC certainly benefits in showing a large world that never has to stand up to closer inspection because you can never get close to any of it outside of those bits along the trackside which get priority for having the best quality assets and highest LOD forms.

Wish I had photos but one of my wow moments from DC was when I was driving through India, and the sun was setting and the way individual leaves kept reflecting on the dash and window of the car. Was absolutely stunning. I just wish Evo had made a button to put the visor Down as it was also blinding lol.

Both DC and FH2 look amazing.

If someone had have told me back in 1991 that racing games would look like DC and FH2, I'd have called them liars. I mean, this was what I was playing then.

We've come a long-ass way.

I've seen roads like that. It's like...sort of a cheaper, seasonal surface they'll make in some areas. I'd bet it's from real reference photos.

Oh I remember loving this game. The password to that level was Business!

Why is there a yellow filter on forza screen. Same was tge case with original Horizon
There has been in all of the Forza games, it's always sort of annoyed me but it doesn't ever get in the way of me enjoying them.

I believe thats Forza Horizon 2's low poly crowd for when they are at a distance, but people are able to get a shot of them in photomode some how. They are (usually) better looking than that.

1) LoD for crowd/scenery/car models is based purely on distance from the camera.

2) Photomode has 20x zoom.

Combine the two, and you can get nice, full-screen shots of low-LoD models that usually take up only a handful of pixels on-screen during gameplay/at more reasonable zoom levels.

They're actually pretty detailed, at least by racing-game-crowd-model standards, when you look at the top LoD models:

I remember playing that at home and being so envious of the arcade version's graphics - I thought it was unbelievable back then.

Arcade envy was something I had to endure through the 80's and early 90's :(

I wished my Amiga Hard Drivin' was as good as the Arcade version.

I don't think anybody should be allowed to utter the phrase, "looks better than Forza 5" until a 1080P/60fps driving game comes out on the PS4/XB1 that is therefore worthy to be compared to it.

Project Cars looks like it might be a contender. It's supposed to be 1080P/60fps on PS4/XB1.

I prefer 60fps but that doesn't change my opinion that fh2 looks better.

it looks amazing in motion and when you're still.. same cant be said about the others.. lol

Based on the screenshots in this thread, and my few hours with the game - I'd say Driveclub looks better than that... By quite a lot actually.

Still. Super pumped for project cars hnnnnnnngh

We've come a long-ass way.

We've come a long way in many regards. But if we're being honest, the gameplay is pretty much the same thing. Granted we have much better physcis and smarter AI. But look at that gif above. At it's core, not much has changed.

Cross post. Foliage and tree's just look fantastic in Driveclub. Not even just for a racer either. I mean, this could be used as the engine for an RPG, action adventure or whatever else.

Also, the stitching...
