Final Fantasy XIII PC |OT| Lightning must not be forgotten

ummm I should get a better performance than PS3 at any rate right ?

Portable XIII not happening.

You see, PC's aren't always god machines. The PS3 version was coded SPECIFICALLY for the PS3 GPU. Where the devs know the ups and downs of the card and can code the game with that in mind. PC's have the problem of being able to use 1000000000000 different GPUs. Games aren't coded with one card in mind on PC, it's a pretty generic code to run on all cards. The most realistic option you have is upgrading your laptop. Mine runs it at 60fps no problem.

Just checked my play time, 7 hours in one sitting :p

Really liking the game so far. Pretty surprised since everyone keeps saying it was the worst.

Well, I'm a few hours in and I'm kind of disappointed, GAF.

This forum and the rest of the internet convinced me that the game was either an underrated gem falsely slandered by the internet hivemind, or wet sloppy shit out of Satan's asshole. What I've played in the past 3 hours is merely bland and mediocre. I don't have a strong opinion about it at all, good or bad. I'm surprised, given all the virulent back and forth it's generated since launch.

It's still early goings, though, so we'll see what happens.

You have a very vocal minority who liked the game. I didn't find it that great but there were some parts in the game that I absolutely loved. It's a very fun game to just walk slowly and take in the sights and the beautiful music, too.

How far are you so far? Trust me, the battle system gets really good as you go. The game really does get better the further you get in so it's good that you're not completely put off by it.

I have 2 GB vram and 8 gb ram.

My rig is better than a better than a PS3 and this should reflect a much better performance.

I think there's some kind of bug, Durante mentioned it.

The game performs really well from what I’ve seen, both GPU and CPU-wise. But their frame limiting/pacing stuff sometimes seems to bug out.

I'm myself gonna wait for a more stable release of Durante's work.

Hah! Wait 20 hours, it gets better!

No but seriously, i don't see how anyone could possibly think they could have inflated expectations considering how bad the reputation for this game has been.

Maybe the people who actually enjoyed it(who are the minority) made you think it was something it wasn't, but that wasn't the majority opinion as shown by the dwindling sales of each successive installment. It was a failure when it came out and only received glowing reviews because of the hype factor of a next gen FF and an SE that at that point had not yet fallen from grace

It is a 6 out of 10 game at best. You run in a straight line for half an hour, get a cut scene, occasionally fight some enemies or a boss, run in a straight line again, more cutscenes, go to the save menu to dump all your useless animal crap into swords to get meaningless boosts to stats, sometimes switch your paradigms, rinse, repeat, forever.

If you can tolerate all that while having to deal with a terrible story filled with cliche morons for 50 hours, by all means. Atleast it looks pretty for a 2009 game on the 7th gen, and has a decent battle system with good music.

I dont even know why everyone is so hyped for this shit. Someone needs to do a psychological study or something.

Everyone? A collective group is very hyped for this game.
Millions of people played this game so it's no surprise it gets at least some people excited.

I played for an hour and I actually hate the dialogue and story more than I remember I did. It's actually very upsetting to me, like, this used to be my favorite franchise.

The shockingly sharp change in tone from Snow and his buddy witnessing a literal massacre to joking around with his friends immediately afterwards, when they meet back up with the others on the speeder bikes, has my head fucking spinning. This game is a mess, from start to finish.

If you force Vsync off using the Nvidia control panel, the FPS is obviously much better since it's not limited to values divisible by 60. However, it introduces a ton of screen tearing. I'd rather have the jumpy frame rate:/

It was embarrassing seeing those stupid kids being dumb asses on the bridge fighting against the Purge forces, while they were shooting at soldiers. Its absolutely ridiculous and takes you out of the whole game.

For a beginning that is supposed to show a massacre of an entire city full of innocent people, it was quite unfortunate.

Since the game is actually out I guess I can ask now. Does the game have the missing Easy mode that was patched into the Japanese version of the game but never got released outside of japan?

I kind of want to play through the game as it's a road block in my list of completed final fantasy games, but I don't really want to deal with the horrid combat. Thus I would much rather just mash X through all of the combats. Worse case I figure someone might make an easy mode mod someday but it would be nice if they included a previously ignored patch, but given how bare bones the port sounds it's likely it's not there.

I played FF12 immediately after FF13, just to wash away all that disappointment and regret.

Seriously, the dialogue in 12 is magnificent.

It seems when you're in Windowed Mode, the game asks if you want to quit when pressing ESC.

However, the game also runs WORSE in windowed mode without gedosato, than in fullscreen mode WITH gedosato in 2160p

That being said

I have an oc'd i5 3570k and a 750ti and the game can't decide if it likes running at 60fps or 20fps half the time

what a disappointing piece of shit.

Yeah, it's very disappointing. Any emotional connection to the scene is completely broken. How am I supposed to empathize with these characters when they don't even seem to be able to take their own situations seriously?

They go from Hope watching his mother die to laughing and joking around in like... 15 minutes? I can't handle it.

Coolio. I am really glad to hear that, perhaps I can play the game now as while the combat wasn't to hard to get through when I focused on it... caring enough to focus was another story lol.

now just to find 50 gigs of room on my computer.... might just need to buy a new hard drive ><;

Snow suddenly acting like it's a big deal when Hope confronts him later in the game was so weird. It's like the writers decided it's important for him to feel bad or something...

Is it your first time playing this?

If so, I can tell you that you'll miss joking around when Hope starts to talk more.

Ugh.

No. I played from beginning to bitter end at launch. 50 confusing hours. I went to the Gamestop midnight launch.

=(

I feel like I came out of the whole thing a different person, and now replaying this PC port is like kind of therapy to help me understand why I felt the way I did.

First time playing FFXIII

1. Wtf was everyone complaining about the combat system. I'm 7 hours in and it's quite deep. It's just fast paced so you have control of your parties paradeim instead of full control
2. Story is meh so far
3. Really hate Hope. Dafuq just tell Snow....

Hahahaha, at least it's helping you.

Though I have to admit, I didn't get it back then and I still don't get it now. I can understand why "Moms are tough" can be funny, but I really don't get why it's considered to be such a terrible line.

Holy shit that compression

Gawd damn square, the game is a 50GB download, why are the CG cutscenes compressed more than PS3? I pretty much bought this shit for the CG :(

What are the chances that someone could yank the PS3 videos and hack them into this version? Perhaps this is even just a codec/video player issue?

Combat system rocks. It's flashy, simple, and enjoyable from the very beginning, but that's the part that "gets good 20 hours in".

Ugh.

I honestly found Hope more intolerable from
Pulse
onwards than earlier in the game. Moaning about all the shit that just happened I can kind of get, but 180 and the silly pep talks were just annoying to listen to.

The combat's quite fun once you control three party members. Give it a chance on regular difficulty so you're having fun. You're gonna be spending probably 30-40 hours on it, so you may as well try to enjoy it instead of writing the game off as horrid before even fully utilizing the battle system.

But yeah, was watching some streams and it looks like Easy mode is there.

The combat is the one thing I don't get the criticism for.

I personally found it to be one of the worst combat systems I have ever played and I play a ton of jrpgs.

There just really isn't anything I like about it.
It's to much real time to be able to ignore it and do other things during combat like a pure turn based combat, but at least through the first 20 hours such a basic and boring system that it doesn't hold my interest.

The characters don't feel well fleshed out for combat at all, they each feel like a single final fantasy character pointlessly broken up into 3 parts to force a player to have to switch between them in order to try to make things more interesting but instead just makes it really tedious. (and even then they have far less flexibility then most FF characters. 20 hours in on most other FF games and I would have quite a few more moves to choose from)

Add in a shield that you have to break to do real damage to make the combat even for guys that should be a piece of cake take way to long, sprinkle on a if your leader dies (whom you can't choose through the first 20 hours) then you get game over despite the fact that there are items to revive people and finally add in horrible AI that even if they are long range characters like to hump the big enemies so that the tiny AOE attacks the enemy has hits all of the characters when it should only hit one and you have FF13's combat.

The kicker, I actually was enjoying the world/story through the first 20 hours (it wasn't great but it at least held my interest), the only reason I stopped playing was because I couldn't stand dealing with the combat anymore.

nah it's just tedious. I know I was missing the information previously, but yeah I didn't write any part of the game off, I tried my best to give the game a chance for 20 hours but I just couldn't take anymore with the combat system. I know at the very least ff13-2 fixes some of my issues with the system, but I haven't tried that one since I wanted to get through ff13 first.

I think "Moms are tough." is extra stupid, because she repeats it after she shoots the rocket launcher, as if it's supposed to be some kind of massively profound statement.

Or maybe because that kind of line of dialogue can only have any real impact if its coming from a character that you care about, not one that was introduced 20 minutes ago and doesn't actually even have a name (yet).

Man, it's like if Obi-Wan Kenobi died in the first 10 minutes of Star Wars, and then they explain why you're supposed to care about Obi-Wan dying later on in the film. It doesn't fucking work that way.

Final Fantasy XIII is like the worst example of an in media res I think I've ever experienced. It's all backwards.

Not sure why, but this game is really laggy for me. I've seen people on this thread post lower specs than mine and say they run at 60 fps with no drops. Here are my specs, anyone have any ideas?

Intel i3 2.93 ghz
Radeon HD 7770
6 GB RAM
same here with crossfire 7770, what the hell is going on?
the cutscenes shutter like every second.

Went surfing the seven seas and found the cgi movie sizes for ff13; for example z008 is 2.70gb on pc whilst its 3.86gb on the ps3 version.
It's also good to note that they are wmp files on both versions so anyone with the ps3 version should be able to overwrite the pc version movie files.

He's....a kid thrown into a horrific situation. Having a boy act all grownup and mature after all this just doesn't make sense. later spoilers
His change to be a pep talker is really just a front for him to hold back his increasing anxiety. Look how fast it crumbles when his brand starts to change. This is not unusual for teenagers...

Yeah I just got to that part and forgot she says it twice. Yeesus.

I Hope I make it farther than I did on my first attempts back in the day. But man does it look good at 1080/60.
