I am absolutely massive fan of Kaiba, which unfortunately has a fairly off-putting visual style that tends to turn people away. But don't let that stop you! It's remarkably deep, oftentimes simultaneously touching and heartbreaking; a mind-bending love story that's entirely unique in its way.

Perhaps some music may help convince you?

Haibane Renmei

MILLENNIUM ACTRESS
Kino's Journey.
You're not gonna convince anyone just by dropping names, you know... :p

Kino's Journey. I thought it was very underrated when it came out and it's a bit more known now, It's got this surreal quality to it and I remember the various kingdoms and towns Kino visits all being unique. It actually kind of reminds me of Dark Souls, which might sound cliche.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is certainly held in the highest regard by those who have watched it, the problem is not enough people have watched it.

I see NGE mentioned in this thread before LOTGH, injustice I tell ya.

Yeah. Just dropping a name will please those who know the anime, but isn't worth a dime for those who don't. If we want to give those titles more prominence we gotta give something for the people who don't know to work with.

Half of the stuff in your list is already pretty darned popular! I'm thinking more in terms of stuff like Mononoke, as mentioned above.
OK, my apologies... It's pretty difficult to know what's popular or not (after seing Evangelion, Bubblegum Crisis, Nadesico, Videogirl Ai, Jojo, Kenshin, Haibane Renmei here... I wasn't sure where the cursor was). Especially on an international board, I'm not sure of what has been broadcasted/distributed in the world.

Maybe at least Starship Operators, Ouran HSHC, Asura Cryin or Ichigo Marchmallow were obscure enough to qualify?

What about Sola, Sayonara zetsubo sensei, Soukou no Strain?

Tales of Agriculture? ^_^

The problem I have with lesser known anime is that it also often targets a narrower audience...

Isnt that what google is for?
It takes a half minute to look up what its about. Are people so lazy?

Maybe it's because I've seen the ending, but I find this image quite a spoiler... If you haven't played the game or heard about the ending, you don't expect the anime to finish in a bloodbath, and it's quite a big surprise... Seeing the heroins with knives can make people a bit suspicious, no?

Cross Game, my favorite anime of all time. Beautifully adapted from Adachi's manga. Great slice of life, baseball romance. It is such a cozy watch.

Nodame Cantabile is another cozy watch. A good rom-com slice of life with a classical music angle.

Both of these may not be as unknown as I come to believe (Cross Game won some awards in Japan) but I barely see any of these two mentioned despite the love they get from fans.

Don't tell me, I know most of the titles called in this thread.
But I see this is some kind of advertising to help less known series you love to get more recognition. People may look them up, but left only with a title, there is no reason they should. Give them a picture, a paragraph, heck, a few key words can wake the interest of people.

Help others to love what you love.

Gotta throw my hat in for Golden Boy. It, especially the dub, is both simultaneously the single funniest thing you may ever watch and the single most raunchy non-porn show you'll ever watch. Serisouly though, Golden Boy is six episodes for pure funny. I don't know how many times I've watched it but I still fucking laugh like a madman at this show. So good.

Godspeed, Doug Smith, you magnificent bastard.

Aku no Hana is love. Aku no Hana is life.

YES. It kills me that we'll probably never get a second season.

As for my nomination: Le Chevalier D'Eon

Beautifully animated with spectacular fight scenes, has an intriguing mystery and makes for a nice period piece anime. The supernatural elements can be hit-or-miss but overall it's a great show that no one ever seems to talk about.

I disagree. D'Eon is a boring mess that's incredibly dry with a few interesting swordfights here and there. It's more concerned with being a showcase for all these historical figures than being a good show.

The lack of Big O in here making me sad.

I agree. The Big O is my favorite anime. It's worth watching just for the silly banter between Roger and Dorothy alone. But there's also mechs and stuff, too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Hopefully there's a Blu-ray re-release some day, it's crazy expensive right now.

Chihayafuru. It's probably the best sports show out there and, yes, I'm including the wonderful Ping Pong. Chihayafuru is an excellent, excellent show.

School Rumble.

One of all-time greatest slice-of-life school/romance comedies ever.

narubl+22.jpg

References, humour, characters, music, everything

Funimation has almost all of it on their Youtube channel free:
DUB - Episode 1
SUB - Episode 1

NO EXCUSES YO :I
(I actually prefer the English dub, but that's just me)

I discovered it when I was super-bored one day and looking for random shows to watch for free on Youtube and I stumbled on it and as the intro was playing I was seriously contemplating my existence but after a few episodes the show grew on me and I fell in love damnit and partly through it actually made me cry and it was so stupid I was like why the hell is this making me cry but I accepted it
Probably one of my favourite animes. This and Darker than Black need more love.

School Rumble especially needed to have a proper third season. They skipped over a whole school year in the manga.

Fun watch. :) I have the set. I feel like Irresponsible Captain Tyler gets the comedy a little better, as with MSN sometimes the pacing and mood is a little weird, but still great.

Current guilty pleasure: Omishi Magical Theater: Risky Safety. Go ahead and judge me :(

Risky Safety is adorable

I can't believe this was never localized. There's no legit way to watch it?

Story of Saiunkoku is really good too

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure always needs more love

Also RahXephon since most dismissed it as a Eva clone without getting far in it at all. Also Lain is a great anime that is slowly building up more fans.

Jojos Bizarre Adventure seems awesome. I need to check it out along with Bobobobo. And yeah RahXephon is absolutely worth watching.

INFERNO COP!

My god this looks insane. Added to the list. Almost reminds me of Dead Leaves a bit.

Here's one that I watched recently that is in despirate need for more love.

Goldfish Warning!

26657l.jpg

Produced by the same people as the original series of Sailor Moon. It is virtually unknown to most people and it's a great shame that it is the case.

I mean who wouldn't want to watch the story of a girl who buys a junior high-school where there are people, cows, chickens and cats as students? There's even a freeloading lawyer with bunny ears out to steal her pet pink goldfish which can talk and fly.

Lol this seems so zany and adorable. Will watch.

Shigurui - a charming and romantic story of two men vying for the hand of heiress to the fortune and dojo set in feudal Japan. Season 2 pls

Kyousougiga - Beautiful, funny, touching. FLCL like craziness wrapped around the family reunion plot.

Gun X Sword.

Mecha meets Trigun. However the "Wild West" theme gets dropped entirely by the fourth episode, which was great because it was really holding the show back. Amazing music, entirely character driven with a fantastic cast, many mecha fights, one of the most unique villains I've ever seen, really engaging writing, and a very interesting world setting.

Why it was just sort of forgotten to the public is beyond me.

Agreed on this, the greatest anime ever made. It's also free from all the stupid anime bullshit like fanservice.

Aoi Hana aka Sweet Blue Flowers
This needs to be loved. So much feels for this one. A yuri anime that follows two childhood friends, Akira and Fumi, who become reacquainted during their first year of high school. Fumi is a lesbian who, at the start of the show, is recovering from a heartbreak. Adapted from the manga of the same name, it's a great adaptation that stays true to its source. There's great character development in this show, and is fairly realistic in its depiction. The art and music is gentle, well fitted for this show.

Ga-Rei Zero
I like to pretend that the manga it is adapted from doesn't exist, but I liked this prequel. This isn't that well known in Japan either, but episode 1 was fairly notorious as I recall. Of those that watched it, a common comment is that they wouldn't want to watch it again. Not because it is bad, but because it hurts to do so. Directed by Aoki Ei. It has decent action and great music too. Yomi <3

Strike witches
For all the hate it gets as a fan service anime, it has a really fun and likable cast. I sometimes wish they'd drop the stupid no pants thing so that more people would give it a chance, not for the story but for the characters.

Kyoukai senjou no horizon aka Horizon in the middle of nowhere
Again, despite its tendency to have some ridiculous boobs, it has a fun cast and world. Season 3 when?

Nodame Cantabile
I don't know how loved this is outside of Japan, but it should be loved.

Sabagebu
Great comedy. Would you believe it if I told you the manga it was adapted from is serialised in the shoujo magazine, Nakayoshi?

Saki
An enjoyable mahjong show where the characters are all ridiculously skilled, to the point where it's downright magic. Another show that has a huge cast and occasional boob fan service. Despite its huge cast, the show manages to make almost all of its characters, especially the opposing teams, memorable and likable. I would often find myself cheering for all sides in the tournament.

Some oldies:
Dennou Coil
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Kara no Kyoukai
Ichigo Marshmallow
Ouran highschool host club

Dantalian no Shoka
It aired around the same time as GOSICK so it drew the same goth loli/detective comparisons but it does things quite a bit differently. Characters aside, it's settings and arcs are very fantasical (in a great way) and is only let down by a middling final arc imo.

Hanada Shounen-shi
Hf3DeHN.jpg

Fairly old series now but a hilarious and heartwarming one. Kid gets hit by a car and gains the ability to leave his body and become a ghost. Series details him being a kid and growing up while helping other ghosts resolve any worries/regrets before they fully pass on.

Ghost Hunt
While nothing special overall, it's a nice little horror/thriller series with most of the arcs being enjoyable. Most of the arcs touch on some nice scare nerves.

Fuujin Monogatari (Windy Tales)

Heartfelt "Iyashikei" series with an interesting art style similar to Taiyo Matsumoto. Watch this if you like Aria, Tamayura etc. Probably just me but the last episode hit me especially hard, "mono no aware" is powerful stuff.

6isscur.jpg

Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita (Humanity Has Declined)

Looks like a fairytale book come to life but don't let that fool you, lurking underneath is a streak of darkly surreal comedy and satire.

G1EVwdE.jpg

Michiko to Hatchin (Michiko & Hatchin)

Set entirely in Brazil, this action series follows a gangster and her daughter as they travel the country looking for the missing father, chased by the cops & gang members. Obviously influenced by Tarantino and has a few too many car chases, but well worth watching. (Interesting side note: the two female leads are played by "proper" actresses in their only anime roles to date)

It's a very well-written show, but as someone who has ADHD, it's extremely difficult to sit down and watch it. The slow pacing, while extremely necessary, bores me. :-(

YES. It kills me that we'll probably never get a second season.

Aku no Hana doesn't need a second season though. The ending ended on a fantastic note. Anything more would ruin it.

Le Chevalier D'Eon is a weird ass show. To this day, I still don't know if I enjoyed it or not.

Welcome-to-the-NHK-2.jpg

Is a personal favourite. Watched it many years back. Doesn't seen to be that well known.

One of the greatest anime known to man. That inconsistent animation. :-D
