DriveClub dev "had confidence" servers would work - compensation possible

DriveClub's servers currently cannot cope with the number of users attempting to connect their copy online. The problem started before the game even launched on disc in Europe, and has caused the free DriveClub: PlayStation Plus edition to be delayed until further notice.

Evolution has been forced to implement a one in one out policy - so you won't be able to log in unless another player disconnects.

Director Paul "Rushy" Rustchynsky has now defended DriveClub's troubled launch and said that pre-release tests had not shown up any issues.

"We ran a beta test and none of these issues occurred," Rustchynsky wrote on Twitter. "We had confidence everything was ready. These issues were unexpected.

"We did run large scale synthetic load tests with tens of thousands of concurrent users and the tests were successful."

Some DriveClub owners have questioned why the game was released at all - especially after its previous year delay - if its servers weren't ready.

Others have asked for compensation - something Evolution has said it is not against as a possibility.

"We're considering all of our options right now," Rustchynsky wrote in response to one fan who had been unable to connect.

The last server update, pushed live on Friday evening, increased the total number of players able to connect. But Evolution explained that further tests over the coming days would impact server availability for all.

Even if you can connect to the game's servers, various features remain offline. Challenges and social updates are unavailable, although clubs, leaderboards and online racing are enabled.

"We're still working flat-out to fix the online problems," Rustchynsky concluded last night. "Sorry for the wait."

I hope we get November DLCs for free as compensation.

Their synthetic load tests accounted for tens of thousands of users? Like, I don't mean to criticize, but that isn't much and it was a given the game would have many more players than just tens of thousands.

E: Ah, I misunderstood the OP. Carry on, then.

Crikey. I don't see Evo surviving this. Get those CV's polished up, chaps and chapettes.

Pretty terrible article. Was hoping for some actual new information, not just a tweet dump.

Where did he defend the launch?

Where did Evolution say that? Do they take Rushy tweeting as him speaking for the company as a whole?

It says here that they did large scale server tests. Doesn't really make sense that no problems showed up at all.
Simply case of a test case that didn't cover (correctly/entirely) what it needed to cover. Happens way too often with software :(

My hate is growing towards Paul and Evo. Its just not acceptable that playes who bought the game and payed 59 dollars/euros for it cant play the game.

The way they are handeling this is just idiotic and there is no excuse for it. Im now at the point where they can shove the game where the sun doesnt shine!

I find it mind boggling. A week later and these issues still persist. Not gonna open my copy until they fix this broken mess.

What about the people that already bought the season pass?

People who bought season pass will understand the problem and support the developer as they already like this game so much. This compensation is for the new comers who took the chance on game but they left with no online, but not for those who love the game as they will not care about compensation other than expecting the servers up and running asp.

Slightly off topic but every time a big game releases, we have these kind of problems and yet some people actually think we may see next gen consoles that are digital download only and without disk drives or even streaming machines only.
No chance lol.

Why can't you play the game? You can still play all singleplayer races.

They really should compensate the people that paid 60 dollars for it and are unable to play the game.

It sucks for the devs that problems like this happen but it shouldn't be accepted that a product is sold like this without some form of compensation for the consumers.

It'll be fine. Game seems to selling well regardless. They'll live to make up for it with DC2.

People not wanting a Drive Club 2 due to all of this negativity is the reason why its time for concern. Drive Club 1 selling well right now means a lot of disappointed customers since things aren't fixed.

By a Drive Club 2 point, Polyphony should have pushed out a new GT, and it becomes an even stranger proposition to be funding competitors in your own stables.

Evo had a small window to make DC a positive new brand that differentiated itself hugely and justified being a parallel series worthy of continuing. A year delay and a flubbed launch aren't speaking to that hope.

Its just a video game, man. I know its annoying, but I'm sure they'll get it sorted and you'll be able to enjoy your game soon enough. No reason to *hate* anybody.

Hate is maybe the wrong word, respect is maybe the right word. I have completly zero respect for the company and Paul! This is BF4 all over again!

nothing for your biggest fans? sounds like a bad policy

Yep.

Their test cases didn't model the use case closely enough to expose the bug they are trying to deal with now. Incredibly common issue.

I guarantee you everyone at Evo feels like shit about what's going on right now. They worked hard on it and now everyone is mad at them for an unexpected issue. The best they can do is apologize, fix it, and not try to cover it up with bad excuses.

I did and I don't really care. I'm not asking anything else that what was advertised. Let's let them work and fix stuff and everything will be fine. If they are fixing the network code, that could take some time to get a working and thoroughly tested fix. I'm ready to wait if they are ready to share regular updates and are open about the situation (they really seem to be upfront until now).

If we've all waited a year for it, is a further fortnight's delay really that big a deal?

I'm not sure either way, but it's not like the game is unplayable in its current SP guise. Just think about how good it'll be when it all comes together.

And I bet Evo are the ones hurting the most over this. No-one tries to fail (not even the England football team).

Man, this game just keeps being disappointing. I'm still holding out for the PS+ edition to see if I want to buy it, but ugh. It's 2014, the game was delayed a year, these kinds of issues shouldn't happen. I can't believe they weren't prepared for launch.

Can someone point me to where he states compensation is a possibility?

or have they just speculated from this line "We're considering all of our options right now,"

I'm disappointed in the delay of the PS+ version but I feel bad for Evo more than anything else. I'm not a huge racing game fan but my son and I were looking forward to playing this since there's not a whole lot else to play right now. This, Alien and Shadow of Mordor were the kick-off to the Fall glut of games and now Driveclub may get left behind because of their server issues. With other games I'm more interested in coming soon - Evil Within and Dragon Age, I'm less interested in Driveclub. I'll still grab it if ever hits PS+ but the odds of me spending much time with it or upgrading is pretty slim.

Not much compensation for the most diehard DriveClub players, who will already have bought the season pass.

Wouldn't be a good idea, some people have already paid for that content.

Like I said, adding another DLC for the month of July 2015 will compensate for the November DLC if it were to be given for free to all since Season Pass only covers from November to June 2015.

"tests were successful" is different to no problems at all. Success could mean finding issues and resolving them. Obviously they have new issues now.

On the other hand you have the Destiny launch, which went absolutely seamlessly.

The only important factor is whether the company was actually ready. Bungie was.

Depends on how they wrote their tests.

But it is telling that whatever the problem conditions - they haven't been able to isolate and fix the issue yet. It must be something hairy, if they've even managed to nail it down yet.

The only important factor is whether the company was actually ready. Bungie was.
And Bungie deserves heaps of credit for it, along with whoever made the calls on the alpha and beta. Even with all of that preparation, the track record for big games at launch is abysmal. Destiny bucked that trend.

I don't get the anger some people have. Like do you really think Evo is just chilling and didn't care if their game was going to crash and burn and maybe bring them with it? Especially with how people looked at Dice and BF4?

Or do you maybe think they basically just got stuck with a break and are trying to fix it and repair the damage? Obviously they tested it out, did a Beta on PSN and such, and it worked. They wanted a working game and did the tests they knew to do and it passed. Real world played out differently. That happens with software and tests. A little team relative to a massive world audience means a lot of issues only get caught by the mass real world audience. This is one that came from the real world audience and is Evo's worst nightmare.

Get off their backs. They obviously would rather be known for a flawless release and an instant fix the next day at worst. If it's taking time, it's because the issue takes time so resolve.

They just made a article out of his twitter posts :/

That's modern game journalism for you. :p

Anyway this whole situation has been a clusterfuck. Evolution seems to take the responsibility but i don't think Sony is completely free from blame. They should have given them more servers just to be on the safe side.

Unless you got some online only version of the game no one else did, you can play the game just fine. The online is broken but the single player should keep most people busy for quite some time.

And the way they are handling this is that they are trying to fix it as fast as they possibly can. There's nothing else they can do. This was an unforeseen problem and it'll hopefully be solved within the next week or so. Kind of childish to hold such a grudge for not being able to play a game online. You can still play the game offline so it's not like it's a complete waste of money until they fix the server issues like completely online games like MMOs are.

Have some patience, jeesh.

The main lesson obviously is they need to take a close look at their pre-release testing, because whatever that entailed it was completely useless. The fact that these issues were not seemingly anticipated raises serious questions about the capability of their networking group.

What I find hilarious are the "Evo won't survive this!" posts. It's been six days. Not six weeks, not six months. Six days. The PS+ trial version isn't out and the servers are super spotty. It's not like nobody can play the game.

Things will get fixed, they might kick us a few free cars, and most people will go home satisfied.

lol chill with the 'hate' talk guys. It's just a game, and Evo wanted everything to go smoothly. DC is still a fun game without the online. It'll be up before you know it.
