My Kickstarter Nightmare: Soul Saga Edition

...I don't get this project. He's coming off allegations that he has no farkin' clue what he's doing, and he responds by saying "I've done all this cool stuff, but I'm showing you none of it". I can get not wanting to show every dungeon. I can get not starting the Beta until the game's actually in Beta. But why not show the first/early dungeon?

Showing what you've done generates more good will and hype than telling.

At first I had this update filled to the brim with screenshots, and even a short video of Mithos running through one of the dungeons and interacting with some of the basic puzzles. We’re all pretty darn proud of how far we’ve gotten the project. Even though things are going very well, I’m being advised by several of my close associates in the game industry that it may be best to take a note from the way many other Kickstarter games of the same RPG genre are operating, and to release news less frequently.

This sounds dodgy as hell. How does it make sense to not release a single screenshot or gameplay video of what you have so far and nip these concerns in the bud? Wanting gamers to be surprised is all well and good, but you can still surprise them after releasing some screenshots of the first dungeon or one of the towns or whatever. I'm guessing nothing of this game will be seen until this supposed beta.

One would think, even if he wanted to cut down the amount of content he releases, to cut it down to an actual screenshot or short video rather than another piece of artwork.

I'd ask who these 'close associates' are, but;
A.) I doubt he'd ever respond.
B.) 'Associate' implies some level of equality, meaning they'd just be contract testers too.
C.) They probably don't exist.

My thoughts exactly. This tool is such a joke."Hey, I have tons of screenshots and even a video, but I'm not going to show you!"

You would think after the negative publicity from this thread and twitter he would have enough sense to show ANYTHING remotely positive...

To be honest, the negative publicity has probably made him even more afraid to actually show off footage and screenshots from the game, but it's not going to look good on his part whenever he just releases the game and nobody has no idea what is in store for them

I mean, at this point it's a catch-22 for him, but he's got to man up at some point and actually show off what he's been doing all these months...

This game will never be released and for everyone who backed it, you'll never get your money back.

That's the grim reality of the situation and exactly why I refuse to back kickstarters from people who clearly have no clue as to the gravity of the undertaking that comes with making a video game. Call it an investment, call it funding an idea etc... I call it throwing your money away recklessly.

I've backed 3 kickstarters and all of them have either been cancelled or taken MONTHS longer to finish than they said it would take.

I guess it's always a risk to invest in something if they aren't called Double Fine.

Double Fine is a prime example of what you said given it took them over a year longer to finish than they said it would originally

October 2012 != January 2014 :p

Games around the DF Kickstarter-fuelled boom - including Broken Age itself - generally got a bit overfunded, and a reasonable portion of the extended development could be put down simply to trying to make a project that meets the eventual budget, rather than the original plan of requesting a budget for a fixed project.

I don't really begrudge people doing that. I pledge because I want games to happen, not because I need them to fit into a predefined play schedule! More to the point, I pledge with having faith that the developers can handle an increased scope. Some can't, and that's bad; some take longer as a result, and I'm okay with that.

Reading the posts on the game forum, it amazes me just how...blind...some of those people are. I mean, I understand praising someone, but it's like these people are getting paid to praise him or something. *shakes head*.

Well this story at least seems entertaining in some sense. I do hope a decent game comes out of it, but it's clear to me this guy has no idea how to manage development of an actual game

You're starting to worry me. Why are you still so invested into this? Didn't you got your refund? It feels like you're taking this too seriously.

If I remember correctly, the project guy wasn't going to give him a refund until after the project was complete. He pressed him on it, and all he was able to get was unbanned from the forums. He still has his $15 or whatever in the project.

The backer behavior on the forums is pretty scary, though not unheard of. Around the time of the Ouya KS, there were articles talking about how backers can get swept up into kickstarters...how they start to feel like part of the project themselves. When these thing's make history, they feel like they're a part of that history....the project's success is their success.

No, I have not gotten a refund. I requested the PS Vita version/code, but was told that due to something with the Humble Bundle list (which shouldn't affect me), I won't be refunded until after the game releases...

As stated previously, it may only be $15, but at this point, it's all about principle.

UI is obviously placeholder, but otherwise looks good. Though there's obviously a question of how long it took to create this small bit and how long it's going to take to create a whole game with these kinds of visuals.

Sorry to necro-bump this thread but here's some gameplay:

I kinda wish Elie had kept her mechanic design.
Looks good, sounds good. I like that there are four player characters in combat instead of the now standard and watered down three in RPGs. If this is episodic then I can see it getting finished. I would expect 5 to 10 hours of gameplay, which is fair to ask of an indie, imo. But I really have no idea of anything from this project.

Digging the visual and sound design. I like the Mario RPG style level up system as well.

I also have to say the character redesigns are much better.

Yeah, it's actually looking pretty good indeed. I am impressed with their progress, TBH. However, I still see no way this is getting released this year.

Game looks pretty good for an early alpha, but there's no way he hits all of his promised goals. To match that quality for 10 hours with all the gameplay he has in mind is insane for a 200k budget. And to put it on Vita/PS4/Wii U? Things have to get cut.

Seems decent enough.

I can't get over the fact that this was the thread that was bumped with alpha footage and not the original Kickstarter thread, ha ha.

It looks pretty decent (though I did think that some of the new character designs are meh), but there is no way he delivers this project this year. Anyways though, good for him that he finally released some more gameplay footage

Wow, wasn't expecting the first gameplay footage to look that solid.

PROS:
-I like the art, though the character designs are still "meh".
-Fast battle animations AND combat = win.
-Seems to be running pretty smooth right now.

CONS:
-I like the art, but in just that short 10 minute video alone, it felt very recycled. Hoping it's varied and each island has a bit of individuality.
-No way he will get this released on the PS4/PSV/Wii U this year, not at that left of detail.
-Sacrifices? Surely things are going to need to be cut in order to have enough budget left to get the game onto the other promised platforms...?

Color me slightly impressed. I'm not going to hold my breathe until the game is in my hands (PS4). Mike made a VERY sour impression upon me with his actions earlier this year...

Anyone knows where is the registration code needed to register on the forum?
or $15 backer don't get one? I've checked my whole kickstarter e-mail and didn't find it ._.

Sorry to necro. But any updates on this recently? I ask since last update on kickstarter was like April if I recall correctly. Any new videos or info? Is he gonna need more money?

I mean I had my doubts about this first part releasing late 2014 but now doubt are confirmation.

I just checked and the last update was posted in April, so I'm guessing there hasn't been any other updates

I think most updates are being confined to the forum.

He's been posting in the April update thread everyo so often and could do a stream next week-ish. November-December seems to be the date they are aiming for PC/Mac/Linux.

An update might be coming along with the stream if it's going to be announce like the others.

New update... https://www.kickstarter.com/project...30e8e93ba3c2c32bc85&ref=backer_project_update

I missed you! How have you been? Soul Saga is moving along great. My personal health took a dip a few months ago when I became bed ridden from a ruptured disc in my spine. I have barely been able to walk, and unable to sit for about 3 months now. The doctor says I will probably need surgery. >.<

But don't worry, I won't do something like that until Soul Saga is done. I want to make sure I get a good game to you as soon as possible. I've acquired a laptop so I can work from bed since I can't sit at my normal workstation. I'm still personally clocking in ~100 hours a week on Soul Saga, so there shouldn't be any delays from my end of the project. Today is going to be a quick update clarifying an important element of the game.

This. Backers are not investors.

I thought we had moved on from this subject? I'm pretty sure after pages of bickering and such, we all ultimately agreed to disagree?

Either way, I still want to see more gameplay, but for now, it appears he's producing content. Though the back issue just sounds way too convenient/excuse-y considering the original release date was for this month...

But that's the skeptic in me who still feels lightly burned by how he handled the initial situation, don't mind me :)

Gotta admit, kinda curious where this project is right now. Hopefully a backer can share some impressions with the rest of us.

I backed but didn't back at the beta level. The project is getting more ambitious with the dev adding content that was tied to an unmet stretch goal. He also said a lot of backers fell through, including the $10,000 backer. The project looks like it's going well but it's so far off. I'm OK with that but I understand why others might be more upset.
