Digital Foundry vs GTAV on XONE - performance analysis

Interesting to see the slight differences in ground texture next to the road, particularly where the pile of gravel is (Black shirt is XB1):

Shadow in far distance is quite difference too.
Maybe different weather or daylight time, but seem look like at same time.

The fill rate of the xb1 ain't so great compared to the ps4, so that's probably why they had to cut back on the grass (lots of alpha textures really stresses a GPUs fill rate). It was either that or drop resolution. I wonder if the PC version will allow for denser foliage than the PS4 version.

Do you leave footprints in the dirt? I wonder if thats what that is...

Now that you mention that those two different spots look like they could be foot sized. It would make sense, as I don't see why there would be such a small difference between two versions when everything else is the same.

One of the first things I noticed while playing the ps4 version was the considerable amount of grass. That was really rare last gen, so it was very noticeable here. It looks great.

They're not an EXACT match, the XB1 is a bit further up the road, and the angle is a bit different.

Ok? That's quite clear from looking at the pictures. What does that have to do with me answering why the dirt is on the gravel / asphalt?

My honest opinion is that the PS4 version has too much grass. On the One I can play it because I'm reminded that it's a videogame. On the PS4 version the grass makes it look too realistic, I might forget that I'm playing a videogame and then it wont be fun any more. When you combine the fact that the PS4 has too much realism with the better controller of the One and the fact that all of my friends play on One, the choice to me is clear.

Is there such a thing as too much grass?

I've played a good chunk of the beginnig (prologue and Lamar missions) yesterday (PS4).

Being on PS3 I noticed a step up in framerate between GTA IV and GTA V (confirmed by FD, what was it, up to 5 frames/sec more on avg?) , and I can see it now (PS3 GTA V -> PS4 GTAV) . Main difference in a car - PS3 version struggled to keep up at high speeds, probably streaming issues, not the case here at least for now (but the first mission with Lamar give You the chance to ride quite a fast car so I am not expecting it to be the case at all.

I have noticed some very delicate pop-in (again in a car) but rememering the PS3 ver it's barely there and some may not spot it at all.

Being sensitive to framerates and judder (I noticed one during Destiny's beta) I am very very pleased with the performance. This is a version I always wanted to play (sorry last gen).

My impressions of both PS4 and XB1 versions after playing both side by side for the last day:

*They both look very simular – but there is a visual advantage to PS4. PS4 seems to have slightly better lighting, more pronounced foliage, and (in my eyes) clothing detail. It doesn't seem to 'shimmer' as much as the XB1 either (slightly better aliasing on PS4 perhaps?)

*Frame rate appears to be very close. The PS4 again has a *slight* advantage, as I have noticed the 'juddering' that DF talks about with the XB1. It's most noticeable when rotating around your character, or anywhere that the camera rotates fairly quick. HOWEVER;

*The XB1 seems to handle busy scenes (lots of traffic, explosions) better than PS4. There is noticeable judder/dropped frames on PS4 in these scenarios, XB1 is almost always 'smoother' in this regard.

*The PS4'S initial loading screen (with the sirens and Rockstar logos) is noticeably chopper than XB1, not sure why that is. XB1 is slightly quicker to load SP (both consoles have the standard HDD).

*The XB1's controller feels a bit more responsive that the DS4, although adjusting the sensitivity in game for the DS4 largely eliminates the advantage to XB1.

*Online with PS4 has been great (although lobbies are still pretty small), XB1 constantly puts me into lobbies by myself - but I'm aware that there has been issues with online.

Thats about It So Far! !

Thank you for this. Very informative.

Perhaps the game is CPU bound so all the extra PS4 GPU grunt went to lighting, AA, textures and foliage.

I'm playing the PS4 version, and there are som obvious framerate drops while driving through the city.
Bummer, was hoping for a locked framerate. Other than that it's an amazing upgrade from last gen versions

All these grass gifs are highlarious.
I saw the update over on the Digital Foundry GTAV analysis, which included that image going around of an area mostly barren of grass on the XB1. I came over here to see if the issue was already being dissected like some kind of murder mystery.

WAS. NOT. DISAPPOINTED.

Yeah that's why ACU looks so much better on PS4... oh wait. Yeah, I don't believe it.
I like how this one game has people believing that Xbox One somehow has an edge over PS4 now.

I mean, hey, even PS3 had a number of multiplatform games that were superior to Xbox 360 versions - but those cases were quite rare overall just as we're seeing this time around with XO.

Unity isn't a great way to judge anything either as it's a very buggy game on all platforms.

We just spent a couple hours doing a recording for our channel and seeing them side by side. This is exactly what we saw except the framedrops in the city were instantly noticable on the PS4 version. I mean instantly. While the grass was instantly noticeable in some areas when we looked for them on the Xbox one. Lighting on the PS4 is...different at times I like its softer look but at night it looks odd at times.

I love the extra grass but even think the Xbox One handles it well as both games really have a ton compared to last gen.

LOL one out of 10 games game being able to run better on Xb1, just means the game is poorly optimized on ps4. unless you believe these machines run on magical fairy dust, you should know the ps4 is significantly more powerful hardware then the XB1, this is a fact.

I still don't know where the original "Grassgate" shots were taken, are people saying that this area is particularly void of foliage?.

PS4 version is lovely. Framerate definitely drops when zooming through the city at high speed, but other than that it seems very solid. The grass is also very nice. Probably my Favourite GTA grass in any GTA game featuring grass ever. Much dense!

Joking aside, it is still a spectacular looking game. My head will spin around and pop off when the PC version hits and you're all showing off your 1440p screenshots.

do WHAT?

I really dont notice any frame drops or pop in. But i only played about 6 hours so far.

SSD in my PS4 BTW.

I do wonder if an SSD might improve/resolve the frame-rate complaints about speeding through the city. My only question left really...
There is a logical reason why it might.

The camera is not at the same position/angle to the ground, I think it is quite normal given consoles do not generally go crazy with anisotropic filtering.

A good SSD will always be better over a regular HDD, anything that needs to stream of data from one or more source will benefit IMHO :).

Is it just me or do the PS4 screens look like somewhat blurred compared to the XB1 screens? Looks like they lost some sharpness and also some saturation.

I noticed this on PS3/360 comparisons too. On pretty much every game. As if the final render gets a slightly, but still noticable blur...

Doubt this will help as I think the problem in those dense areas will be the number of physics/AI updates and draw calls the CPU has to handle.

It was a joke.. because we are talking foliage.. one of the least give a fuckable things about GTA... it's just funny because we have pages upon pages talking about the foliage.. and very little discussion about any other differences.

That's funny. That's why someone posted a Grass Theft Auto 5 gif.. because it's funny.

I'm all for these technical threads, but seriously sometimes you gotta step back and think about how some of this stuff is pretty absurd.

I wish we had more in-town comparisons.

Yeah, it is funny, because DF didn't have the PS4 version to compare with. We're waiting and chatting. :)

so...... last year, a great and very vocal part of GAF was 1000% certain that as time passed,
the gap that was present at day 1 games (cod: ghosts / bf4) would only WIDEN as time passed.

cue today, you really need to search to find something to say.
you really need to pull it from its hair to make a thing about it.

conclusion: next gen, tame your expectations better.

There are some especially empty areas, but PS4 seems to have the edge everywhere as shown by the random pics taken on the last page.

The PS4 having some more foliage isn't in question, I'd expect it too considering the res/fps parity, there would have had to have been some overheads cut somewhere, but.....

I am struggling to find anywhere that looks remotely as barren as those original grassgate shots, I am intrigued where they were taken, and by whom.

To me the ps4 version looks more natural. It looks like the fog distance might be increased on the xbox version so it starts further away as the ps4 version looks more graduated. It's hard to tell though.
